Daryl restores the 37mm ammo rack!
This WWII Grant Tank is part of the Australian Armour and Artillery Museum's restoration program.

It's a shame that after all Darryl's hard work, you can't tell it's been fixed. But then again, it's a testament to how well the work is done in that you can't tell someone has worked on it. There's wizardry going on here!
I used to do fabrication work on iron and it really takes a lot of experience to get it done correctly people it's not luck overall it's experience how to work metal to make it do what you need it to do to get the end result with it that's all it is about okay thanks Charles

i always say that an artefacts history never ends - its very being at the museum, the state it was in, the very people who work so hard to restore these items and what was done by who is just as important as those who once served in these machines
i used to restore aircraft only to static display, but the work that went on behind the scenes and the recording of it, documents as well as video and photographic evidence showed the detail gone into and any improvements that could be made in the future by future museum staff - when i began, none of the aircraft had the detail of stencils and mistakes could easily be made, locating jacking points for example, and set the benchmark very high from what was there previously

Coming to Oz in about three weeks and will try very hard to make to the Museum. My father was a tank commander in WWII in the US 2nd armored division in a M4 Sherman. You gentlemen are consummate artists. Every episode bring tears to my eyes, seeing the armor and remembering my Dad. Thank you beyond words.

In regards to filling the ammo box with ammunition, I am involved in the resto of a WW2 PT boat in Oregon USS PT658. We have a 37mm Autocannon that needed 39 rounds of ammo to fill the ammo belt for display purposes. Only having 2 real brass rounds/cartridges, we had some volunteers manufacture wooden dummies on a woodworking lathe using the real cartridges as a template. After being painted to look like "brass" and the projectile colors varied between HE and AP (Black and Green) they are now on display and appear very authentic. I think we coated them with epoxy clear coat as well. We like to say they pass the "10 foot rule", meaning that you cant tell the difference from 10 feet away! Just a thought in case you have trouble finding so many actual brass cartridges to populate your ammo racks inside of the Grant. PS you can see these on our website for PT658.

I binged watched the entire playlist for the grant this week, absolutely in awe of the skills the boys have and how much they can salvage from seemly destroyed parts. Incredible stuff!
Love to see him take the old part and appreciate what it means to stay original as possible, then add new metal and parts only where needed. A true craftsman.
Glad there was a steel door to protect the crew in case of an inadvertently hit into the ammo box.

It’s a damn good thing you were there Kurt; Darryl been workin so hard he, common mistake, put on the grinding mask instead of weld. I’m sure he would have figured it out before flash burning his retina’s but better to have your extra eyes; not to mention it proves how MUCH you’ve learned already by filming these!! MOST OF US are here to see the amazing fabrication and creation process of these priceless derelict antiques being brought back from the dead ABSOLUTELY IS THE MAIN REASON WE WATCH WORKSHOP WEDNESDAY. For you Kurt this must be INCREDIBLY BORING and VERY painstakingly and VERY TIMELY HARD footage to catch but YOU are making OUR view PART of THEIR EXPERIENCE we are being PART of the restoration thanks to YOU and that’s what most of us are here for. You have an EXTREMELY difficult job of filming the mundane to catch those few PRECIOUS moments of hours of work to a moment that lasts .02 seconds, you are our true viewing heroes cause without filming their lifetime of work goes UNNOTICED.

Fantastic work. I love how this team can sling around 3 inch thick slabs of steel and have the skills to restore a sheet metal cabinet to historic perfection. I love these workshop updates!
The fabrication videos always amaze me there is a video on UA-cam. I recently saw about the oldest Lee tank here in the states it’s located at a VFW hall in Delaware. Sure wish somebody would think about restoring it. This is my favorite tank of the second world war and I always feel it gets a bad rap. I also love the movie Sahara with Humphrey Bogart not only for the tank, but for the interaction of the soldiers thank you so much for restoring this one.
You see all these UA-cam channels of guys who fix cars - amateurs!! :) THESE GUYS build tanks by hand. Frikkin awesome.

I have used an adjustable wrench many times to straighten metal edges but if you use two of them then you can get rid of the small opposite type bends without having to use so much hammering. Good job with that old rust stuff!

For welding thin metal we used to use oxyacetylene brazing, much more control, and ease than arc welding.
Almost new this ammo closet, great job 👏
