Kind of sad that most of the discovery process of phoenix was cut. Just sort of cuts from dying to ego death, to hair brained idea involving the tree, to mechanic solved. Wish I could have seen the actual thought process that went into it, or maybe it was just spoiled for them and they just went with it idk.
We were basically given the answer unfortunately. The raw thought process was essentially what you saw: let's try to combine different elements. Landed on wanting to try ifrit because of his line "snuff out your flame" or whatever, but never got a chance to experiment before we got an extremely heavy-handed hint.
Overall still not too happy with how the mechanic was presented because the fight itself doesn't build into it. The solution is very obscure, even if it's thematically accurate in hindsight. "Ham-fisted" is how we described it amongst ourselves.
I certainly have to agree. Out of all the mechanics in that fight this is the one that is just the weirdest in trying to figure out. I had checked out guides before I ever cleared P8S and so many times the main thing that was going through that mind about that mechanic was "How the hell did all the groups going for world-first even figured out that mechanic?".
Thematically it certainly fits, but still...
@@DrakGamestein I remember on woops' stream him mentioning that was was going to try and I guess "heavily show" that 2 fires make an ifrit or something along those lines. But I do agree the mechanic isn't all too well represented, needing a quote from a previous quest to understand what you need to accomplish.
@@DrakGamestein TBH it could have been addressed just by having there be "wrong" answers for the other 2nd layer fusions. The fact that everyone just explodes if you mix, say, water and lightning, gives the impression mixing combinations is a universal fail-state and not a conditional one.
@@DrakGamestein I wonder how much of the puzzle the devs expected players to look outside of the fight for. For example, we've seen fire + wind mix very easily, in other fights and tiers (Rockthecasba aka E6S), or the fact that phoenix features prominently in Phase 1, and in P3S. It's certainly esoteric though, with not enough hint within the fight.

I found it super funny that the evening this got posted, my group finally got our 8 clear, having taken notes on the mits from watching you guys get your clear live and the healers adjusting what they could get away with resource wise. Congrats on enduring through this tier, we all know just how big a strain this fight took on you guys (Jesse's entire door boss rant on twitter being a prime example), here's to hoping they learn from this fight (and the TOP fiasco) for next tier~

The same feeling of Drak clearing P8s is the same feeling when I finally cleared Ultimate(Ultimate)Weapon with my static after 8 months of progging the fight. Gratz on the clear Drak, and thank you for the hilarious content!
Easily one of the most painful fights in a while and that pop off at the end is the exact same feeling me and my static had, being stuck on part 2 for MONTHS and finally having that release from hell before .3 was absolute euphoria, see y'all next tier!!!

Are we just not gonna talk about how, near the end of the video, Marc apparently JUMPED OVER A FLOOR AOE with perfect timing? I've been playing this game for ten years and I didn't even know you could DO that. UI music is super-appropriate.
Pretty sure that was just server ticks being server ticks, but I think jumping does cause SOME kind of tick wonkiness with AoEs from what I've seen...
Jumping forces your position to snapshot server-side at the same time you land, rather than after 50ms + your latency of delay.
So if you have a ping of 80ms, jumping will snapshot your position 130ms earlier than just running.
