Owned a 95 Passat VR6 MT, loved the car. Was very spacious yet sporty, fun drivers car. Had a unique style like nothing else at the time. Dang I miss it!

He does lots of industry training and promotional videos. It's just a gig for an actor. He's gotta pay his bills too.

I had a 1996 Passat GLX, so this video is a blast from the past for me. What a lemon! I bought it new and took care of it, but after six months it came to a sudden stop in traffic with a dead battery and alternator. After that it was in the shop all the time, despite its "Made in West Germany" stamp and "German engineering." VWs only had a two-year warranty back then, and after that Volkswagen of America didn't want to hear about any issues with the car. The dashboard instrument panel had to be replaced (VW did cover part of the cost of that, but that was it), and the car had no end of electrical problems. A VW dealer told me that this was part of the VW ownership experience and that I couldn't expect the reliability of a Toyota or a Honda. When I traded it in after just three years, the Passat had become so unreliable that I wondered if it could make the two-mile drive to the Acura dealership where I traded it in. My Acura is still going strong all these years later. I liked the Passat's looks and handling, but the poor reliability was incredibly frustrating. I swore I'd never buy another VW or Audi. I can't remember the last time I saw one of these Passats on the road, so I don't think my experience was unusual.

+danatube I had a 1996 Passat Variant (station wagon) TDI, so this Video is a blast from the past for me. What a wonderful car! I bought it new, drove 446.000 km without any severe issue. This car was exceptionally spacious, economic (average 5,45 l/100 km) and powerful. I know a lot of friends, colleagues etc. with similar experiences. So I don't think my experience was unusual.

your experience is unusual, mine is going strong and even has bigger injectors and has been chipped. It runs like a pro, maybe the problem is you and not the car?

My wife still won't give hers up with over 610,000km. Drives that over her newer Jetta tdi. It's getting really hard to find body parts that aren't rusted to replace her rusted or deer damaged parts.

It’s 2018, and my 1996 Passat GLX wagon (manual) is still on the road. Best car I’ve ever owned. Of course, I’ve done a few upgrades...

I am a second owner of a 1992 b3 Passat Syncro g60. Using it as a daily, with a never opened for repairs engine, (2019), having 280.000 km, although chipped at ~190 hp from the beginning.
Electrics/electronics work perfectly without any major repairs. The car is maintained properly, having, still, the original alternator and water pump, ABS/EDL, electric windows motors/mechanisms/switches/ECU, engine ECU, distributor, dashboard, and the most of the original parts. Hydraulic steering pump, compressor g60, front wheel cv joints and one of the main shaft are changed, as well as, parts that are within the normal service range, 27 years after.
In other words, much more reliable than nowdays VWs and my most reliable car ever.
      The Syncro Heresy

I like the looks of the B4 Passat, but after owning a MK4 Golf for a year I'm not sure I'd like that interior. The B5 interior was a massive upgrade from the B4 and made this interior look outdated from the beginning.

Having driven both, I found the back seat of the B4 more comfortable - more headroom! The B5's virtual steering axis suspension is quite nice, but I've been impressed with the cared for B4's i've driven - quite comfortable and nice driving. The steering in them is also much better weighted than the Mk4.

Panasonic AG-1980? They are known for that problem among others. Nice deck, but about as "reliable" as a German car. Many older SVHS decks suffer from weird issues. Its quite annoying, but a re-cap usually fixes most of the electrical issues.
