If you really get into them, check out Frances' solo album from 2006, Freshman Year. It's really ridiculous and quirky and simple but it's so enjoyable and has such a strange variety of songs. There's a song about flying away and dying in a hot air balloon, one about being a squirrel. It's just a lovely little album.
Hop Along is my favorite band, and Freshman year is godlike to me. I used to listen to it every day for almost 2 months at work because it was the only album I had on my phone at the time. I never got tired of it. I bought the album off of bandcamp, and fuck i love it so much. I bring it up because I bought bark your head off, dog. on vinyl (the limited edition colored one) as soon as it was available to buy, and as a devout fan of theirs for a while now I have to say compared to their earlier albums and freshman year, i just dont like this one as much. I feel like they've reached a point where stylistically and in terms of production their sound has gotten TOO clean. I dunno. I haven't been able to get through the entire album even yet. Maybe it'll grow on me.

As Bark Your Head Off is my first listen of the artist, I’m probably akin to their current sound, which is in my taste. From the little bit I’ve sampled from Freshman Year, I will like that as well. I really loved this album! I agree that it's more relaxed and that the lyrics have improved. I've always loved Hop Along's storytelling, but Fox in Motion and How Simple's lyrics are even more evocative than previous albums. For future reviews, I suggest looking into a band called Mother Mother, if you haven't already. Their album O My Heart is a great place to start.
The album ,for me at least ,is very melodic and enjoyable. I heard one of the songs on the radio ironically enough and it was one that suits me and i was instantly hooked . I have a tie between my favorite tracks the two being one that suits me and somewhere a judge because those have just beautiful hooks .

Great review, but I think there's a fairly clear overarching theme. The line "strange to be shaped by such strange men" comes up in multiple songs and I think that pretty neatly sums it up tbh. It's about deferring to men/people you consider powerful, when in reality they're are just as flawed as anyone. In not abel I guess that person is God, in how you got your limp it's the professor, in one that suits me its "your old man", in what the writer meant it's the writer. Etc. I'm not great at explaining thematic shit but that's the gist of it

This is a near perfect album imo. An easy listen with great grooves and moving vocals. Its my first 10/10 of the year definitely

I really loved this album! I agree that it's more relaxed and that the lyrics have improved. I've always loved Hop Along's storytelling, but Fox in Motion and How Simple's lyrics are even more evocative than previous albums.
