Eureka Seven is a great show, no denying that, but mecha is IMO one of the strongest anime genres there is in terms of sheer narrative quality. So many great shows are mecha anime. Compare that to battle shounen where around 80% of them boil down to "read the manga instead", or romcoms that are written just because fanservice sells. No such thing with mecha - even during the mecha boom of the 70s and 80s the narrative quality was at least 2-3 levels above current day anime.
This was my first exposure to mecha anime, and anime in general. I then went on to watch basically every mecha show I could find. In my opinion, mecha shows that hold up/are as good as E7 are: Code Geass (R1 and R2), First Gundam and Zeta Gundam and Turn A Gundam, Gurren Lagann (and the movies Gurren-Hen and Lagann-Hen), Patlabor, Getter Robo, and Mazinger.
I think they tried to go all Macross with it: new mecha, new love story, new girls with pastel hair (who were idols too?), but they didn't even respect the message behind the original, and yeah they tarnished a legacy.

Every couple of years I come back to eureka seven. It’s a shame the sequel wasn’t that good
