I kept my iPhone 6 as a backup when I bought an XR. When the 6 stopped getting software updates I bought an SE-2 as the backup. It was fine, almost exactly like the 6. I upgraded to the iPhone 13 and decided the SE 2020 was no longer a good backup. I traded it for the 13 Mini. This is a great phone. Apple should use the Mini platform for the next SE.

I still remember watching iPhone X launch event and being amazed when they showed the gesture navigation. I had an S8+ at the time and always felt like there was something wrong with having software buttons for navigation because it takes away that full screen experience that they were going for. I didn’t like the notch but gestures were definitely my favorite thing about the iPhone X redesign.

My 80yr old dad got suckered into upgrading his iPhone 6s to an iPhone 13 at the store. He couldn’t figure out gestures at all no matter how much I taught him. I just traded my 8+ for his 13. He’s happy now as it all seems familiar to him. But this just goes to show that apple should keep making iPhones with home buttons for the older generation that can’t move on from it.

My SE2 is what finally sucked me down the Apple ecosystem rabbit hole.😅 As a ardent Android fanboy since my first Motorola G1 I fought the good fight until I broke the screen on my Pixel 6 and couldn't stomach the screen replacement cost. Got the SE2 for free on a signup deal then switched over to Mint. That was last August and since then I have added a Mac Mini M1 (refurbished for $499), and iPad Pro 2018 and next up is coming a new Apple TV🤪

I went for a SE 2020 because I wanted a phone that was not so big so that it easier to hold in the hand (my hands are not that big) and it is easier to put in your pocket. At the time I bought it, its price was a little more than half the price of the iPhone 12 mini and for my usage it looked like the 12 did not bring much more to the table.
2.5 years later I do notice that I need to charge it a bit more often, but as long I don’t forget to do that whenever I’m out for a whole day without a charger there’s not really an issue. I just should only use it then when it’s needed and not to kill time with it. And then the battery could still be 40% at the end of the day (or higher if I used it less on average).

I switched my android tablet to gesture control. It has the option to just have an on screen home button at the bottom of the screen. I am so used to my iPhone and adjuster controls but I decided I wanted it on my android tablet. My Samsung tab S8 Plus has an option for gesture, controls, built-in, and it makes it very similar to using the iPhone gesture controls. It makes switching back-and-forth between my iPhone and my tablet noticeably more seamless, especially considering that they are totally separate operating systems. I just like having the same control on my touchscreen devices. also, I really appreciate the fact that Samsung gives us the option to have iPhone like gesture controls on any Samsung phone or traditional android controls with the back button and the multitasking button, and the home button, which are of course, on screen buttons now, but I like the option. I am more of an Apple person, so being able to use my android devices in a manner that is incredibly similar to how are use my iPhone or my iPad is very much appreciated.

  • @Alex-hv3ir
    @Alex-hv3ir Рік тому +3

As an SE 2 user (since it came out, to this day) I definitely agree with Drew here.
The display is both the best and worst part of the phone, it’s 16:9, which makes recording videos very pleasing to do, the same thing goes for watching videos, as you never need to pinch to zoom as the video fits the display 95% of the times.
Performance is not really an issue yet.
Battery life is… bad. With a new battery it’s almost decent, but with a 77% like me or drew, it’s pretty bad.
Camera is totally ok, unfortunately it doesn’t have night mode.
The biggest problem for me, is the cramped display tho, it’s tiny and with such big bezels, it not only looks pretty dated, but it’s almost uncomfortable.
Another bug issue are the (lack of) gestures, which makes the device _feel_ slow.

I feel like one of the only reasons to own an SE3 aside from “5G” is if you like the perfectly rectangular screen and would want to use it for as long as possible with updates to it for as long as possible. So really from about 2026 to 2028 it will hold true that the SE3 will be the last and only rectangular screened iPhone that is supported by the newest iOS. There are pros and cons to the SE 2 compared to the gesture based newer iPhones. Touch ID is amazing and I prefer it to Face ID. Then ironic you mentioned the flashlight on the lock screen as I hate that and the camera icons on the lock screen as I've unintentionally activated them several times. I do agree the display is a bit outdated, but it works well which is why people love the SE lineup. The battery also could be better, but if you get a battery case, you can easily get 8-9 hours of screen on time which should last a day. With the display too, I find using the zoomed display helps me see it better. Then there's the price, finding one for $100-$160 makes this an excellent value considering it'll likely get 3-4 more years at least on support. Is it perfect? No, but when you get the same iOS experience for much less, it kind of balances the cons out. Though ultimately it comes down to your preferences. I wish they'd release an SE plus model with the same size but with a full screen and Touch ID on the power button to get rid of the bezels. If Apple did that and put in a bigger battery while keeping the price down it would be a best seller immediately.

I have been a regular user of IPhone SE 2020. My company gave it to me, and since there was lockdown and I wasn’t going out, I made it my primary phone.
I liked it. It was snappy and fast. Touch ID helped. The camera is underrated in my opinion. For a single lens phone cam, this still produces really good and sharp and natural looking photos. It’s comparable to iPhone 11’s. The absence of other lenses? Well, I wasn’t missing what I never had haha!
The battery though. Horrible and not acceptable by any means. For a first few months I could get by (plus being at home under lockdown helped). But the battery health plummeted rather quick. Sitting today at 82%.
The point is, it offered all the essentials and the basics without leaving me frustrated.
Only three months back, I upgraded to iPhone 14 (regular), making iPhone SE 2020 now my work phone.

The difference between the iPhone 12 mini and the iPhone 8 or iPhone SE is the shape of the display and how much longer the iPhone 12 and 12 mini are compared to that 16 x 9 aspect ratio. The extra real estate we get outside of the 16 x 9 aspect ratio area with the iPhone 13 really allows for a lot more Fluidity in the design of the software. Because you have that space it feels natural to have icons below or above. What would be the 16 x 9 aspect ratio space on the screen so when you go back to an iPhone 8 or an iPhone SE which only has the area of a 16 x 9 aspect ratio screen, it is going to feel cramped even though you may have had the iPhone 8 plus back in the day they gain it does it feel cramped and your iPhone 13+ might be the same size technically as the iPhone 8 plus but you have that larger screen, which takes up more surface area than the traditional 16 x 9 aspect ratio it’s also because modern versions of iOS are made for this newer type of screen and there’s newer shape of the screen and therefore you’re taking software and firmware that is built for a screen that is supposed to be longer than a 16 x 9 aspect ratio and basically shoving it up from the bottom and down from the top to fit into the 16 x 9 aspect ratio when it’s really supposed to fit in a screen that looks like the iPhone 13 or iPhone 14 or anything since the iPhone X so yeah you’re cramping in an iPhone X screen into a different aspect ratio

I very much prefer the bigger screens because they help me to make fewer typos while typing, I could never go for an SE, but if I did it would be the SE 3.
Why? The only difference is 5G, right?
Well, I’m sure you know it’s got a 2-year-newer chip and 33% more RAM. Those are significant features, but maybe not significant enough to spend an extra $50-100.
However, less often brought up, it’s got a ~10% larger battery capacity, the newer chip is more efficient and can last longer on that battery, and if you’re buying from a reseller that doesn’t replace batteries you’ll get much better battery health on a year-old phone than on a 3-year-old phone.
Anyway, as an aside, love that you advocate for people to buy phones that do what they need rather than always buying the phone with the biggest numbers on it. Yes, for a device that most people use multiple times every day, it can be worth it to spend a few extra hundred every several years to get the most out of your phone - but only it you’re actually gonna use those features. Why spend $200 more for an iPhone Pro if you can’t tell the difference in ProMotion, won’t be using the telephoto lens, and don’t care for the gimmick of the year that’ll be standard on the next one?

This made me think about all the rumors flying around about the whatever SE gen that could possibly come next and lots of them are like "the iPhone XR body" and i don't know if that's really wise... Like sure they are going to use an older design and that one makes sense but we already have an iPhone with a 6.1 inch display so idk, even though it won't have the same price for those who aren't into tech they won't see the difference beyond cameras possibly and few things here and there.
So it got me thinking, the smartest choice would be either choose the mini chassis OR the iPhone X chassis, they are somewhat small which is something that has always been on brand for the iPhone SE lineup. But who knows what they're coming up with. Sometimes i'd like to switch to a smaller phone because we do carry bricks with us😂

Apple/Steve Jobs established the kind of brand manipulation that would embed on (Apple)consumers thinking that for one "bigger screen is better" , and so on. But really, and realistically the SE is superior and what all users just need in their life. The pro are just used to give a sense of luxury but no real advantage. Having a pro does not make your life and work productivity better than what an SE can do.

  • @velvetrooster5569

To be fair to the peak performance versus battery health argument, Apple got a lot of flack for slowing down phones with lower battery health which for the majority is usually older phones that experienced it first and because Apple got a lot of flack for that which really was as Joe Rogan said a very dirty move on Apple‘s part, even if it was to preserve battery life like they said it was, or if it was with the people that actually believed to be planned obsolescence it was still very dirty for Apple to do that without telling people. So I think what we’re seeing here is that Apple has in the past few years, tried to slowly get away from that because of how sour it made iPhone and iPad users, especially those that were using older iPhones and older iPads for longer periods of time and allowing their phones to get down to that 90% or 80% or 70% battery health which in the older firmware is what caused the phones to slow down to supposedly as Apple said save battery life by lowering performance
