I am with you. I have had friends tell me that my upbringing was like a Lifetime Movie Special. I have little empathy for those that use their upbringing as an excuse for their bad behavior or as a crutch to explain why they can't succeed in life.

my father died when i was 2 , my brother was 5, I was a victim of SA at age 7, we do not murder people, I do not have a lack of empathy, I do not hurt people, I have MS , OCD, Cancer survivor, and Complicated grief disorder, along with depression. I have never wanted to nor plan to kill anyone so that is not a justified answer for why they committed murders. Millions of people suffer mentally and millions of people lose parents young yet all of us millions do not murder people. That is gross cop out to not be held accountable.

To plan murder you have to have an innate lack of empathy. He never once stated everyone suffering from mental illness feels the urge to commit atrocities, only the proven illnesses everyone who did these heinous acts shared in common. Stigmas exist but outright denying the suffering these sicknesses cause is grossly ignorant at best.

Life can be difficult from a young age. Becoming a multiple killer or serial killer and using this as an excuse doesn't work as a defense. It does, however work as an excuse. T.J. Layne is the most egregious example of this kind of homicidal narcissim. He didn't fair well in prison in spite of his murderous behavior and disgusting courtroom behavior. He attempted escape and failed. His life is an eventual burning in hell.

My guess is he did not slip through the cracks so much as he was forced through them, in other words, everyone passed the buck not wanting to be the one who deals with him. My mother smacked me around as a kid. But the worst part was not being hit. She repeatedly screamed at me at the top of her lungs for any old reason for 14 years. I was an only child (boy). It was just me and her. I had enough of it so I moved in with my father. Her screams were so bad, that it gave me ptsd. Whenever I hear a fire truck or an ambulance or any sirens, I have to hold my ears shut, because the sound is so reminiscent of those screams. If I dont cover my ears, it makes me angry and violent. I know it doesn't compare to being beat with a hockey stick.

I might be a hardliner with this, but my believe is that a person, any person, should be judged and charged mainly and primarily based on whether they actually committed the crime, or not.
Nothing else. No age, not if they happened to be drunk, or high on drugs, no matter if they claim they heard the voice of Jesus or Satan or something, telling them to do the crimes etc.
If they actually, truthfully, committed their crime, they should be held accountable for it accordingly. It's pretty sad to see that this approach will probably never become the general consensus. Protecting the criminal is more important than protecting the victim, after all, as we see it time and time again. Regardless, it's still the view how I hold it.
