    Steve's comment about the sink faucet and the window are the most relevant part of building today. With plans changing, details left undefined and just working with the latest products all ads up to the struggle of as a man once said "We also know there are known unknowns; that is to say we know there are some things we do not know. But there are also unknown unknowns-the ones we don't know we don't know. And if one looks throughout the history of our country and other free countries, it is the latter category that tends to be the difficult ones." Thats what keeps us up at night, leaving enough slush in ever tightening plans to end a project in success.

    I read the entire Ryan’s ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxGqOCINHE0Z0E5gxzSdNi9NWGugRY5Hm2 Plans and was able to make a shed plan. Using Ryan’s Shed Plans alone, the shed itself is great. Where I wish I knew more is with respect to ground preparation and foundations. Maybe that's beyond the scope of Ryan’s Shed Plans.

      There is much less of a need for opening windows when the envelope is so tight with a great Zehnder ERV. Also, regarding the sink comments, one of the best decisions is to use a 57" Kraus Kore sink that is truly a "system", making sink space a food prep area, not just a place to clean dishes. That requires two faucets and Steve's design allows for that without any impact from the opening window. The sink was a decision made even before we found the property!

    Why did you go with a vented roof vs a conditioned attic space? So many of the Build Show videos demonstrate the advantages of conditioned attics. Love all the small details. The homeowners will have a fantastic home for years to come.

    • @davidbruce5377
      @davidbruce5377 Рік тому

      I don't think, you will see many episodes promoting a conditioned attic on the ZIP channel. This group knows, its not a suitable solution for their DYI audience. Its very difficult to eliminate the possibility of trapped moisture. Its just a product demo channel now. The subscriptions has stalled now. My concern with ZIP is it claims a perm rating, different from OSB. How can that be?

    • @stevenbaczekarchitect9431

    Steve I hope you make time to get a physical exam and drops some #s… you are way too smart and have way too much to share w/ your audience, do pls do plan on being around a longtime…. Really enjoyed the discussion regarding the lay of the land and how the house design and geography of the raw lot along w/ the desired final lot design and layout all come together… the walk out (forced walkout) basement, the daylight windows w/ legal egress and the basement direct entry from the garage, are all things I had put into homes that I’ve built in Ohio, Indiana and now Arkansas - the incremental cost to put them into the design was negligible relative to the total cost, yet the tangible benefits and the “that’s so cool” comments from buyers when we’ve moved on from those homes, shows just how much value you can get from a bit of advance planning and minimal sunk costs

    • @scottrodman
      @scottrodman Рік тому +1

      The bulkhead was a late decision that has already shown huge value, just in the construction process. Shea Concrete, a local company, made that and delivered and installed it in a way that made that 5.700 lb unit drop in place with relative ease. Great decision to include it and the Bilco door will go over that as soon as the framing is done. This and the stairs to the garage make the space much more useful, thanks to Steve. The structure for those stairs are providing the structure for the stairs to the loft. That is found space that will also have an AtticLift, another great addition.

      Steve and the structural engineer planned for that in the roof structure, with additional I-joists to allow for drifting next to the angled roof sections.

    Have never heard of the Radon installation. Could anyone tell me what that's about?

    • @scottrodman
      @scottrodman Рік тому +3

      For more information, take a look at the radon bonus episode. That explains what was found in the house that was taken down (radon at 16) and what was found in a number of nearby homes as a result of what we found. Radon was a big discussion many years ago but seems to have been forgotten. It is the second leading cause of lung cancer and the first among those who have not smoked. The EPA recommends testing every year in homes that do NOT have a remediation system and every two years in houses that do. After what we learned, I cannot imagine NOT having an electronic device in place that is monitoring the radon level all year long. Radon levels change depending on the season. What we used were AirThings radon monitors. There are some that have an LED display that shows the level of radon from the sensor and there are more expensive units that will work over wifi to send the data to an app and provide data on an ongoing basis.

      @@scottrodman Wow !!!
      Don't know if it wasn't a thing in Australia, or if we simply had more lenient (bloody slack) environmental regulations.
      Radon is a noble gas though, so I'm guessing that something may have bonded to it weakly.
      But wow, shocking what you learn, eh.

    38:54 the truth is the carbon footprint of these homes is enormous just like the tire cost of electric cars. Exotic materials. Advanced tech. The windows alone are going to require decades to return the investment put in to production,shipping and install.
    I like the architect vision that this home will outlast multiple families. Building like Europe with the intent of lasting hundreds of years is the only way you can live in a home like this and begin to talk about the environment or climate change as if it was virtuous to live like this.
    I have no problem with wealthier individuals indulging themselves with their money. Just don't preach to me as if you were saving the planet while doing it.
