Darnold was named Vikes starter at the beginning of training camp - that's why he took all the 1st team reps, and got pulled along with the rest of the starters after one drive in pre-season. KOC and Kwesi were always going to take a cautious path with McCarthy, initially planning for him to be QB3 so he could focus on his fundamentals. It was only because of his stellar progress that they were considering making him QB2. Thank you Ahmed for finally sayin the Vikings WERE a good team last year. They had insanely bad fumble luck early and then not only lost their QB but had 10+ guys out at one point so people are overlooking how good of a team they actually were last year, but had a season derailed by awful luck. Despite that bad luck the first time they were playing Detroit they were still playing with a chance to win the division and should have beat Detroit but Nick Mullens had the ball slip out of his hand while he was unpressured and had JJ wide open for the win. Vikings very likely could have won the division last year without the absurdly bad injury luck. This offseason they improved across the board except QB was the wildcard. Turns out Darnold can ball when put in a situation that isn't awful. They have a top tier head coach and the best or second best DC in the league (either Flores or Spags). They improved their DL with key pickups and fixed their disastrous run game while keeping a strong OL and elite skill players.
