Chamfering Block Build

  • In this video we build a chamfering block for use on the surface grinder. This speeds up the tedious operation of grinding precision chamfers on hardened parts. We modify the design so no grinding or heat treating is needed. A simple project that saves huge amounts of time.

nice! will make one! I use a big magnetic v block but this saves a ton of time not having to wheel a grinder up and down. and now maybe all my chamfers might even be the same size!

As a woodchuck, I'm proud to see the use you're getting out of the block plane! When I started woodworking I was all about finding the best, most efficient way to use power tools to complete a task. But I've come to learn that there are so many tasks that can be completed easier, faster, and with as-good, if not better results, with quality hand tools. Any new and novel use for a tool only increases that tools value.

Pretty cool. If you don't have a grinder an alternative is to make a v cut into a block of delrin, drill a hole down through the block half way down the V, take a broken quarter inch endmill, grind the endmill flat, then grind half of it away at the end, then grind a relief, put the cutter in the hole so it so it can cut a chamfer as you push stock along it. you can add set screws for adjustment and tightening the cutter

I could see some significant bowing on the plastic part right at the top middle. That would result in wider chamfers as you apply higher pressure. I would advise you to make that top portion of the plastic jig out of steel. Hold it down with two screws similar to how you did the bottom. just section it off at the "V" valley parallel to the bottom.

That top part that was vibrating when you milled it may flex as you move the parts across the wheel, which may explain why you hard more of a chamfer on that edge you were questioning. Maybe you could mount a plate across the top to keep that plastic from bowing if you press the part into the wheel too hard.
