    Couldn’t agree more! Our oldest (of our four sons) has said that he wanted to be a fireman since he was 4 or 5, he never quit saying that. Fast forward to age 16 & he became a volunteer as soon as he was old enough. Fast forward another 21 years!! He is still a volunteer with the same fire station, with the title of lieutenant. His number of years I guess because he doesn’t get paid one red cent. But he loves it. When I think of the hours of training that he has done over the years....it amazes me. He is also a First Responder. I never imagined that my sweet five year old who said hw wanted to be a fireman when he grew up...would still be living his dream at the age of 37. I am proud of him for what he does, has done and will continue do. Volunteer firefighters have all of my love and respect. 👨🏼‍🚒🚒🚨🚨❤️

He makes realistic siren sounds all day iimitating each and every rescue vehicle siren perfectly. My little Cam man says he is going to be a firefighter when he grows up big and strong! @@noneofyourbusiness4551 depends were they live. here in Pa most of the areas outside of the big cities like philly are all volunteer. we do it not for pay but to help out our communities and our neighbors. these guys in this video are volunteers, like most coal town ashland is a small town up in the coal regions of Pa. it is an old but beautiful town but too small to pay a full time fire station(s) to cover the town. i volunteered for 10 years till i hurt my back at work and could no longer do it. i live just outside of reading Pa and all the fire companies are volunteer as well.

      I didn't get a close enough look at the 1981 Mack/Baker tower ladder you mentioned but there's a chance it may have been a former FDNY rig. Many volunteer fire departments in the northeast USA and beyond purchase used FDNY rigs, have them completely rebuilt and refurbished and afterwards place them into service with their department. It's much less expensive than purchasing a brand new rig and it may add another decade or more of service life to the rig for it's new owners.

      The Job of a fire department is to "Eliminate the Threat Quickly and Safely while using the Least amount of water." What if you run out after wasting what you had? Water has to be Surgically Applied to the burning material. You STOP, THINK and THEN you find the burning material, get a Line of Sight on it and then apply the water in a way that you can wet down the most material with the least amount of water. You Have to be Thinking every second you are there. When you are applying water, you may have to actually move your feet to the sides and forward and back to do that. Watch 10 years of these videos and LOOK for firefighters that stand in one spot and squirt an Endless stream of water on One Spot while the rest of the structure burns around that spot. I HATE Ground Monitors for That reason. They enable people with weak work ethics to sit on their asses and do Nothing

Age, type construction, row home, time of day, head start of fire (IE: Conditions on arrival) I can NOT say this department did a bad job, in fact quite the opposite. The buildings that are a TOTAL loss on arrival are normally wrote off, and efforts are concentrated on areas that CAN be saved, and stopping the fire. Your fire and this one I'm certain are totally different. I am VERY thankful your outcome was a favorable one.

    When a fire starts in one of those old wooden row homes in the Coal Region they go up in almost no time at all. Most of those homes were built between 1870 and 1920 when anthracite mining was booming. There are old dry timbers and old electric wiring. Apparently in many of those old attached homes the attics are a common space and when a fire gets into the attic it spreads extremely quickly. Thank heavens no one was injured or killed. Those firefighters did an excellent job. Were it not for them the damage would have been even worst and there could have been injuries or fatalities.

      HVAC and electrical systems may well be outdated however I think instead of demolishing the structures it would be much cheaper to gut the structures to the bone and replace. The following are options for renovation and or replacement. The HVAC and electrical and plumbing systems to modern day standards, the bones of the structure while exposed can have fire retardant and anti mold and mildew treatments applied. Residential sprinklers and use of fire resistant materials for the finishes are other considerations. Don't give fire a chance controlled it is a friend let your guard down and it will become a dangerous and destructive enemy.

What do you live in? Light weight wood framed home, surrounded by fast combustion materials? Most homes built in the US are of that type of construction. These are people’s dreams and hopes, what they worked tirelessly for for many decades, with their belongings gone forever. House 1 lost house 2 nearly lost but structurally unsafe but no fireman inside house 3 fighting the fire until it’s taken the roof space.I suppose in the USA most houses are timber framed so obviously much more vulnerable to fire wipe than in the uk where nearly everything is built from brick or block so it gives much more opportunity to fight fires from inside.Hats off to all fireman oh have to call them firefighters now around the world.It’s one of the most underestimated jobs out there,but when I was a fireman in London starting in 1976 we were told 1 in 4 of the uk population would require the fire service at least once in there lives! Don’t think that’s the case so much now as fire prevention has really improved 👍👍🇬🇧

      There was no going in the house showing the most fire in the video because it had collapsed on the Left(2) side from attic down. You just can't see it on the video unless you know where to look. That house did eventually collapse anyway. Yes mostly built with wood. Our brick buildings are usually an exterior covering like stucko. The true brick buildings are old and always are collapse hazards. Thanks for the comments!.

    Great video, but wait,@ 2 minutes and 21 seconds what's the reason for 2 firefighters putting a roof ladder up in front of the front porch to ladder the porch NEXT to the steps that go up to the same location?, I'm missing something here?🤔 @ 5 minutes and 35 seconds does he have a 1 " booster line or a garden hose between structure 2/3 ?

    • @FDNY8231
      @FDNY8231  5 років тому +5

      Hehe Funny the things that are caught on video ... I wondered that myself, and to be honest I don't think it was booster line, I just think it was the low water pressure that made the stream small thru that fog nozzle.

      Old neighborhoods are being liked that. Most ofed those wires are telephones and cable TV wiring

    • @BenjaminEsposti
      @BenjaminEsposti 5 років тому +2

      I grew up in an older neighborhood where the wires were above ground.
      I now live in a newer ("newer" ...~50 years old) area with the wires underground.
      Cost is a big reason. It costs many times more to put the wires underground, and is easier when you're building new, whereas it's harder (thus even more costly) when you've already got existing pipes underground like in an already built-up area. It also costs more to repair underground cables, underground power lines are less efficient due to capacitance with the earth, and you still have transformers to deal with (normally here they're put on a concrete pad (search "padmount transformer") and painted green. An underground vault is possible, but, again ... more expensive.).
      We don't have nationalized utilities unlike in Europe, so we do not have extremely high taxes to pay for electrical utility and such. Because of various cost-saving measures, we can live with a greater quality of life by spending elsewhere. And yes, our systems aren't perfect, either. But they're better than in many other countries, and I'm thankful for that!

    The fact that they saved the exposure on the Bravo side is a miracle! But I see the same problem I see in almost every fire situation...the positioning of the fire apparatuses. The ladder truck was pretty much useless because it couldn't get anywhere near the fire. Did it even get any water on it? The firefighters do a great job, but can't we do a better job of positioning?

    • @FDNY8231
      @FDNY8231  3 роки тому

      That ladder did get to the front, but it was after I stopped filming. They had 5 houses fully involved on arrival that's why it didn't get in front right away. I think they setup for exposure protection initially.

    In Britain we have "terraced" housing, houses joined together in a row, but they are built of brick, so in a fire only one house will get burnt, as long as the attics all have gable walls so the fire can't travel along the roof space. I see a firefighter cutting a hole in the neighbouring roof for vertical ventilation; I don't think British fire brigades do this. Although I like European fire helmets best (in Britain) it's good seeing all the firefighters wearing the classic American 8- comb helmets.
