How to load a Zorki 1, Leica II or Leica III with extended film leader

  • In this video I show you how I load my Zorki with a roll of Kodak Tmax 100. I show how to open the camera, cut the film, load the spool and wind to the first first.
    I also point out how to set the exposure counter, check the diaphragm, shutter speed, focussing and lens extension and lock.
    IMPORTANT:
    I erroneously say twice in the video "after you release the shutter, you can adjust the shutter speed". This is WRONG. I meant to say "after you cock the shutter by winding the film, you can adjust the shutter speed".
    I correct myself later on, but I just want to make sure nobody ruins their beautifull Zorki on my account. A real Leica doesn't have this problem, by the way. If you try to set the shutter speed on a Leica bottom loader without the shutter being cocked it will work, but the indents of the shutter speed will not correspond to the arrow on the camera body.

    Thank you for the video and information, needed to relearn a few things with my 1941 FED 1 camera. Now I am eager to see if I can get something on the film.

    Totally agree with trimming the film leader with scissors ....you will save on the bespoke `Ablon ` type trimmers....but I try and roughly copy the shape of the Ablon trim....ie : slight radius to all the cuts ....the 90 degree scissor cut is just looking to tear the film ..or scratch up the curtain .

    When setting the frame counter to "0", its probably helpful to turn it the "other way". That way, you won't inadvertantly turn the winding knob which is what happened here the first time you set it to zero; that is why it read incorrectly after you wound the film the rest of the way.

    Hello Koen, I have a question: is it possible to unload the film when the shutter is still cocked, ie do I have to shoot a final frame before rolling back the film, if the shutter is cocked?

    • @kalenderquantentunnel9411
      @kalenderquantentunnel9411 Рік тому

      You can unload the camera at virtually any time. Set the lever on top to R for rewind (rückspulen), keep in mind how many exposures you took. Rewind, take film out. Take a note on leader about number of exposed frames. At some later point in time reinsert film, put a lenscap on, advance the film to the number you wrote on the leader plus 2 exposures to get some distance and prevent double-exposures. Off you go to finish this roll.

    Beautiful camera

    Additional useful information: After you have inserted the film as shown correctly in the video, make sure that no sprockets of the film are visible when taking the first exposure. To do this, unmount the lens, set the exposure to "B" and keep the shutter released press while looking inside the camera from the front. The shutter curtain remains open and reveals how accurately the film sits - if sprockets are partially visible, reload the film by rewinding a bit first. At least the Leica IIIc has no mechanism to align the film correctly after the first exposure what later M-cameras do. If you see sprocket holes, the film will not be exposed in a fully centered frame on the film strip.

      Great trick! Looking through the lens mount is the best way to check for film alignment.

    Hey I have a Zorki 1 and noticed that there is no place for a strap without the case. I was wanting to see if someone could help be figure out aways to do this. I have a case but the leather is so old that its breaking. I was looking to get a new case but had not luck. I would appreciate it if anyone has a solution. Thanks.

      Ye, there's unfortunately no lugs from the factory. I have a guy who fixes my cameras and he drilled the case and added strap lugs. Pretty tryhard, but that's how you properly do it.
      I also have a zorkiy and it has strap lugs, but they were added back in the soviet days. Whoever did it knew what he was doing, couldn't distinguish it from a factory job.

    The music was too loud and took away from the video. I get you want some background noise so there’s no dead air, but it got in the way of understanding some of the finer points.

    도로 반품하길 잘 했구나.. 필름넣기 너무 어려워 2통 찢어먹어가면서 연습하다 안되서 결국 반품했는데.. 필름넣는것만 문제가 아니라 기본 사용도 어렵군요. Thank you for detail infomation.

    if you take two exposures before having the "real" one, do I then, if my roll is 24 exposures, have 22 left? or are those two exposures not counting

    • @koendelvaux
      @koendelvaux  7 років тому +7

      You will have 24 exposures left. The two first don't count. Film roll manufacturers allow for this when they calculate the length of their film. That being said: if you do it in the dark, you gain 2 exposures :)

    Dear Leica, please make a Digital IIIF, same size, no lcd, but Bluetooth, so you can see photos on your smartphone instead. The M9 and M10 are wonderful, but they are huge.

    • @kalenderquantentunnel9411
      @kalenderquantentunnel9411 Рік тому

      It is not as hard as it looks as you cut the film some time before you intend to load it and carry it precut. But as a daily shooter I also prefer M4-like loading which is as fast as it gets, even faster than with a hinged back.
