I was at this concert. Man they just smoked! No one can replace moon, but Kenny Jones is an awesome drummer. Many years later, I acquired a 1967 Lake Placid Blue Telecaster with a maple cap fretboard. Not sure the year of the Tele Townsend is playing but very close to what I own. He is a bit better at guitar than I am 😉.

@@alsaxe1 I actually revisited the video. You are right. At first glance it looked like my '67 Tele. Lake Placid blue with maple cap fingerboard (no skunk stripe) was sorta rare for that year. Cheers.

To me Kenny Jones totally replaced keith moon , who by the end of 77 was bloated and erratic, vastly ovrrrated judged by his antics not his once great drumming circa 70/72

There is no real "hate", just that the decision to bring Kenney in was so, so wrong. Sure, he was in a Mod band and they were all mates - so what? He wasn't chosen on what really mattered - his drumming.

05:27 It cannot be emphasized enough that with each windmill, Pete is striking the strings. His fingers BLEED profusely after concerts. It's so obvious when you see some dude like KISS' Paul Stanley windmill that he's not coming close to striking the strings. While an impressive stage gimmick, the windmilling was an essential part of the Who's sound on stage. Also, it's to my understanding that Pete - especially back then - had to use heaviest gauge strings that you can buy, and that sometimes in between using his telecaster and the Schecter his roadie would have to re-string his guitar. That's how much punishment he did to get his sound.

Kenny is definitely no Keith and Keith was no Kenny. Two different styles, but you must remember as the 80s approached so did the music change and Kenny's drumming fit in nicely with the new who songs. He is very solid and steady and like a watch. Pete and John had no issues just roger because he had moon the loom for over 13 years behind him and his character. Keith was good indeed but at times to busy for sure. Sorry roger in my opinion Kenny was more than fine.

Kenney was great and always will be. The Who as a band however, they were inevitably flexible compared to Kenney's usually straight beats, and I mean that in a good way. It did add a new twist, but it wasn't the same or as good as when they were with Keith. Nonetheless, it kept the band alive, having him there. I'm glad this stuff exists, I'd rather Kenney had joined as he did instead of the band just dying completely and nothing ever following. He was part of a path that the band took, I'm sure he's proud of it and he should be.

The evolution. They went from the most inefficient band in the world (destroying their gear) to perhaps the most efficient. Look up Alan Rogan's commentary on Pete's guitars. 1. Main guitar gets played. 2. Switch to capo guitar while first guitar is retuned. 3. Go back to 1st guitar while capo guitar is re-tuned to be the backup for 1st guitar. TWO SETS OF STRINGS PER NIGHT. Period.

This concert was a let down, as was the entire 1982 tour - by previous Who standards. This tour is best described as workman-like. Pete began the long journey of phoning in and teasing the audience with his performances that continues to today (although his Psychoderelict tour was eruptively brilliant).
These shows are very good for a normal rock band. But The Who always was more - an indescribable mix of melody, chaos, violence, delicacy and sheer power. Kenney Jones could fit in that The Who playing his version of Moonie as he showed during the outstanding, incandescent '79 Tour. But he could not make new sounds. And Pete checked out here.
The Who remain the greatest live band in rock history. Just not here.
