    His career trajectory likely would have been much better if he’d just stayed with Everton U18s, he would have been playing infront of coaches and youth scouts of some of the top teams in the country and at the very least championship/League 1 and 2, and he would have been earning more in Everton’s academy to help him focus on football.

    • @ddlee84
      @ddlee84 6 місяців тому +26

      It could have been a better trajectory to stay at Everton thats true....but one of the problems with being a young goalkeeper is that playing against kids your same age all the time you don't get used to the rough and tumple aspects of the position. Playing lower league football against men is a great way of getting stronger and if Everton were not going to let him go out on loan to do this then he probably made the right move. He can play lower league for 3 years still be 20 and then try out for higher league teams. Plus if he looks after himself he can easily play till he is 40 if good enough so he still has 23 years(if lucky) to get to the promised land of Premier League Goalkeeper.

      @@raysteal3and that's without taking agents into account, most of whom wouldn't think twice about a goalkeeper in step 9. There's so much against you when you drop into the depths of non-league, players can really be lost in the mire. Staying at Everton into his early twenties would have given teams an impetus to sign him even if it meant dropping down into non league later.

    That's a load of shit. I played for united under 17s at 15 and went straight into the Rochdale first team squad as a 16 year old when they were in league 2. There's no way anyone at Everton under 18s needs to drop that far down the leagues to get a game. He'd be on 125 quid a game MAX at that level. I know because I played conference North after Rochdale to pay myself through uni and I was on 175 quid a game

      True, but, with Goalkeepers it’s quite easy to stand out and make the step up… it’s probably the only position you can really. As a striker they’ll always say you were against shit defences, as a defender they’ll say you were against shit strikers and with midfielders they’ll always question technique … but with goalkeepers that doesn’t seem to really happen. If you’re 18/19 in the National League like he is now with Aldershot, and he has a good season, plenty of clean sheets and good performances then a League 2 team will take a gamble, then a League 1 etc.

He played like shite and conceded 22 goals on 12 appearances with only 1 clean sheet. He was promptly cut and was without team for the entire following season as no other team wanted to sign him. Everton never offered him a salary… After a year of nothing, he decided to play division 8 football, which is where he finds himself now, after being transferred for free from Whitley Bay to Farnham Town. @@LocationFootball It will, but it does seem an unnecessary risk. Very few players actually work their way up from non-league to Premier League/Championship level.
      At Everton, he would have been getting elite level coaching and game time with the U-18s/23s this season (where a young keeper's inevitable mistakes are mostly overlooked provided they show talent and progression), probably a loan move to a League 1/2 level side next season or the one after should he develop well, as well as a nice salary (which is important as many teenage footballers develop chronic injury issues which force them to leave football altogether).
      There is both a clear developmental pathway and a safety net coming through a PL/Championship academy. Non-league is the wild west. It's admirable I guess, but first team football shouldn't be a priority at 17, especially when you have to drop down to a level that's probably lower than his u-23 side to find it

Yeah, but their competition are at the same level as them. Arguably the big 6 and maybe add in Newcastle and Villa are like a full step or two above their other league competition, so why haven't they done it? Or What about Celtic and Rangers? Especially Celtic when Rangers were sent back to the lower leagues, arguably the only other real competition in the SPL is between those two. Yet none of these teams could do it. Respect to the lad for wanting to play men's football. He'd already come from Reading's academy and Fleetwood U18s to get to Everton. When they wouldn't loan him out he had the guts to tell them to go pound sand and get experience playing the men's game instead of against children for another year or more.
    People think about the opportunity but these top clubs dump like 95% of the kids they bring in to their academies by the wayside and a lot will end up dropping way down like he did anyway, he just got a head start so he's not playing that level at 20 years old. I don't doubt that he will end up at a higher level than this and the experience of playing first team football will help him.

    Some negative stuff about his decision to leave Everton. Rather assumes he wants a one-dimensional career as a footballer. A few years back Cambridge United had 3 regular players in the first team with Cambridge degrees.
    He’s still a kid let him make his choices. Let’s face it too many don’t get contracts and by the time they find out no one wants them they have very few qualifications. Clubs to be fair do look to have education plans side by side with training, and work hard to find players new clubs.
