But no, that record got claimed just 5 years ago to the day of publishing this, and it still stands as the all-time record in miles spent at the front.

@@saylemwitch This is true, but let's not pretend NASCAR fans are much better. Or sportscar fans. Or even some Indycar fans. Motorsport fanbases these days have an unrelenting and annoying tendency to bitch and moan about one team leaving the rest in the dust. Every race has to bring the house down or it isn't worth watching. Thus why F1 is going to penalize title winners with less wind tunnel time starting next season, NASCAR's added stages to pack the field back up again and encourage passing, and sportscar racing has BoP and success ballast.

The 2016 fall Dover race had 6 cars finish on the lead lap, *and Truex winning.*
If I remember correctly though, there were no cautions in the second half and fuel mileage was huge that day.

The 2017 Cup race at Kentucky had 9 cars on the lead lap, one of which (Kyle Larson) would later fail tech inspection. And you know who won that race? Truex.

When Truex has a competitive car, he's just blistering fast. When I went to Darlington in May, he reminded me of this 600.

I'm bummed that you never mentioned Pearn's makeshift independence rear suspension. He had modified the rear U bolts so that they flexed in the corners. Give me that gray area engineering.

I remember watching this race on TV, my dad kept asking me who was in the lead and every time I said "Truex.... still" toward the end of the race I started to realize the history I was witnessing and I loved it.
That's the "problem" with motorsport: what spectators want is the opposite of what teams want.
Spectators want races with a lot of overtakes, fighting, crashes, entertainment.
Teams want races where they get good points, taking the car home in one piece, and so they'll work to achieve the fastest and safest car.
A team's perfect race is a snooze-fest for the spectators, while a race to remember for the spectators is a nightmare for the teams.
Truth. The question eventually arises: should sports be focused on the teams and players, or the fans? The ideas are so diametrically opposed that it's basically one or the other, or nobody's happy.
I believe there are layers of fans. Many fans are like what you described, but there are a subset who wanted a nice clean race (with a pinch of those good ol' Random Number God roll) with little to no drama.
@@Lakhshamana what you say is true, but those you mention are, sadly, a very, very small minority. I myself am part of that subset, I love the strategy and precision of tactics, but to understand what are the proportion: remember a couple of years ago all those protests on the net against the introduction of the "halo" in F1, with people left and right claiming "F1 cars are already too safe"? That's the majority sadly

Larson was a challenger but came up 65 laps short. Still, very impressive that he won by over 10 seconds.
In Larson's interview he said towards the end of the race there was a car that passed him that was laps down but had pit and had new tires. He was able to draft off of him and extend his lead. I thought that was absolutely genius.
I'm going to use this video to answer the question of how I can put up with watching F1 races in the early 2000s when Michael Schumacher was curb stomping everyone a lot of the time

being from Colorado at the time, it was extremely emotional to see our home town team win such an important race

@@djobe420 most of the cars were shipped off I believe. That chassis ended up getting wrecked beyond repair at homestead in 2016 from what our shop tour guy told us in 2018.
But if you go to The Showroom @ Furniture Row in Denver (upscale furniture row location) they have a bunch of cars displayed in a hangout sort of area that has a couple older Furniture Row cars, a gen4 Jeff Gordon car, a US Army #01 mb2 motorsports car, a 32 tide ride, and the car from the 2017 championship race.
I saw it in October of 2019 so no idea if it's still the same

Growing up in Denver and seeing furniture row grow to what it did was amazing. This race for me was fantastic.

I had the pleasure to be at this race and watch this feat firsthand. It was the worst 600 I have ever been to but I am still in awe of what transpired.
I was listening to Jimmie Johnson's radio at the time when his crew got him off of pit road before Truex did, and the following restart made me realize we were watching something special. After 3 laps or so, Truex walked away from the field after getting around JJ. He radios to Chad Knaus and says "I have never seen a car that much faster in all my years of racing."
When the 7-time champion tells his crew he was in awe of what was happening, I knew it was something special.
Truex just straight up Dominated that Coke 600 in 2016, Looking back at it, this was the Stepping Stone for Truex's Legendary 2017 Championship Season

Whilst I have experienced the pain and loss that cancer brings just as Martin Truex did, his determination to break out of the depression that followed made him my driver for life. My dad succumbed to the torment that is stage 4 brain cancer in 2012, and I can comfortably say that without this channel showing MTJ's spirit and talents to the world; and serendipitously to myself, I don't think I'd still have the drive to keep living.
So, I'd like to say thanks. Social media may take lives on occasion, but you've saved this one.

I remember the final restart of the race, as a Jimmie fan, seeing him absolutely push it to the limit trying to take the lead from Truex and coming so close to clearing him was so cool. Was the only guy in the entire race that managed to actually pass Truex on track under green for the lead.
I live down the street from where the FRR shop was. Huge truex fan and absolutely loved the dominant performance he had that night even if most fans don’t. Just great to see a good guy get a dominating win and make some insane historical achievement in the process
I just started watching NASCAR properly this year. The first race I watched was the final race of the year 2021. I remember hearing Truexs crew chief was an Aussie, so I picked him as my driver. Now thanks to this channel I've learned some good stuff about NASCAR and love it.

Kyle Larson's and all of Hendrick Motorsports over the past two weeks have been simply dominant, the race last night was also a masterclass, and shows that the record mtj holds, might not last much longer

I’m a huge MTJ fan.. he s a huge Philly sports fan n that was all I needed to start following him. I gotta admit I never dreamt that he would be this good. He has blown away my expectations for him. I went back and watched this race the other night apparently one of my favorite movies in recent years, Logan Lucky, was filmed at Charlotte during the race for certain parts of the movie.

I was at Darlington a few weeks ago when Truex put on a similar butt whooping on the field. He led 248 of 293 laps that day and at one point had a double-digit second lead over 2nd place during stage 2. When he has a perfect set up Truex dominates the competition, making very few if any mistakes behind the wheel.
I remember watching a 20 year-old Cole Pearn race in the CASCAR Super Series, the predecessor to the NASCAR Pinty's Series.

If you guys like a Master Class in motor sport, 1 that will probably never be repeated is the 1990 Mexico F1 Grand Prix. Alain Prost, called by his fellow racers "The Professor", on a Ferrari, started 13th, dropped to 15th place after the start not wanting to be involved in an accident and went on to win the race by passing everyone in front of him. Not one place was won by a retirement or a crash, he had to pass all 14 cars in front of him.
You can find plenty of youtube vids on the subject.
The course was very bumpy and Prost realized it was futile to try to get a good starting position with his car, so he used all the time in the qualification to perfect the race setup, and the rest is history !

I remember watching this race like it was yesterday and the rollercoaster it was being a MTJ fan. Leading up to this race MTJ was so close to winning just would come up just short for one reason or another, especially in Daytona to open the season. I was fully expecting something, ANYTHING to happen in the closing laps where Truex would lose the lead and the race to Harvick, but it never happened. For Truex to no only win but dominate the race and lead the final lap was so dam fulfilling
I was gonna comment the same thing. I was wound up so tight, expecting something to go wrong like had happened so many other times previously, that I don't think I was even breathing those last few laps.
It felt like the perfect setup for heartbreak- Truex had broken the record for most laps led at that race, you had "Mr. Where-did-he-come-from?" Kevin Harvick running in second and closing, and again, there had already been so much heartbreak when he had been doing well that you just expected the fates to pull the rug out from under him one more time in a big way. Thankfully, Truex got the well deserved win. I feel like that win helped them win the championship the next year, as it gave them the confidence that they needed, and they ran really well the rest of the season, before dominating the next season.
You hit it spot on. I like watching an absolute dominating performance once in awhile even if it is by somebody I do not like and that is for any sport. I just don't want to see it every week or every game.
A little crazy that he talks about this and just a few days later Kyle Larson crushes the 2021 Coca-Cola 600. He is racing for Hendrick, not a small team, but he still had a freaking field day.

Watching the 2017 Nascar season there were multiple races where I had to sit back and appreciate what Martin Truex Jr was doing. I remember one race, I think it was Dover, where there were about 12 cars on the lead lap and second place was half a lap back. Almost every race he was at the front, was in contention to win, won the race, or flat out dominated. I was by no means a Truex Jr fan but man they had the dream team back then and it showed.
I’ve seen a few races recently where 8th place was a lap down and I’ve been sitting there going “god it would be cool to see somebody lap the field again.” Glad to know I’m not the only one.

When I started watching NASCAR, I became a Truex fan, watching around late 2015, when I've learned of his career, I rooted for him even harder. At first, 2016 felt like Truex was just having heartbreak after heartbreak, especially Kansas and Texas that year. Fourteen year old me rooted for this guy rabidly.
I'm not lying when I say this, I was nervous the entire race, I kept thinking Truex was gonna have something happen to him, he'll wreck, he'll get passed... but no, he kept going, and it was amazing. That race is probably my favorite ever, I was so happy to see him break through that year. And 2017 was even better.

This was Redemption from the Spring Kansas race of that year as a Truex Fan because of my stepdad liking him and watching that race it was heartbreaking to see him lose that one.
Cale Yarborough led all 500 laps,Lapped the field,and won at Bristol in 1973
But that would only equate to about 260 miles.
Yet again, more history I'm not bothered about, yet YOU had me hooked until the end !

This was the first coke 600 I saw in person, so i didnt spend the entire time in my seat as I took my time walking around and watching parts of the race from different vantage points, but everytime i looked at the leaderboard he was on top by a large margin. Reminded me of another dominant performance from Charlotte, the 1993 fall race where Ernie Irvan led 328 of 334 laps to take the win.
I know you're more than likely a Clemson or South Carolina fan, but I think you should do a video on the 2013 Iron Bowl between Auburn and Alabama or the Kick Six. That game needs a compelling and great story that only you can tell. I think it would make a great video and attract another audience in collegiate sports. I know an Auburn fan like myself would watch it. Keep up the Great and Awesome work!

Okay, I LOVED this race. I love blowouts. My idea of clock management in football or something like that is continuously scoring points until the clock reads all zeroes (seriously; I'm annoyed that no one has topped 221-0 in college football yet). I watched every lap of this race, and I love watching highlights of it at different points. So here's hoping that I see another race similar to this one.
Just want to thank you again, Slap. I hold no endearment for modern NASCAR, but this was an interesting modern record.

Race I went to in person, the Coca-Cola 600 in 1996, Dale Jarrett stomped the field something awful. Last 200 or so miles ran caution free and Jarrett led all the laps except for when he pitted. He ended up winning by about 14 seconds. Since I was at the track didn't get to hear what they were saying on TV, but it was the most dominant performance I've seen. But that's only half the length of what Truex did, cause Jarrett's car wasn't the beast in the sunlight it became later when the sun went down, so Truex's feat is more impressive. You might say races like these are boring, but you got to admire when someone is just that good.
Truex is my favourite NASCAR driver, as a new fan I just love his story and this is part of it

You know you would think that a guy that owned a mattress company in Colorado who suddenly got into NASCAR would be on the Liars, Thieves, and Lawyers series but no. He was in the sport for a long time and ended up winning a championship. I’ve been an MTJ fan since 2016 and I’ll always remember him for running that all black paint scheme. It was basic but nice at the same time. Also funny enough Charlotte Motor Speedway is my home track and I went to the 2019 race which MTJ won and it’s the first time a driver I have pulled for won a race that I was in attendance for…it was an awesome night.
I neither watched nor attended this Coke 600, but was pretty hyped when I later heard about Truex's accomplishment. Also, I agree. Domination sucks, unless it's your driver. I attended the 2017 Fall Richmond race. Ultimately Truex did not win thanks to Derrike Cope bringing out an untimely caution. But he spent much of the day in front. The lack of variety in leaders didn't bother me. I enjoyed watching Martin go round and round again. It was just satisfying. Thanks for the video!

This race was actually pretty satisfying to watch live as there were only 4 cautions and plenty of green flag racing. I remember rooting for Jimmie Johnson to see if he could pull off the upset, who led 334/400 laps in 2004. Interesting enough, Kyle Busch also led 377/400 laps only 2 years later.
