I too am a Goan by origin. I think my ancestral deity is the same as Shefali's - one or all three of the Sancoale Trinity (Laxminarcinva, Shantadurga and Vijayadurga). # I am Hindu by birth, Hindu by belief AND Hindu by diet.
Pain and rage can cloud our mind and make us blind to the beauty around us. I am lucky I escaped that fate. The main reason is that I delved deep into Goan music - both both Hindu and Christian, devotional and non-devotional.

When the Portuguese broke the temples can it be called Hindu temples? Fr. Victor Ferrao in his research paper said that the temples which were broken were not Hindu temples as Hinduism is understood in today’s context. “It important to assert that we have not come from Hinduism of today, but the then fragmented cults that today have been steadily assimilated into Hinduism of today,” Ferrao said, quoting noted historian Romila Thapar to back his treatise.
“Though the temples that were demolished were not Hindu, but one(s) that belonged to different cults that have united into Hinduism of today the Hindu community is certainly carrying the pain of this false impression,” the paper reads.[43]
Some of the Brahmins still remained in the old conquests and new Conquests where Catholics were dominant. That is because they made themselves distinct from other Hindus and enjoyed the privileges of the Portuguese Government. Therefore will it be right to say that the Portuguese tried to destroy the Hindu religion? Probably they did not know the difference between the Vedic religions and the other religions. Thus when the new converts were falling back to their old practices meant the cult practices other than just poojas, aartis and bhajans. Since the Portuguese did not know the difference, they just went clubbing every ritual practice as Hindu.

I was born in Goa (My mom Goan ) and bought up in different parts of Karnataka(My dad udipite ,ex. Govt. Employee).
I visited my maternal ancestor house every year. One month Dasaara holidays and two months summer holidays.
Never a spiritual boy. After college and work experience of 5 uears in Mangalore shifted to Goa for work.
I belong to Mahalsa devi mardol family diety. Had no idea about original temple in verna.
I worked in maruti Suzuki showroom at verna. Accidently visited the Verna mahalsa temple. In 2005 it was in small hut temple. Some how I kept visiting this temple. Learnt from temple priest that this was oroginal mahalsa temple. Started visiting with my sister who also happened to work at verna.

FRANCIS XAVIER RESPONSIBLE FOR THE INQUISITION?
Let me first begin with our beloved St. Francis Xavier whom the Goans whether Catholic or Non Catholic alike in Goa (even Hindus) revere with such honor and call him Goycho Saib (Patron of Goa). It is true that St. Francis Xavier suggested that the inquisition be established in his letter to King John III dated 16 May 1546.[19] However it is interesting his letters were not published else where in the books so famously known for his letters but only appears in the writings of Silva Rego’s Documentação para a história das Missões do Padroado Português do Oriente: Índia, Lisboa, 1947-1958 .

“The second necessity for the Christians is that your majesty
establish the Holy Inquisition, because there are many who
live according to the Jewish law, and according to the Mahomedan
sect, without any fear of God or shame of the world. And since
there are many who are spread all over the fortresses, there is
the need of the Holy Inquisition and of many preachers. Your
majesty should provide such necessary things for your loyal and
      faithful subjects in India.”
      III.1.1. Evaluating the letter.
First of all he mentions that the newly converts were living among the Jews and the Mohammedans and they were falling back to these religious laws to which they formerly belonged. He does not mention idolators, or Hindus or Pagans or Heathen practices.
Secondly, no letter of his ever mentions the need of inquisition in Goa prior to 16 May 1546 nor after that. He wrote aletter to King John III on 20 January 1545 from Kochin, India but no mention of Inquisition. Yet another letter from Kochin on 20th January 1548 to King John III does not mention the inquisition. Another letter to king John III from Kochin on 28 January 1549. One more letter to King John III from Malacca in 1549. Yet another letter to King John III from Malacca on 23 June 1549. Letter from Goa to King John III on 10 April 1552. In all these letters there have never been any mention of the inquisition and in fact he never mentioned inquisition in letters written from mainland India (Kochin and Goa). He wrote only one letter from Amboyna and mostly he visited Amboyna only once. Whereas he visited Kochin several times and was often in Goa. There are more than one letter from Goa and Kochin. None of them mention the need of Inquisition[20].
The letter in which this mention is recorded was in fact written from Aboyna, Malacaus. And he refered to it as India.[21] So what is this place? Amboyna Malacaus is modern day Ambona Island of the Maluku Island districts of Indonesia. Undeniably the presence of the Jews and Muslims there was the most populous. As Goa was considered to be the capital of the Portuguese colonies of the East and every place they discovered was considered to be India, hence the modern name Indo-nesia. Its colonial name was “Indian Islands.”[22] Therefore there is raised a question and doubt, did St. Francis Xavier suggest Inquisition in India as such in particular Goa? Or did he mean specifically Amboyna Malacaus and not any other territory? In his previous and later letters as well he had specifically mentioned Goa…why did he not mention it in this letter?

I get your sentiments. The belief system is important. The problem is monotheism is both irrational and illogical. My opinion is agnostic, but I am definitely Hindu. Religion is unhealthy for the society as a whole.
If a single God made the world, why there is so much strife in the world? The monotheist answer is that God works mysteriously. I have a better answer: the one God is a nut.
That is why, I find polytheism rational and acceptable, though I do not subscribe to it. A polytheist can say that there are many gods and each god pushes his/her own interest. A trife-torn world is inevitable.
A plurality in the belief system is essential for the progress of the world. My interest is in working towards truth. As a pluralist, I say work towards truth, as unlike the monotheists, I do not have truth handed over to me.

Certain facts here are exaggerated by shefali to cause a divide in peaceful communities of Goa. No records in archieves or central library about temples being broken by poetuguese.. if such torture was created onlt on hindus how come hindus formed majority during portuguese rule and even now. In that case hindus would be in minority number... all hindu passport holders abroad should revert back to their original nationality return and take assistance from Shefali. All these issues to magnify now instead of moving forward & progressive is work of an excellent govt & organization to just divide minority and majority masses & vote bank politics.

They must have come for trade and spreading Christianity ...the missionaries came later for that... but whh were the hindu Kings of the nation not so strong n united to not allow such a thing to happen in the first place? Goa was being ruled by muslim King Adil Shah when the pirtuguese came. I bet he destroyed few temples too, converted many as well. Portugal is now a democracy..there are no kings. according to the Jewish books, there was a prophecy that someone will be born to a young woman who would be a saviour to the entire world.. that's Jesus. According to his disciples he performed miracles, spoke about His father in heaven..and when he died , he resurrected. His tomb was empty. His resurrection too was predicted.
Christians believe he was am incarnate of God in heaven. And now pray to him and follow his teachings.
Rome accepted xtianity first( they were the main persecutors of Jesus and the Jews) and then they wanted to spread it around the world. The first Bible was written in Greek as most parts of the world were ruled by Greeks, so it was a language adopted by most.. then translated to hebrew, then other languages like English etc. But no where in the bible it says convert by force.. if any xtian has done it ,be it xavier.. he was wrong.

When it comes to Goa, Shefali Vaidya herself has narrated her story of how she is one of those to settlers who came to down to Goa. They belong to the community called Saraswat Brahmins. They used to live near river Saraswati and when it got dried they moved to Goa. But were they the first settlers in Goa? No! The aboriginal or indigenous people of Goa are the Kunbis, the Gauddi, the Kharvi, the Pariahs and other known as chamar, mhar etc. there were also some kshatriya class people from the Maratha region who settled in Goa.[49] The Saraswat Brahmin and the Kshatriya instituted the caste system in Goa and were often with war with the other communities. With their military power and their superiority of their religious claims since they knew to read and write, many of the native aboriginals were suppressed and exploited. Some continued with their ancestral religions and at the same time synchronised their won cults with the beliefs of the Brahminical religions. There are quiet few parts of Goa who do not celebrate Ganesh Chaturthi and Diwali. I was surprised to see this. It shows that there were many religions in Goa who are just classified as Hindus. Thus it can be suspiciously concluded that the Brahmins are now trying to reclaim their superiority which has been challenged by the coming of the Monotheistic religions like Islam and Christianity. St. Francis Xavier was known for his resentment for the caste system and treatment of the lower caste. That’s why the majority of the people of Goa who were once the lower class call him the Goyncho Saib.

Well he could not do anything about it because as a Priest it is demanded of every priest that they remain in their Cassock all the time. Certain liberties were rewarded only after the second Vatican Council (1962-1965).
The inquisition was meant for wiping out Hindu religion and many were burnt at stakes and executed…how true is it?
All the historians agree that the inquisition was not meant for any other but the Newly convert Christians who were falling back to their old practices.
Francis Pyrard, a French traveller, was in Goa during the
period July 1608 to January 1610. In his account of his travels
he gives the following information of the Inquisition of Goa :
The Indian Gentiles and Moors, of whatsover religion,
are not subject to this Inquisition unless they have become
Christians, and even then are not so rigorously dealt with as the Portuguese or New Christians from Portugal, or other Christians
from Europe. But if peradventure an Indian, Moor, or Gentile
inhabitant of Goa, had dissuaded or hindered another that was
minded to become Christian, and that was proved against him, he
would be punished by the Inquisition, as would be he who has
caused another to quit Christianity; such cases often happen.
The reason why they treat these Indian thus rigorously is that
they suppose tluit they cannot be so steadfast in the faith as the old
Christians ; also that it will prevent the rest from being led astray.
For the same reason, too, they permit them to retain some of their
petty Gentile and Mahomedan superstitions, such as not eating
pork or beef, not drinking wine, and keeping to their former
dress and ornaments, that is among men as well as women that
      are become Christians.[27]
In fact there are evidences that the Portuguese brought about certain reforms in the society which the Hindu community had imposed on others and oppressed the lower class and women. For example the Portuguese dealt strictly with Sati.
“ No Hindu woman, living in the territories of Salsete or
Bardez, or in this island of Goa or any other island annexed thereto,
shall bum herself alive on account
In fact there are evidences that the Portuguese brought about certain reforms in the society which the Hindu community had imposed on others and oppressed the lower class and women. For example the Portuguese dealt strictly with Sati.
“ No Hindu woman, living in the territories of Salsete or
Bardez, or in this island of Goa or any other island annexed thereto,
shall bum herself alive on account of the death of her husband.
Any person who causes such a woman to be burnt alive, or for that
purpose render an advice or help, be he a relation of the woman who
has burnt herself or not, shall be liable to the penalty of loss of his entire estate, one half to the person who denounces him and the other for the works of the home of Apostle St. Thomas, and im¬ prisonment for life.[28]
There were forced conversions. Really? The Newly converts were forcefully converted and were returning to their old religion out of love for it…really?? Hindus were persecuted and temples were broken down. How true is it and Was it a regular event?
This is a big question. In fact these are many questions. I formally thought of addressing it one by one but these are interconnected and I may repeat things again and again that’s why I thought of integrating them together. And once again I would like to remind that we need to move from interpreting history to interpreting history in its context and circumstances. We cannot interpret histories according to the mindset and concepts of today. Just some decades ago, some tribes of the African deserts were cannibals, they have recently stopped their taste for human meat. Can you still judge them?
III.3.1. NO FORCED CONVERSIONS AS REGULAR PATTERN
Well, it is true that Afonso Albuquerque used a very easy technique to get the people to be Christians. However, we should know that it was the part of agreement with the local Hindus and the Portuguese under Albuquerque when they sought his help to fight the Muslims. If they were not happy with it shouldn’t they have rather died for their religion instead of converting to new one? Bragging about the situation makes no sense. Therefore, what people like Shefali try to show a picture is that they were forced. Not at all, they had a choice and an agreement. If you ask me whether there forced conversions in times of St. Francis Xavier or if he forcefully converted anyone the I would give a certainly NO.
Let me first begin by saying that in the year 1567 the Portuguese King had come out with the edict that no one should be forced to convert or there would be severe punishment.
“ In the first place it is hereby laid down that it is not lawful
to bring to our faith and baptism any person by force with threats
and terror, because no one comes to Christ by faith unless brought
by the Celestial father with voluntary love and prevenient grace.
Just as a person if by his free will he succumbs to the temptations
of the Devil, perishes, so also if he responds to the call and grace
of God he saves himself. The unbelievers should be brought to
the true faith by the example of our lives, preaching of the
truth of our law and the confutation of their errors so that by
recognition of these things, they will give up their lies, and be
received in Christ, who is the way, the truth and the life. Those
who wish to bring the unbelievers to the true faith must also seek
to cultivate gentleness and goodness in order that they may win
persons to Christ, not merely by their preachings but also by kindness, courtesy and service .”[29]
We should evaluate this edict. It was not merely any other order with a selfish motive behind the mind of the King to protect trade but a deep theological discourse. First of all he quotes the Scriptures to draw his conclusion.
no one comes to Christ by faith unless brought
by the Celestial father with voluntary love and prevenient grace.

All religious persecutions are horrendous and don’t compare Portuguese cruelty to the Hindu or Muslim human rights abuse because no one wins here. Portugal respecte Goa.

What is good about the current years though is that atleast among some, nationalist identity is forming..Like you said, you're proud of your Dharmic ancestors..There needs to be a common ground like that...Otherwise we'll forever keep getting sucked up in identity politics and those outside India who want to keep seeing us divided and weak will continue to get their wish...I'm in favour of nationalism, but an inclusive one...But nationalism has to be there, because for us it's about fighting for dignity in the world, and try to carve out sovereignty by not becoming anyone's complete puppet state..It's not like Western powers for whom nationalism is a taboo...Congress-Left type doesn't recognize this difference, that's why it's a problem...

I fully agree when she says that this story needs to be heard, just like the Kashmir Files. I had visited these so called famous churches when I was younger and then I was so awe struck by their history and heritage. After listening to this , I feel like shit. We have been kept from the truth surrounding these structures. They have been built by destroying temples, killing Hindus, converting them and harassing them. How can they be structures of religion and peace ? You cannot build a religious structure on the rubble of another religious structure. I don't think I want to step into them ever , if I go to Goa. It's not out of hate but out of respect for the untold Hindus that had to sacrifice much more than their lives in Goa. And yes the Vatican has to apologize for what happened in Goa. It's a good trend nowadays, first you commit atrocities and then centuries later some religious head goes around apologizing for.what happened. Bloody bullshit. Let's give the Goan temples their due. Make the maximum people aware about this genocide that occurred in Goa. And if you have some respect for the Goan Hindus and Hindus of Bharatvarsh, then avoid going to these colonial structures and visit maximum temples in Goa. I would love to see a museum on the Goan inquisition being built in Goa. However much you may deny this but every Goan today, no matter what faith, was a Hindu once upon a time. Being a Goan i would like to say this that we the students or children should be educated with this facts at our early age. As we choose our own paths at a higher education, only few get to know about the history of our own Goan Culture and Portuguese inquisition.
I being a Goan just got enlightened to this topic today, same way there are many other Goans who do not know about this deep secret.
Again as u said, we don't want the churches of Goa to be broken down or go against the religion. But the facts should be portrayed as a history of Goa.

Indian PM PVN from Telangana & Shakarao Chavan from NANDED Marathwada region HM under his cabinet ministry were good friends freedom fighters who fought against Razakars of NIZAM which was the special unit of police force created in @ 1940s , just to convert Hindus into islam of course by force & kidnapping ,raping, converting Hindu women .
All of us know very well that in BRITISH INDIA , since 1937 ,MR Mohmmad Ali Jinnah preaident of Muslim leaguetook adamant stand that British should hand over Pakistan exclusively to British Indian Muslims , before quitting India. The last
NIZAM of Hyd princely state ,already being a fanatic muslim was fascinated by MOHD JINN s idea of Pakistan , who wanted to merge his state in Pakistan in nearby future. But major obstacle to achieve this goal was that the state contained 80% + hindu population. Hence he planned to reduce Hindu population as less as to be comfortably added his state to Pakistan . Hence like storm troopers of Nazi Hitler in Germany ,he organised a special armed police force in @ 1940,who would convert or Hindus by threat & kidnapping raping & forcibly converting Hindu girls or women ,similar to Portuguese catholic or jesuites did in 1550 -1625 or what Muslims invaders rulers like Mughal or Adilshaha of VIJAPUR etc.
These Razakars did extreme torture towards Hindus during 1940 to 1948 . But fortunately, Independent India from British got the HM as SARDAR Vallabhbhai Patel, who while merging @ 500 + princely states all over India ,asked the NIZAM of Hyd to get merged in India peacefully. But the fanatic NIZAM outrightly rejected the same ,boasting to fight with India with help of newly born Pakistan & other Muslim nations like Saudi Arebia ,the pioneer of 57 Islamic states. But NIZAM being under prevalence of strong majhabi superficial passion ,undermined Iron man HM SARDAR PATEL & faced the bitter consequences of being deserted from the state .

The caste system as it exists today is the result of developments during the rise of the British colonial government in India. The British Raj furthered this development, making RIGID caste organisation a central mechanism of administration. 1860 the British formulated the caste system into their system of governance, granting administrative jobs and senior appointments only to Christians and people belonging to certain castes.
India provides specific representation to lower caste in education, employment and politics. Based on provisions in the Indian Constitution, it allows the Indian government to set reserved seats, which lower the qualifications needed in exams, job openings etc.
Massive protests, who claimed that the government's proposal was discriminatory, discarded meritocracy and was driven by lower caste vote-bank politics.

You asked about Kerala . There is a difference with Goa The Portugese converted Goa to Roman Catholic. Christanity arrvied in Kerala long before the Portugese. As you probably know the great sism occured on July 15/1054 when the Catholic Church broke away from the Orthodox Church and at that break there actually was a bishop of Malabar at the meeting. Christianity as you know as a Jewish sect. There were Jewish Spice traders in Kerala at the time some of whom seemed to be Christian known as St. Thomas Christians as they claimed Apostalic sucession from Thomas, just like the Catholics claim apostalic sucession from Peter. Later 4th Century Persian Christians arrived, and then Christians from greater Sryia in 6th century this mixture were called the "Theckanbagers Those who had be converted from Hindus were called "Wadkanbagers, early on the two groups would not marry but later when they started to mix they created a marriage cerimony different from Christians anywhere in the world , Christians all over the world exchange rings between the bride and groom but the St. Thomas Christians not only do that but groom ties a chain with a cross around the neck of the bride (the ring comes from the Thetkanbagers and the Necklace from the Wadkanbagers whose ancestors were Hindu) In 1982 I bought a book some time before leaving India written by a Dr. Titus Varegese who the book said was a retired professur from Madras Christian College, I've lost it It also talks about the Catholics and Othodox fighting each other as the newly arrived Portuguse want them to accept the pope and break from the Patriarch. very interesting the Orthdox took an oath before the "Koonen Cruz" saying they would never accept the Pope . I don't know if you can find thebook it is very interesting it shows Christianity came to Kerala in the first century and was protected by the local king who gave land to the Theckangers on side of the town and the wadakanbagers on the other. My sister traced my mother's family to the first century Jewish spice traders called Bagdadi Jews but my fathers to only to 1800s

Some spread the news that he destroyed the culture but the letters prove that he actually learned the native languages, roamed with native people and ate their food. What about his clothings?

Only way to get the Catholic Church to apologize is not to allow the Pope to visit India until he apologizes for the atrocities committed by the church in India, only strong arm techniques need to done.
