I watched the full interview yesterday. His hands are tied and he is fighting a 3rd force inside Eskom. While it is under government it will always be a money pit with the corruption and sabotage. If this man had complete control he would give SA electricity to be proud of. Time for government to get out of businesses and let the professionals run it. Andre du Ruyter deserves a medal and all our support.

All this is known to everyone! It’s the anc that’s responsible for the situation Eskom is in. Cyrille knows all these issues too. Let private industry generate power as quickly as possible. We need growth!!!
SA government is the sole shareholder in Eskom. SA government dictates De Ruyters' every move. His appointment was a hospital pass of note. Ultimately you will have to get off the grid!
If i remember correctly, De Ruiter slashed some executive staff in the first few years of his reign. The problem came when he wanted to move the knife further down the Eskom organogram. The unions cried blue murder and he had to stop, meaning that he cant touch ineffective staff because they are covered by the unions and government.
1994 - 17 000 employed at Eskom, 55 Gigawatt generated, 2nd cheapest electricity worldwide (kwh/$) Fast forward to the present, 47 000 employees, Eskom having terrible trouble to generate 30 Gigawatt and in top 5 for most expensive electricity (kwh/$). Not rocket science to figure out what went / is wrong.
Goodness you guys are so polite. I suppose you have to be so you don’t burst out laughing at the incongruity of the situation. I hope the general public is finally becoming aware that the decisions made by government are no longer de facto “democratic” .. our so called democracy died and went to heaven a decade ago, and has not yet to my knowledge risen from the dead. De Ruyter is a brave man. We can be grateful if he stays at Eskom.
Help or more money remember it's never been about the money it's about service to the South African people the worst problem in South Africa is division
Eskom has been 'transformed' beyond repair. It has lots of generating units at older power stations that are idle because it deems them uneconomical to maintain and operate, but Kelvin power station in JHB is much older than any of Eskom's power stations yet it still produces power cheaply and reliably because it has and still is being maintained and run by competent staff. Eskom is in such disarray that it would rather let generation assets lie idle than maintain them and generate power. It had all the time in the world to maintain generation units at Komati, Grootvlei, Hendrina and Camden power stations, but it is simply too inept to do so. It would rather subject the country to constant loadshedding than executing its basic business. Eskom must sell its old power stations and use the money to reduce debt or do maintenance. Even if it gets 10 billion rand in total for its old power stations it is better than leaving them idle and costing the economy billions in lost productivity. Private consortia would definitely be able to run those old stations profitably and reliably, while saving the economy billions in lost productivity. Eskom's management lacks vision, and its workforce is corrupt and incompetent. The best would be to sell all individual power stations to the private sector - Eskom in its current form is terminal and committing slow suicide, together with the rest of SA's economy!!!
You have my support and prayers André. Your expertise is savings SA from a complete shut down. Like the whole of SA, ANC messed up Escom to the state it is.

Can see all the mountaineering equipment is making it impossible to climb the mountain. Your hands are tied. SA government should not be involved in any business because they mess up everything. Only downhill from here and that's the most hopeful outcome.
Why do we have to supply other countries in Africa 24/7 when we have loadshedding?? This does not make any sense...or is this another back hand shake??
It’s been like watching a massive cruiser ship that has been sinking but moving slowly somewhere but they don’t know where. So they change the CEO - then they send in the life rafts but restrict their size. The leaks on the boat were seen 25 years ago. But the ANC and the cadres put more holes in the boat than anybody could fix. Their rescue plan isn’t much better. As De Ruiter himself admitted it’s like being a jockey on a dying horse. Have a look at Lebanon to see where this show is going.
I can't for the life of me understand why grid connected solar installations on residential proporties can't be allowed to feed into the grid at a nominal credit amount? Currently we're being charged for consumption when we feed into the grid, so we simply don't. This can immediately relieve a massive pressure on the grid during daylight hours across a varied geographical area.
André's concern about state procurement policies complement the findings of the thesis of one of my students who researched their effects. His case study was also an engineering-based SOE which had to compete internationally. Due to supply/value chain constraints after being acquired by the state, the company's process were seriously slowed down and compromised. I don't think that SOE will survive the loss of market and skills.
Make it simpler to get home solar PV systems feeding into the grid. Money is a very strong incentive for rapid rollout, just look at US, EU, AUS.. their policies on home solar helped to get a huge amount of energy production financed and deployed in a decentralised manner. Sure you can make the argument that it doesnt work that well when its cloudy or rains, but energy is energy. Large scale storage is the next issue then.. this can be additional hydro plants, or retrofitting old coal plants with the molten aluminium heat batteries or any number of alternatives. Ensuring that systems are compatible when installed, vehicles when plugged in can feed power back to a home/building and so on. The requirement for locally produced solar panels is stupid. Simply purchase from the cheapest source globally.
For time being I would agree with imports, but eventually the struggle with locally procuced products will have to start, thar's how you build your economy, as soon as your imports become high you are making less money as a country, even though it is easier. But the point, it is valid. We need a fix NOW.
De Ruyter needs to do the right thing and resign....He is obviously out of workable, practical ideas...And he has not fixed anything in three years in charge... If he was honest, he would admit that the battle is already lost...There is no hope for Eskom or for South Africa....
He is the most competent currently, nobody else wants this job.He has fired many unnecessary staff including the chief procurement officer and has helped reduce costs by intervening in procurement processes resulting in many companies paying back millions of Rand's for overcharging Eskom which was due to corruption.I can say more.
