It's fascinating to me to see how differently the same kata is portrayed across various styles.

  • @drewochsner6027

In the original Okinawan karate styles, the primary goal of the martial art was the defense of one's life. Every technique or series of techniques in a kata was designed to be able take the life of an attacker. The bunkai is hidden, but is filled with applications of "Ti" (their extremely effective indigenous grappling art) and utilizes kyusho to strike or manipulate vital points. Not only are their techniqes leathal, but they develop iron bodies through years of conditioning and kiko (qigong).

Keyboard warriors. In my experience you can practice your Kata to perfection then on the day the matts and the crowd take it out of you. That little leg wobble you didn't count on, then your out. It's harder to do in real life.

In my opinion it would be wise for a martial artist student to essay katas from different Karate styles. Even some Saolin forms with small grade of difficulty are accessible e.g. Wu He, Wu Xing Shi Liu Fa, Rou, Qi Xing, ... ( the most of them are forbidden for a practitioner who hasn't got the skills of a gymnastics athlete ). I have essayed all Shotokan katas, continued with the Assai-Ryu system and recently I 've discovered Goju-Ryu, I love them all!

Do you know I've been learning this kata for a few weeks and always thought my Sensei was calling it Sanchin, and I was so confused why I couldn't find the same version we were doing on UA-cam. Then I remembered this is the kata that is taught in one of the karate kid movies so searched based on that and low and behold I've found the correct kata.

Indeed, karate is a much more subjective and individualized experience than some may realize or admit, particularly at the advanced levels. A good look into the history of karate will reveal that change is as much a part of karate as is tradition. I wouldn't dare assume to know everything about it, as I am still learning myself. Osu.

@Mathias Lindahl I'm afraid you miss the whole concept of Karate, it's not just about bashing the he'll out of someone in a ring, kata is just a beautiful expression of an art form captured in each technique allowing the practitioner to be in the present moment, raising awareness and spirituality. I wouldn't expect Neanderthals such as you to appreciate such a sophisticated and ancient art. It takes years of hard patience and practice to master, and before you say it I was a boxer long ago, but

I think you are right. But not for affirming that someone who practices karate must have one sensei only. I did have several senseis, because I had no choice. And I think that this has made me be who I am today. I have still lots, lots to learn about karate, but isn't that the case for all of us ? I mean, we never finish learning. With all of my senseis, I discovered new things, new notions, and now I am glad to be able to restitue it in my dojo.

Correct me if I am wrong. Different styles have similar kata with variation of the style (for example Heian katas from Shotokan and Pinan katas from Kyokushin), for this case this is called SEIENCHIN: she is performing in Shitoryu style, I believe. SEIYUNCHIN is the Goju-ryu variation, which has more pulling-locking hand techniques. Anyway they all come from one root 征引鎮. Anybody has better knowledge please correct / share, thank you.

  • @KenpoKid77

I think he was referring to the spelling/pronunciation of the name. The kata itself tends to be similar in technique across different karate styles that have it in their syllabus (Kyokushin, Shito, Goju, etc.) The pronunciation, however, is different for the Japanese and the Okinwan. The Okinawan dialect and certain parts of speech doesn't mesh well with the Japanese toungue at times (not all the time), so Japanese speakers come up with an equivalent that suits them.

As you no doubt know, many of the Japanese names (other languages too) are open to differing phonetic solutions. That's probably what's happened here. For what it's worth Seiyunchin seems to offer a better way of saying it. To me Seienchin could be pronounced to sound like Sanchin, which is of course a totally different kata. In my opinion it's best to avoid such confusion.

I understand what you are saying that someone should have only one sensai, and I agree. But sometimes you have no choice. For example, my teacher of 12 years had to leave to take care of his sick mother in law and I ended up taking Chinese Kung Fu because it was the only school around with a top notch instructor, all the others I found were lacking in quality. I'm just saying sometimes events happen beyond your control. You are right though, that boxer guy does have a simple mind.

I guess that REAL fighting is when you fight with wrapped hands, big puffy gloves, tooth-protection, only allowed to attack specific areas above the waist with hands only, with a judge that have your back if you get your ass kicked, 3 more judges counting points and so on...
The majority of boxers would end with broken hands and wrists if they fought without wrapping their hands and the big gloves.I still believe that boxers are the best fighters (hands only), but it's far from real fighting.

To some degree, one COULD say that you are correct. To someone who is absorbed with fighting and competitive martial arts, all kata would be nonsense. Also, no disrespect intended to any Japanese karateka, but Gichin Funakoshi did not teach real karate (tuidi) bunkai to the Japanese; he taught katas as exercises. Most of the katas have been changed and only superficial bunkai is taught in Japanese karate, generally speaking anyway. True Okinawan karate is VASTLY different that Japanese karate.

If you have studied karate for as long as you say you have, you wouldve realized that pretty much every technique is designed to create as much hurt as it can
