Great video, boss! This was truly a fantastic vid! I have been flying the P-40 a bit more as it is FINALLY fixed LOL!! however, i guess i haven't really been flying lately as I have been so freaking busy with midterms for university.... however, i'm now on spring break so i'm ready to start some events and kick some ass!!!
Hey guys, today we're taking a look at the reborn P-40E-1 Kittyhawk :) A plane that could be made the work but was very limited in its options, gaijin has seen fit to buff it to perfection though this patch, lets check what has changed ;) Hope you enjoy! if you did do like, comment and subscribe.
i agree with that to a certain extend. The fixing is nessesary, and a renewed p-40 almost feels like a new plane :) but a p-51H would have created a bit more enthusiasm for the air part of this patch. Not a single fighter added this patch was dissapointing for me, but i agree, the fixes are great, and nessesary :)
You inspire me, Jengar. I will take this out when I've had a cuppa, and get myself killed a few times, lol. But I may come away with a few kills myself if I can remember your tips while I panic my way thru! The trouble is, every experienced pilot out there will already know about it, and will be taking this thing out as quick as they can, I fear.
Haven't flown it yet, but I need to before everyone starts screaming for the BR to be raised a full point (rolls eyes). Personally, I considered the plane unflyable in its prior flight model. I'm glad to see that they've finally made this plane closer to its historic characteristics. In the Mediterranean, it did very well against 109E and 109F models for both RAF and USAAF pilots.
Thanks Jengar for taking out my favorite plane in War Thunder, glad you enjoyed it. Ever since the FM update, I am always thinking "wow I would have been dead there before the FM update" and am really enjoying it. Absolutely amazing aircraft intake and in real life.
I'm going to take my P40 out again after watching this. It's had so many flight model changes over the years that I want to take advantage before they change it again. I'm surprised we haven't been given more variants of the P40. It was such an important plane in WW2 that I would have thought Gaijan would have modelled a few more for us in game.
Now that I've spent some time in the new P-40, I'd like to pass on my observations. Firstly, the engine power curve received a huge boost resulting in excellent climb performance and acceleration. Average speed and speed after a dive are obviously positively affected as well. Its not as fast as an He-100 now, but its close. The other change is that the aircraft's handling and general stability have been fixed. Previously, as you all know, the plane was notoriously unstable at low speeds and had horrible stall characteristics and was near impossible to recover from a spin. It could enter what is known as a cross-control stall at low speeds (like 140 mph or less) when ever you applied rudder and aileron together. Just applying the rudder at low speeds could frequently cause the nose to gyrate wildly when you released it and the plane generally wallowed around the sky regardless of speed. Well, those flaws have either disappeared or been muted. General handling is improved and even satisfying in certain maneuvers. Damage model seems roughly the same. Ruggedly rugged. However, I do notice that the engine is a magnet for damage and the radiator and oil cooler will nearly always spring leaks if the nose is hit from just about any angle. The engine will continue to run for a few seconds after losing all the water or oil. This is historical. Many, many incidents where the Allison continue to provide full power til it seized after losing oil or water. Now for the bad news: 1) Horrible energy retention. This doesn't seem to have changed. In hard maneuvers, the P-40 will bleed ALL its energy in the first turn. It will be more stable, and thanks to its new found engine power, it can sustain hard maneuvering pretty much as long as you need it to, but you will be SLOW and unable to fight in the vertical once you've lost your energy. 2) Rudder wobble. Hasn't been fixed. To see this. Just make a 90 degree turn using your mouse aim. Just make the turn hard enough to make the wings roll about 60 degrees or more and then watch the rudder. You'll see it moving back and forth in large swings until you roll level. If you watch your reticle, you'll see it wobbling up and down in the turn. Now, imagine yourself trying to get an accurate shot at a target that is moving across your flight path and you roll your wings in his direction of travel to get better lead. Good luck. While this wobble doesn't make the P-40 unflyable it will definitely cost you some kills, cause you frustration, and makes the plane less effective. 3) 12.7mm/0.50 caliber nerfs. Its like having 6 x 7.62mm/0.30 calibers in the wings. Seriously...its like similar firepower to 6 light mgs. I have to spend about as much time on target to get a kill with the P-40 as I do with a Hurricane or Spitfire with 8 light mgs. The only advantage is range and you can score pilot and engine kills a bit easier. 4) While high-speed handling is definitely better, (wings continue to roll well upto 450 mph), control stiffening gets pretty bad on all but the ailerons past 325 mph. This makes BnZ attacks against maneuvering targets very difficult and effectively limits the altitude difference that you can exploit between you and your targets. The P-40 is still limited to shallow or low altitude BnZ attacks to be effective. 5) Previously, dogfighting was out of the question. Now you can finally take full advantage of that incredibly powerful rudder and turn inside people all day. So why am I listing this as a bad point? Well, because the energy bleed is so bad. You can dogfight, but you need to pick you enemies carefully. Make sure you can make it a one-on-one engagement and that you have some altitude to play with. Remember, you'll bleed off ALL you speed and vertical maneuvering is not possible without diving first. So you can dogfight now, but the conditions are limited. 6) As good as the P-40 is now, it is still out-classed by several contemporaries. The Ki-43, Ki-44, Ki-61, MC-202 are all superior in my opinion. A MiG-3-15 in the right hands is better. He-100 is dangerous. Even slower planes like the G-50 and MC-200 need to approached with care. My final thought, and I cannot emphasize this enough, is that the BR of 2.0 AB and 2.3 RB seem correct to me. This plane is good, but it still has some serious weaknesses. I've played it against higher BR's and its competitive at 2.3 with some care and skill, but definitely out-classed by 2.7 BR aircraft.
Thanks for your input julian, i agree on many points, though i think it isnt outclassed by all 2.7 br planes. some obvious ones, but others the p-40 can definitely take on. and with my flightstyle in the vertical, the engine power allows for a lot of regained energy.
Yup, feel really glad actually. Love your videos and I dont usually give likes and all that stuff cause im a lurker lol. But i felt like this one deserves it cause Its a great video , keep up the good work man c:
ty mate, hope you'll make more exeptions when it comes to liking video's. viewer engagement is an important factor in getting higher on the search results, and ultimately, for smaller channels to grow. So if you really like/enjoy channels do like and comment, it helps those channels a lot :)
Perfection is a strong word. It's engine overheat and high control stiffness at high speed compared to most aircraft in the game make sure that it isn't.
The thing is that in real life this was not that much of an issue since most of the flight time for any pilot in a P-40E would be cruissing around and most combat engagements lasted less than five minutes with a few protracted exceptions. In this game however all flights are commited to become an engagement and the fact that the airfields for both teams are so close to one another means that it pilots are forced to scramble for an advantegous position as quickly as possible (specially in RB due to the spotting mechanics and third person view increasing the awareness of players to levels well beyond the ones possible in real life conditions). Once the engagement does happen it can be pretty long due to the lack of coordination and the numerical parity between both teams, In this situation is a paramount to be able to run the engine at high power for long ammounts of time specially because the climbing and combat phase happen in quick sucession. As for control stiffness the P-40 series is know to have had heavy ailerons and rudder at high speeds, unfortunatelly this kind of limitations aren't often present on the other single engine fighters available in the game and it may take a long while until those flight models are corrected if they are corrected at all. Is worth noting that some newer FM's like the MC.202 do have similar limitations both in thermodinamics and high speed maneuvering.
the overheating is still manageble most of the time i feel, and the control stiffening isnt close to how bad it was. I really feel the plane is close to perfect as it is right now. Especially compared to the brick it used to be, its competative now.
Maybe a little downtiered even. Then again do to BR compression it can still face aircraft like the FW-190A-1 and Spitfire Mk V which if flwon properelly can be a handfull.
I liked to fly the P-40 even in previous patches but it was quite strict how the plane had to be flown. Now it seems to have become much more versatile which is a very nice thing. I haven't tried it yet but after seeing how much more agile it has become, I will definitely give it a go :)
That's great new's seeing that Aircraft can now live up to it's great reputation it had in WW2 and as a Aussie can wear it's colors proudly. Cheer's Jengar.
So meny skins so litle time :-) great video for great craft. Thanks gajzila for new FM now we can fly it with no felling of beeing a baby seal, now hawk is real hawk.
"oh look, p40e is over performing. must uptier to 2.7 to 3.0 xaxaxa)))" -Gaijin, anyways, yes p40 has improved from a flying brick to ultimate seal clubber
Sadly, as of this date, the performance has been nerfed backwards. Decent climb rate is gone and I don't think it handles as well either. On the plus side the 50's seem stronger.
I flew this in realistic tonight and had a different experience. It maneuvered like a cow. The right wing liked to drop; I struggled to keep the wings level. It was awful. I am not an experienced RB flyer.
I always considered it mediocre at best - to crap at worst. In my three plus years here, I have only taken it out a few times. I see however, sparking is still an issue with its guns. Which is enough to deter me from flying it. What's the point if all it is going to do is spark.
it does still spark aye, but the plane is such a joy to fly now it makes up for it. Plz do try it, you'll find renewed love for it. It's a different plane now, despite the occational spark.
P40 is a good plane now but that YAK-1B pilot missed a lot of chances to take you out. 1B is still the superior aircraft to the P40 and pretty much anything @ its BR assuming you begin with an equal or higher energy state.
i know, first of all i was very surprised that he could hold with me :p i actually lost the fight after i underestimated his enrgy right at the beginning (dropped throttle in the vertical for a sec -> stalled myself out too early) :/ ... and i chocked the shot when i had it
the point is not wether the p-40 is better then the yak-1b, but that it can compete with it, instead of being the sitting duck it used to be. And that i feel is great.
Thanks Kiwi, much appreciated! I'll have to give it a fly out... Any thoughts on the Sea Fury in game Vs actual? Is that FM getting more realistic yet?
its very good aye, but it seems fine at 2.3, there's a lot of good planes in that br range. I'd love to see the sea fury in its realistic state ;) although i havnt flown it yet this patch, dont know if they did anything.
Try getting 250m convergence once with this plane, not recommended for folks with bad internet connection or against biplane/bomber. (H6k defense gunner has triple the range and biplane will crash into you). Also Sunderland seems to laugh at my pathetic MG.
But that isn't historically accurate, is it? The .50cals had some of the best ballistics and range among the common WW2 fighter armaments, and they should not lose any effectiveness versus airplanes when going from 200 meters to 800 meters. Even out to 1km, a .50cal round will absolutely shred a lightly armored target, destroy and engine or turn a pilot into dog meat.
No, please, enough with this nonsense about the "exploding" 20mm shells, as if they were little bombs. They weren't. They didn't have that much explosive, and they had unsophisticated fuses. But the biggest point is that they were less likely to hit in the first place! They had worse range, worse accuracy, worse ballistics and worse fire rate. The odds of at least some strikes with 6 (or 8) .50cals were MUCH higher than the odds of multiple strikes with a single or pair of 20mm cannons. Plus the .50cal planes could shoot longer/more bursts, due to vastly superior ammo count. The .50cal was the superior overall armament against fighters, just deal with it. And specifically about the kinetic energy and penetrating potential of the .50cals, that is all very well documented. With the exception of specific armor plates, there was nothing on any fighter that could stop a .50cal round at any reasonable range (out beyond 1km). And any .50cal round that managed to enter a cockpit and strike a pilot was going to be devastating to that pilot.
if were taking pure ballistics and KPE into account wouldnt the 15mm MG on the german fighters be superior then, it also has the capacity to load cermet rounds to further its ballistics
How can anyone watch this video at 2:15 and honestly say that the .50cals aren't completely broken? I mean, look at that! He is landing repeated bursts all over the plane, from multiple angles of attack, all at close range. And this is 6 guns, 3 in each wing, so no matter what you have multiple streams of bullets landing all over a 109 (a compact plane without a lot of "empty space"). That plane should be a heaping mess, and the pilot should look like dog food. This game is completely broken right now.
It'sweird with the 50 cals, sometimes you get moments like you pointed out, and at other times they rip a plane to pieces, although its often also pilot snipes and fires ;) they arnt consistent atm.
Yes, sometimes they work well, and sometimes you get a lot of pilot snipes when using Universal (which I prefer), but it doesn't excuse those times when you nail a plane with repeated bursts and get nothing. In your video you go from 600 plus rounds to empty, scoring a lot of hits with solid, close range bursts, and he just flies away. That's ridiculous and it ruins the game because you end up wasting all of your energy to put a target down, meanwhile a Russian plane with two MG's will just casually snap shot you.
Hey, if you can do that, more power to you... But I think most people go a little insane when they land multiple solid bursts on an opponent, with no effect, and then have their wings instantly blown off by a single cannon round.
Was playing it a while last night feels like it's back to pre-boost spec. Not the compressibility but the sluggishness and poor gun effect. Could just be me though.
it's 2018 and it is overheat. It's not an engine, it's a stove. It overheats at 80% power. MEC barely helps it but is necessary. Piece of crap. Did not help it throws me into Bf109 F-4 (no, not f-1, I checked replay).
The plane is great, too bad american teams are the worst in game. I laugh every time I fly this, half the team has them, and what do they do? they never bother to climb above 1500 meters and start turnfighting hurricanes and I-16s. Idiots. Within 5 minutes its me vs the entire enemy team.
Yeah that was one of the best dogfights i had in quite some time :D
You were awesome!
thank you :)
Well done. One of the best I've watched as well
and you had a good shot there as well, only because you missed that could i eventually get the killing shot.

in my mind i think that the p-40 is probaly my favorite curtiss plane, superb video jengar love your videos thanks m8.
Thanks Axel! o7
Awesome Dogfight vs. the Yak.....very good patience!
Thank you mate, was fun indeed, was great to notice the p-40 could compete instead of being a sitting duck :)
I just started to play RB like 2 days ago and I wanted to try the P-40..and it's amazig. My favorite plane so far
you picked the right moment for it ;) it used to be very limited plane.
Yeah. To me it was kinda hard to fly even in arcade...now is really smooth at turning and it feels so good to be able to fight against a 109
definitely :) plane feels very good now, its great to finally experience that in the p-40.
I am realy happy about tgat new FM. Fantastic flying with that yak-1b.
Cheers 😎
np mate, i felt like discovering a new plane ;)
Nice flying i will have to get mine back out again and dust it off :)
i'll second that one :)
Perfection is a strong word. It's engine overheat and high control stiffness at high speed compared to most aircraft in the game make sure that it isn't.

Maybe a little downtiered even. Then again do to BR compression it can still face aircraft like the FW-190A-1 and Spitfire Mk V which if flwon properelly can be a handfull.
true, its alright for now, we'll have to see what gaijin does with the br in the long run.
Great call! I LOVE this plane but I've always been pissed off with it's model... Now? Great heads - up Jengar, thanks!!
np mate, enjoy it! ;)
I liked to fly the P-40 even in previous patches but it was quite strict how the plane had to be flown. Now it seems to have become much more versatile which is a very nice thing. I haven't tried it yet but after seeing how much more agile it has become, I will definitely give it a go :)
you should, especially since you were already enjoying it.
Love that P 40! Nice vid.
Thank you sir, and indeed its very lovable now ;)
That's great new's seeing that Aircraft can now live up to it's great reputation it had in WW2 and as a Aussie can wear it's colors proudly. Cheer's Jengar.
Np dan, the plane is competative now, finally :)
So meny skins so litle time :-) great video for great craft. Thanks gajzila for new FM now we can fly it with no felling of beeing a baby seal, now hawk is real hawk.
the plane with the most skins isnt it? and its indeed a beast now :)
"oh look, p40e is over performing. must uptier to 2.7 to 3.0 xaxaxa)))" -Gaijin, anyways, yes p40 has improved from a flying brick to ultimate seal clubber
f1 is good too, but you should really try the p-40 in its new form, its a competitor now for the ultimate sealclubber title ;)
It did take 1.5 years to fix? About time for us american pilots. GG Jengar.
Cheers mate, they took their time indeed ;) but the results are great :)
This is my favorite american fighter aling with the p47d28
This can basically be a 109 without the climb rate
gotta love the p-40's :)
Second tier BRRRRRRRT. I can manage to kill basically anything in a few seconds with this thing.
the kittyhawk is quite nice indeed!
112th raf my favorite camo on this
nice vid
Thanks marc :)
Nice to see the P-40 gets the love it deserves. Too bad the FM in arcade is still broken and using rudder gets you to flat spin easy.
yeah, it was about time too :)
awesomesauce.
it is indeed :D
My question. Is the P-40 now more or less accurate compared to its real life counterpart?
more.
omg jengar its realy working i cant belive it wow
aye, its a great plne now ;) finally hehe
yea I have researched 18000 points soo :P
getting close :)
Sadly, as of this date, the performance has been nerfed backwards. Decent climb rate is gone and I don't think it handles as well either. On the plus side the 50's seem stronger.
It's fun in arcade, too, though the controls stiffen badly at about 550 kph.
can imagine the fun in ab as well :)
I flew this in realistic tonight and had a different experience. It maneuvered like a cow. The right wing liked to drop; I struggled to keep the wings level. It was awful. I am not an experienced RB flyer.
i didnt have any of these problems when i flew it.

Make a video about Italians please
which one? ;)
P40 is a good plane now but that YAK-1B pilot missed a lot of chances to take you out. 1B is still the superior aircraft to the P40 and pretty much anything @ its BR assuming you begin with an equal or higher energy state.

i actually lost the fight after i underestimated his enrgy right at the beginning (dropped throttle in the vertical for a sec -> stalled myself out too early) :/
... and i chocked the shot when i had it
hmm the P-40 used to outturn the yak BEFORE the patch so ... no
the point is not wether the p-40 is better then the yak-1b, but that it can compete with it, instead of being the sitting duck it used to be. And that i feel is great.
really it wasnt that bad before
its much better now though, then it was before, and has become much more versitile.
Whats the best plane with the best energy retention?
the space shuttle.
Seems like this plane may be a little TOO buff?
Thanks Kiwi, much appreciated! I'll have to give it a fly out...
Any thoughts on the Sea Fury in game Vs actual? Is that FM getting more realistic yet?
its very good aye, but it seems fine at 2.3, there's a lot of good planes in that br range. I'd love to see the sea fury in its realistic state ;) although i havnt flown it yet this patch, dont know if they did anything.
could you show the rewards if the first games ?
i already deleted the original files unfortunately ;)
ace maker no problem 2 years later...... def needs a br change
Oh man that early MG belt is bad, so many sparks.
true that, despite that, notice the amount of pilot snipes ;)
That's ridiculous and it ruins the game because you end up wasting all of your energy to put a target down, meanwhile a Russian plane with two MG's will just casually snap shot you.
i dont make it that big personally, it ruins that moment for me, after that i shrug it off and i continue to have fun.
Hey, if you can do that, more power to you...
But I think most people go a little insane when they land multiple solid bursts on an opponent, with no effect, and then have their wings instantly blown off by a single cannon round.
Fair enough, maybe thats because im probably older then most ppl playing this game ;)
Did they nerf it again?
i dont know mate, i didnt see any patchnotes on it. But anything is possible, they tweak things without notes sometimes.
Was playing it a while last night feels like it's back to pre-boost spec. Not the compressibility but the sluggishness and poor gun effect. Could just be me though.
the 50 cals were tweaked back i feel, that is an experience i've had as well :)
it's 2018 and it is overheat. It's not an engine, it's a stove.
It overheats at 80% power.
MEC barely helps it but is necessary.
Piece of crap. Did not help it throws me into Bf109 F-4 (no, not f-1, I checked replay).
even with the overheating it can still be good with sideclimbing.
LEL, by the time you side climb all your team is dead and match is over.
not in my experience. sometime, sure. But most of the time you can make the difference, at least i can.
Rekting Russians in Berlin be like.
always fun ;)
How do you fight against yaks in p47s and p51ds tho? They always outmaneuver me.
check my p-51d and p-47 vids, plenty of tips there, and often fighting soviets :)
It's kinda weird that the Americans and the British are fighting the Russians most of time. They should be fighting the Germans.
true that :)
The plane is great, too bad american teams are the worst in game. I laugh every time I fly this, half the team has them, and what do they do? they never bother to climb above 1500 meters and start turnfighting hurricanes and I-16s. Idiots. Within 5 minutes its me vs the entire enemy team.
very true sir! common problem for the US teams unfortunately.
