Looking back now, Nastia really hit her peak time in 2008. I've watched a series of these videos of her performances at various domestic and international competitions in 2008. That Olympic gold wasn't all that surprising.
meangirlbecca yes. I know Shawn Johnson was receiving a lot of attention and hype around that time because she won Nationals and Worlds but if we wanna get technical and detailed, Nastia was truly the greatest gymnast in the whole world at that time and she proved that in Beijing. Yeah National and World holds are okay but it’s that BIG Olympic gold that really matters. Go Nastia!!
@rene ruiz and that is not her fault by any means. Her coach, her father created a set of routine that will show the best out of Nastia. If the Code of points were different, her coach would still create a routine that fits her and the code at the same time. Therefore, did she win because of the code of points? Partly. But it mainly because of her execution on 4 events in the AA in Beijing. Shawn had higher difficulty but Nastia was just better than any other gymnast in the field.
@rene ruiz This is actually 100% false because in the later COP where bar connections were devalued, making bars more equal to the other events, they were also MUCH harsher on execution and awarding difficulty. Shawn's "Amanar" or 2.3 twist would have been devalued to a DTY. The judges debated for a long time over giving her the "2.5" and Nellie Kim told the judges to do it, whereas starting after 2008 Shawn would never be credited for it.
The injury Nastia had in 2007 was a blessing in disguise. I feel had she continued with her high-level of performance from 2005 and 2006 into 2007, then she may not have had the same drive and focus going into the 2008 season and the Olympics.
Only major form issue of hers on all four apparatuses is her double tuck. Yet haters make it sound like she's an overall bad-form-gymnast. Actually, other than her double tuck, her form is many times better than many gymnasts.
I love them both, imagine combining Shawn's power and strength and Nastia's grace and beauty and you'd have like a super gymnast, or something. But I love them individually anyways. I'm not very partial to pure athleticism or dance. I think there is something beautiful in doing tricks and in being graceful, and Shawn and Nastia both have such gorgeous personalities to match their moves. How anybody could dislike either of them is beyond me.
gowreesh nath, honestly, no hate at all but if she would’ve been representing the Russian Federation then you’d be ripping apart anyone who’d dare make a comment about her form!!! It’s funny bc I see people saying, “duh, of course her form is perfect, it’s bc she’s Russian!”
Nastia performs like a classic gymnast (good dance, BEAUTIFUL leaps, etc.) Shawn performs like the 'American' gymnast, which is mostly tumbling. Both are good, just different styles.
Nastia inspires me for a lot of things because I'm really tall therefore I have a lot of trouble with gymnastics but she showed that you can do anything
I'm glad she inspires you. She is an excellent gymnast but just fyi she's actually not much taller than Shawn Johnson. She just has rediculously long legs that make her look tall.
Mustafina is my fave gymnast, but I can recognize that she can have form issues, yes, even before her injury. Furthermore, unfortunately, form errors caused by injuries are still form errors.
Compare Mustafina to Liukin? Definitely! Do you not SEE Mustafina's bent knees and MEGA-crossed legs? Liukin crosses her legs but they don't cross past her knee. Mustafina is, of course, a gorgeous performer.
I don't think it's just who wins the OIympic AA. Shannon Miller never won it but she is widely considered one of the best American gymnasts of all time.
@iluvmamagaga It's not that she does explicitly "ballerina stuff" but that her movements have comparable fluidity and style of a ballerina and/or rhythmic gymnast.
@@Andrew-pf5fj Mustafina does harder skills than Nastia but Nastia generally has better form except cowboying (which Mustafina also has on her arabian skills which are easier than front tumbling). Hard to compare bars though....Nastia did those intricate Chinese one armed pirouettes (Healy, Ono, etc.) and Mustafina does lots of transition skills.
@DancerChick458 The thing is, don't get me wrong, Nastia has power but she's more graceful and elegant like you can't see her biceps so much, but Shawn Johnson is more power and strength she's also graceful but they are both still AMAZING gymnasts! It's unbelievable what they can do!
1. Front Handspring front full front double 3. Round off one and a half punch front one and a half 4. Round off two and a half -And I could be wrong on this but I'm fairly sure a Rudi is a front one and a half which would be neither skill in her first pass. I don't mean to be rude, by the way =)
This is incorrect. Her routine is as follows- 1. FHS + Front layout 1/1 + front layout 2/1 2. FHS + Double front tuck 3. Switched ring leap + tour jete 1/2 4. Round off + Back layout 3/2 + front layout 3/2 (rudi) 5. Double L spin 6. Switched leap 1/2 7. Round off + Back layout 5/2
People don't call Shawn Johnson the all-around gold medallist. She was the fourth American senior-classed gymnast to win the All Around World Champion title. What I think you are confused with is everyone else's knowledge of Shawn's win in that part. Everyone knows Nastia was the all around gold medallist. The two have won different titles.
@luv4cookie1 Oh, yeah, a handspring double front is child's play...her twisting elements are much more difficult than any silly double pike dismount that everyone else uses. Besides, this is a shadow of what she used to be, back when she used to compete triples, even a 3.5 twist.
I saw a comment below hinting that Nastia had terrible form (from mustafina101). I don't know much about gymnastics so could someone help me out by pointing out what Nastia should've done better during her twists?
good twisting form is usually marked by: uncrossed ankles, uncrossed knees, straight legs, and both legs together. Nastia's twisting form is decent except for the crossed ankles, but most people have a problem with her double front tuck (second pass) where she has her knees apart, which is called cowboying. examples of bad twisting form are Catalina Ponor 2012 and Aliya Mustafina 2012, although both are wonderful gymnasts besides. Mckayla Maroney and Cheng Fei have great twisting form, and Ivana Hong has a beautifully executed double front tuck
In my opinion Cheng Fei had the best form in every event she competed in after the new scoring system was introduced. In my opinion she is textbook perfect when it comes to form.
Kevin P, I know this is old but of course mustafina 101 said that! Whoever the hell it is dead set that no one, regardless of any success they have/had, is better than the Russians! I like to say every chance I can that if she’d been representing the Russian Federation then they would go after anyone who said anything remotely negative!!!
i thought she was very tall, but now i read that she is only 1,6 m :O I thought she might be at least 1,75 or 1,80. i know in gymnastics it is a disadvantage if you are tall, but compared to shawn she seemed soooo tall.anyway she is phenomenal:) NASTIAAAA GOO
She actually does cross her legs which is a form problem, only it is harder to see at full speed. She's very beautiful to watch, but certainly not perfect.
I understand that gymnasts who have a lot of trouble keeping their legs together will cross them during flight, as the deduction for crossed toes is smaller than the deduction for leg separation
If my memory serves I think she is only five foot one. But she looks taller on screen because of her proportions, her legs are very long for her height. Her mom Anna Kotchneva has the same physical build.
Compared to Ponor, Raisman, Nabieva, Paseka... Nastia does not have good form on UB, but it is better on floor. And Mustafina bends the knee that got its ACL and MCL torn. I think that is excusable.
Nah, it has more to do with personality. The American public likes a cute, bubbly gymnast, a girl next door. That's why Shannon Miller was never popular with the media. Besides, Shawn made smart sponsorship decisions and, of course, DWTS.
In as much as Liukin's form wasn't perfect, it wasn't HORRIBLE. Deduct 0.3 for cowboyed legs, 0.1 for each cross (and she only really crosses on the front fouble full and the 2.5 at the end). It's not much.
@luv4cookie1 "her tumbling is no where near difficult enough to be competitive" hey buddy, haven't you heard? Nastia won the Olympics! and if you want to see a boring COMPETITIVE routine with only the required (i don't know what you meant by "aquired") amount of jumps and difficult tumbling, then go watch Shawn Johnson and quit hating on Nast.

Valeri really knew how to pace Nastia to the T. Nastia said herself she literally peaked the night of the all-around
The injury Nastia had in 2007 was a blessing in disguise. I feel had she continued with her high-level of performance from 2005 and 2006 into 2007, then she may not have had the same drive and focus going into the 2008 season and the Olympics.

Her bar routine is also excellent but her dismount was always very off
Mackenzie Rose I agree it was always hit or miss with Nastia's bar dismount
What's wrong with her tuck form?
cowboyed or largely separated legs
nathaliexlr8 if people think her form is poor... they might want to get a gymnastics judging certification
Nastia was the only gymnastic who has the class, elegance, grace and perfection gymnastics like the old years.
Exactly
Anna Pavlova too.
***American gymnast
What about Aliya Mustafina or Lieke Vevers?
Completely agree. I love watching her perform for these reasons.
honest to god she should be one hell of a ballerina. idk if shes en pointe but seriously she has the body the extension and the grace.
one of her best floor performances for sure
An American gymnast with that kind of artistry and elegance is rare. I'm glad we have Nastia!
for some reason i love her landing on the double front i dont know why i just love it
It matches with the music for me :)
One of the most beautifully performed FX there ever has been

You create alya mustafina.
She is so stunningly graceful! I just don't understand how she has such control of legs that long! haha! incredible
Favorite floor routine of all time.

oh
Dayton Livingston i don't know... 6 inches is quite a bit, especially in gymnastics.
I’m glad Nastia inspires you but she is only 5’3. She just has really long legs
This is my fave floor routine of all time!
1:09 I didn't know Nastia did that! Aliya Mustafina had it for her 2012 floor exercise.
Aliya did that 2008

It's a common choreography trope. Many gymnasts have done it
it's actually pretty recurrent in gymnastics choreography
this is my favorite gymnast ever i first saw her in 2008 olympics.
I love her floor routine.
Ballerina right love
Mustafina is my fave gymnast, but I can recognize that she can have form issues, yes, even before her injury.
Furthermore, unfortunately, form errors caused by injuries are still form errors.
The perfect combination between gracefull and powerfull. Or do you think that double front easy?? She does just like her father.
Best gymnast there ever was, and my most favourite gymnast ever! seriously amazing... :D

In my opinion, best floor routine she has ever done!
watch her on the aa finals of the 2008 olympics, she did perfect
Yeah, seriously watch her AA FX. Better than any she's ever done.
+nathaliexlr8 no. she stumbled a bit on her 1.5 to 1.5.
you are my favorite gymnast
This is pure magic at work here:) This is why she's my role model
Amazing that she can place her heels on the corner, without going over.
I don't think it's just who wins the OIympic AA. Shannon Miller never won it but she is widely considered one of the best American gymnasts of all time.
I love the beginning of the rountine like how she turns her head and does that hand thing it gives a nice edge to it that just gives me shutters!
@iluvmamagaga It's not that she does explicitly "ballerina stuff" but that her movements have comparable fluidity and style of a ballerina and/or rhythmic gymnast.
I LOVE her
its very pretty n complements her style as a gymnast
She is the queen of front tumbling, very difficult and rare!!!
No, she's not perfect, but saying Mustafina has better form is flat out ridiculous!! You can tell Musty has terrible form at full speed!!
She has better form on everything except twisting

She had graceful like the ol' days, something that a few female gymnasts have in these days.

@idonttan
Yes and her flexibility..... I think its the combination of her two parents.....
Artistic Gym pays far better too in the competitions......
Her floor routine
1. Front handspring 1.0 into front double full
2. Front handspring double front
3. Roundoff 1.5 into 1.5
4. Roundoff 2.5
her double front is just...wow♥
Nastia is the best
O_O Just. plain. amazing.
i love the way she slams her feet down in her double front
you can tell in the way she performs her next artistic moves after the double front landing that shes smiling.
amazing job woooh

@hoopsnyoyo15 That was long ago before the ankle injury. Post surgery, she couldn't complete a triple cleanly.
it's awesome how there is not one back handspring in this floor routine!
she definately got her rythmic genes from her mom and her power from her dad
@god
did you do the choreo?
Does she get a cut from people watching her routines?
sooo different from Shawn! she's so graceful.
Her floor routine
1. Front handspring Rudi Rudi
2. Front handspring double front tuck
3. Round off triple twist Half twist
4. Round off triple twist
1. Front Handspring front full front double
3. Round off one and a half punch front one and a half
4. Round off two and a half

2. FHS + Double front tuck
3. Switched ring leap + tour jete 1/2

1st- front full layout to Thomas; 3rd-- round off, 1.5, 1.5 (is this what you were asking? :))
Seeing how good her front tumblings are, I think she also could have performed very well the produnova too.
her legs are gorgeous.
I think my favorite part is at 1:05 to 1:12
That's the most graceful part, I think :D
