Sat Nam is the bija mantra - the seed mantra. It germinates inside of you and starts to grow. More you chant more it florishes. According to Yogi Bhajan, Sat Nam is small and potent. and helps in activating chakras.
Ong Namo Guru Dev Namo : According to 3HO, this mantra is used for “tuning in” to the divine flow and self-knowledge within each of us. This mantra helps us to tap our own creative energy and knowledge, bringing us from darkness to light.

This mantra asks you to believe in your own internal wisdom; to trust and listen to your inner guidance. ... Another rendition of the translation says “I bow to the Divine Wisdom within myself.” The mantra also recognizes that everything is one and also means “I bow to the All-That-Is.”..So much love and so it is, namaste!

Ong Namo Guru Dev Namo (or the Adi Mantra) are the words we chant more than any other at each Sat Nam Fest. More than just a way to start our practice, the Adi Mantra connects us to the universal insights of the community of Kundalini teachers and students - otherwise known as the golden chain.
Haridev Ong Namo spotlight when explaining the purpose of chanting the Adi Mantra to new students, I say it is like plugging in to the amazing electrical grid of Kundalini yogis - taking that power from across infinite time and space, and applying it to your practice at this moment and place in time. Pretty auspicious, eh?
But when Kundalini is still new to you (and even if it is not), fitting another complicated mantra within your limited time for personal practice may not really be a priority. But I hope this information helps you to reconsider that notion and chant three rounds of Ong Namo Guru Dev Namo before you practice. You will not regret it…
