    Thanks for clearing up any misinformation out there about welsh mythology! I was born and raised in Wales, and believe that the welsh mythology needs to be talked about more, but it’s hard to start a genuine conversation when people are spreading misinformation out there.

    It's good to find a straightforward factual historical testimony with original source material on a culture's mythology, folklore, &/or religion. I found the disputed video and agree it seems like timestamp says 7:43 + "cheap,, silly over romantic fairy tale which is definitely not Rhiannon's story."

    I am welsh, born and raised in south wales but sadly there is next to no focus on welsh myth in school. We were not ever informed of our wonderful and magical culture, the lessons in school were boring and monotonous, they turned me off wales and being welsh, no passion, fire or spark was ever present in the lessons. It was only when I reached my mid twenties that I found the mabinogion and I have been fascinated ever since. I reawakened my own pride in being welsh and I have a very deep interest in welsh myth and folklore.
    I feel often that the welsh culture is viewed as open to all,it influences many aspects of modern culture yet is barely referenced if at all.
    Now I have a different relationship with the mabinogi and I certainly feel as though I am leaning towards certain figures from the stories specifically Rhiannon and Blodeuedd.

      Please be genuine, don't follow just because it's a trend ..
      Stevie Nicks is a lovely lady , witchy ,glamorous and cool , she was able to reinvent herself with the younger generation by talking about abortion, sad to me.. our bloodlines are very important,
      Stevie told lies , sweet little lies 🤥 to get their money ... Her song Sara she once told us older fans was about a Friend of hers .. but to get in with the new generation she told them it was about her and Don's aborted child ...
      I don't like liars .. I'm so torn about my feelings I try to be understanding, but someone's words are powerful..it's more valuable han any money they have .. anyhow I'm rambling I suppose ... Have a great day .

    I think I know the video you were speaking of. Some people do things half heartedly, or for views. I see a lot of places where the gods and goddesses in mythology get taken out of context for the sake of getting views. They usually add all this doom and gloom and social drama to the stories by "emphasizing" twisted ways to view them. I get it! Plus, if people knew the greatest truths of these types of lore, and the reasoning behind them, they would see why changing them is like commiting blasphemy against the stories purpose. What I'm speaking of is the esoteric meaning hidden behind the stories and what they were meant for (as well as what they are still used for by magick orders and schools in this day and age). When people hear a falsified version, all it does is confuse people into erroneous falsities that mislead people away from the point and purpose of the stories, including the benefits and changing the stories is why these texts and scriptures get corrupted throughout time -(ignorance).

    Very nice video dispelling may of the false info of Rhiannon and the Maginogi that unfortunately infests the net. I am curious on one thing. You mentioned that Celtic Gods aren't typically a "God of a Certain Thing" could you explain what you mean by this as in most religions/mythologies I have studed all Deities have certain attributes or facets of reality and nature that they rule over so I am interested to see how this differs from other mythos.

    • @KrisHughes
      @KrisHughes  Рік тому +3

      Thanks for your lovely comment. First, I don't know about many mythologies, my focus is Celtic, yet I know enough about a few Greek/Roman deities to see that they have fairly wide "portfolios". Apollo is a good example of this - sun, healing, poetry, prophecy, music ...
      We might also have a slightly different way of looking at all this. I certainly don't think of (Celtic) deities as "ruling over" something. The Tuatha Dé Danann, for example, are associated with skills, and some are only associated with one skill (usually the ones with less developed stories), but many clearly have multiple skill, and most are also warriors. Then there's Lugh, who's known for having all skills. I suspect that this outlook isn't unique to the Irish and the Tuatha Dé, but pertains much more widely in Celtic cultures. So, I'd say, yes, deities have things we associate them with, due to their stories, but I don't think they are limited by that, or defined by it.

    I believe revivalism is a valid way to connect to a deity, but I do also believe it’s important to distinguish when you’re talking about modern interpretations and beliefs and when you’re talking about ancient source information

      @@KrisHughes right. Like even if you wanted to evolve a figure, sure, religions evolve literally ALL THE TIME. But it’s also very harmful to straight up just not at all acknowledge the difference between the “evolved” portion and what we actually have from our ancestors. Like I can kinda see how she’s connected to fae by the mystical and somewhat supernatural entrance in the beginning of the first branch, but to extend it so far as to call her a deity that represented the fae or being a “queen” of fae is a bit of a stretch. Stretch or not though it should actually be specified when it’s speculative and when it’s found in actual facts

    While facts are important, A culture , a name that is living , like a language, will evolve and change or die.

      Guest's translation of the Mabinogion is okay. You might enjoy a newer, better, more accurate one even more. If you're interested in Rhiannon, I'd suggest Patrick K Ford's translation, as his notes on Rhiannon are really illuminating.

      What I mentioned is the Four Branches of the Mabinogi. These are Medieval Welsh stories, but they have been translated into English a number of times. You can read them online for free here: www.mabinogi.net/translations.htm or you could get a paperback copy like "The Mabinogi and other Medieval Welsh Tales" by Patrick Ford, or "The Mabinogion" by Sioned Davies.
      That was a great question. I should have shared that information along with the video, really!

  • @edwardlecore141

    I was dreading watching this as I thought it would be another one of those videos that claim all sorts of things beyond the source material. I came to this video just after seeing one where someone recounted the 4th branch and changed literally every line to match a narrative and it seriously annoyed me. I am writing a series of novels based on Welsh mythology and it seems I may attract some problematic attention at times. Some people won't let the material speak for itself but have to filter it all through an agenda. I agree that it is disrespectful.

    I totally understand your frustration Celtic mythology unlike Greek mythology is not as well documented and the population is far less informed therefore Celtic mythology is loaded with BS landmines like these phony youtubers spouting utter rubbish because they know that people don't know the truth or where to find good academic sources. This is a frustration I have encountered myself in trying to learn about Celtic history and mythology.

    • @KrisHughes
      @KrisHughes  2 роки тому +5

      And yet, excellent modern translations of the Mabinogi are widely available in inexpensive paperbacks, and even for free online. My experience is that a lot of people are too lazy to read Welsh and Irish myth in translations because it doesn't read like modern fiction. They prefer someone to give them a synopsis and make it a bit more exciting in the process.

    • @KrisHughes
      @KrisHughes  Рік тому +5

      It's completely bonkers! I haven't heard it, but people will say anything. a) There's no actual evidence for the existence of Lilith or the Adam and Eve story. It's mythology. b) Although I revere Rhainnon as a goddess, there is no reason to believe that She ever existed as a human, so how would anyone be reincarnated as Her? I actually find the idea (not your question, it's fine to ask) pretty offensive.

    . I knew that’s the one you were talking about.
    I think another title is excessive, but as the name is related to forgiveness and enduring hardship with Grace.
    Now for some of the many titles associated with the name.
    Queen of Faeries. This is a title long , long associated with the name.
    It does NOT however mean the Name RULES the faeries. 😆
    So u can probably see how that is and could actually work.
    Unicorn is associated. Long long long ago the Deer and the Horse were of the same family in a way that is only distantly true today , having branched quite distinctly.
    The Unicorn both points to this and hides this as became they way of surviving under Christianity.
    ISO many animals and titles is burdensome but it feels the puzzle will not be effective without them all
    And the only video that made me angry was by witches blank and Blank when she said Rhiannon didn’t want a frog . Then gave her a Spider.
    It’s fine for her to not use the frog of course, but to say that . To suggest that.
    It upset me greatly.

    I have been wondering for a while now how the female figures from welsh mythology have become associated with Avalon? A lot of the time the welsh sources aren't even credited or mentioned! I also notice the same with Gwyn ap Nudd. Most of the info is fantasy and not based in the facts or reality at all! I personally feel that if you work with a figure from mythology and it stirs or evokes certain emotions reactions or thoughts then that is ok, its personal and the journey is unique to each person but to not reference the original source and to present your own experiences as fact is very wrong and it misrepresents the culture that you are taking sources from !!!!

    • @KrisHughes
      @KrisHughes  Рік тому +3

      Yes - it's that representation of personal ideas as fact that's the problem - especially when it bears no relation to genuine cultural material. You might find this video about 'Avalon' interesting. ua-cam.com/video/nKnUsdd9LQM/v-deo.html
