Out here in the Central Valley of CA we grow a lot of our own food but when I grow Sunflowers they are like my babies and I just hate the time when I have to cut them down and harvest. Peculiar? Yes...it is.

This year I planted a row of sunflowers along my fence. They’ve all been pollinated & a lot of birds and squirrels have been eating most of the seeds. I’m pretty happy with that because I wanted to pollinate the bees and help the birds and squirrels. I saved 4 heads and I’m going to save some for next year and eat the rest :)
Was looking for a recipe as I have a couple plants that are ready for seeding. Got to say this is one of the funnest cook videos I’ve seen. Love humor, music, and add ins. I turn the sunflower over and cut it like a pie into 4 pieces and then use my thumb to get the seeds off the head. I used a huge stainless steel bowl and it took little time to get all the seeds off
Us a stiff brush or use a power drill with a bush attachment. Also let the flower head dry out alot longer and the back totally gets dry and turns brown.

You likely may wish to wear light gardening gloves when handling the Sunflower heads. Will protect your fingers and palms from rough edges. The heads are prickly when green and especially so when dried.

For the taste test, try going to a park and getting people to give an opinion. Great jokes and delivery. I roast at 450 and use dry salad dressing mix.

So... not like pistachios at all lol. 2 very different things my friend. One is a nut, the other a seed.
I eat a bowlful every evening. It is very good if you suffer from acid reflux.
To open up the seeds, hold the wide end of the seed between your thumb and forefinger, the thinner end between an upper and lower tooth, pop it up with your teeth, remove the edible seed with your tongue and, there you go. It needs a bit of practice and when you get it you will not be able to stop eating. So addictive.

Heh. Was just looking for some instruction on how long/what temp to roast. Got some good laughs and might just have to try some old Bay sunflower seeds.
To make the removing the seeds easier, I rip the heads of the sunflower and create sections.. It gives you a starting point to kind of get at the seeds.

Try using some car tint on the windows in the she shed? I’ve never done it but it may help with the temperatures. Some insulation may help between the rafters too.

I ended up putting some textured glass on top that helps a little bit. Insulation is my next step!
Another backwoods tip is to just tape 1000 of them plastic toy magnifying glasses to your shed windows to increase drying efficiency.

I came for the same reason
First year I grew sunflowers but I eat them as a work snack almost everyday. I will try this but I don't have a shed but I have a great place to hang them to dry a bit, I hope it works!
