i think it is in fact the case of people not listening to the artist because if i'm being completely honest, i haven't listen to a lot of these people catalog but you can just not rank some people. you gotta put them somewhere so if they haven't heard they're good or listened to their music they put them in a low ranking

What I think happened was that when they were averaging their positions on the tier list, they counted the “Don’t listen to” tier as lower than the trash tier.

The way this list was composed makes my head spin. So many of the rappers listed as “trash” and “inconsistent” have had admirable careers lasting decades or have pushed the genre in unique ways, and to have forgettable figures such as G-Eazy and YNW Melly sitting higher than RTJ, Noname, Injury Reserves and DOOM is just a shame bro.
On the other hand, I want to know so badly how this list was composed, and by who. I think the demographic of people interested in tierlist-making had a big impact on how the list played out.
I think the main reason this list is so bad is because the idiots who put this together accidentally including not knowing who the artist is as part of the average and since it was at the bottom. Those who people haven't heard of were just brought straight to the bottom of the list even though they're GOATs.
Most people making tierlists have a "don't know" option in the bottom. And I guess the Tierlist website put them in their own made-up bottom tier
I bet there were a lot of fairly casual rap fans (myself included) who haven’t heard much from half of these artists so they put lots of people in “don’t know”.
That’s said I would have made a better list than this haha

Im pretty sure the reason why rappers like doom and peggy are so low is because theres a do not know tier as the bottom tier on the list. I think a lot of people put them there and it led to them being averaged very low.

i think what happened is that the community list system got fucked up by the "haven't listened to enough" tier. since it takes the average ranking, and the "haven't listened to enough" tier is the lowest tier, it would bring people like jpegmafia and mc ride down by a lot.

Im pretty sure the reason so many great but niche rappers end up so low is because many people had them in the "unsure/no opinion" row. Which just happens to be at the very bottom, pulling their average note down like crazy. They really didn't think this through while making the study

agreed. people only care to look at his first 3 albums and say hes the goat, but in reality he has a terrible discography. I dont think he can even save it at this point anymore hes gotten cornier with every new release.

It looks like most of the people who submitted a tier list simply weren’t aware of all the talents that exist across the landscape of hip hop, so they threw them in low tiers out of sheer ignorance. There is a trend of mainstream notoriety increasing as the tiers increase, whether they are one hit wonders or rappers currently at the top of the game.
I think most tier lists for artists usually come down to the person's individual taste as a whole and what they like and don't like. Even if someone is incredible at what they do there will be someone out there that doesn't like them and will put them in a bad or just okay category despite the fact that overall they are better than that. Also legendary status has a lot to do with whether or not someone will be higher or lower in a particular tier list.
Edit: Also to clarify, some people just put the artists in each tier in order as they are on the bottom of the page. Other people actually rank people in each tier. That's probably why you think some of the tier rankings are wack.
Edit #2: Also to clarify again, I think most people at the bottom of the tier list are there because the casual fans of rap and hip hop didn't know who they are and made a I don't know them category and because the tier list creator had different tiers in mind the list got f ed up.
Nah drake isn’t a goat rapper 😂 he is definitely one of the most successful rappers/artist of all time but lyrically he can’t match Kendrick, Eminem, Wayne and nas or Jay-Z

There’s so much to account for regarding a tier list for rappers that it becomes nearly impossible to rank them.
How do we factor different genres of rap vs. one another?
How do we compare short career runs like Biggie and 2PAC vs full and ongoing careers such as a Drake or Kanye?
How do we define Lyricism? Technical ability? Influence? Which weighs more over the other?
There’s no such thing as a wrong opinion unless it’s whatever this god forsaken tier list is.
None of those questions have ever been able to be answered, in any genre, but here would be mine:
I would define lyricism as the meaning and depth of the lyrics first and things like Rhyme schemes as secondary but still fairly important.
Comparing short vs long careers could only be done by vs. The peaks of each artist which is still an ignorant way to go about it
Influence has zero bearing on the quality of the artist, but it does lay a significant role in other discussions.
Factoring different genres of rap would be comparing how good they are at their sub genre, and what they accomplish within it.
I think what happens with these tier lists is people will guess where an artist they don’t know about should go on the tier list instead of putting them in the idk category so that they look like they know they’re talking about when they post their tier lists on Twitter which leaves us with placements like El-P and Mc Ride in trash and almost always lacking

Future is one of the most hard working artists. He is the reason why Playboi Carti and all other trap and hyper pop artists are not getting any hate. He is the pioneer of trap music and he took all the hate and piss but never stopped a single month and is still going so strong. Future must be in GOAT category there are literally so many classics and such amazing songs he has given.

@@-venomblustudios-7069 I can name at least 200 great songs by him. He created a whole sub-genre and carried the whole decade. He is literally on so many features dropping albums after albums. I don't think anyone else has been making so much music now. The amount of hate he went through and all the hard work he do, If that doesn't makes him one of the GOATs idk what will. Even You can play his songs from 2011 they are still so catchy and good. I can play literally any song from his discography and it's never bad. Also recently he has been on everyone's spotify wrapped people listen love but can never acknowledge the greatness.
Whenever rappers are ranked in tier lists and top 50’s, 20’s, 10’s or whatever, Busta Rhymes and Tech N9ne NEVER get mentioned and it always does my head in so much. So underrated and disrespected. In terms of rapping quality and technical quality, they’re almost GOATed

Since this is an average, any rappers who aren’t as well known get put in “never heard” it averages out with the people who put them super high and they end up in “trash” or “lacks in skill but not always trash” so then it ends up being a garbage tierlist
I think the biggest problem with Tier lists Is that sometimes there are rappers that have completely different lanes.Can you explain to me how can you put a street rapper like Tee Grizzley higher than a rapper that focuses more on lyrical side of things like Nas.Especially when they make completely different type of rap music.
