      I live in the (very) High Sierra and I'm afraid... I agree with you. 💯 %. Why do thiests believe? Try looking to Russia's experiment with trying to stamp out religion. In 75 years of trying like mad ...using every argument known to man...the Marxists-Leninist-Stalinists couldn't come close to wiping out believers beliefs. Try as we may... we will probably never be able to achieve a 50% of the population conversion to reality. To a believer common sense leads them to spirits in the sky. To those of us who are products of the Age of Enlightenment or ...as merely products of our genes... common sense leads us to the truth. The obvious truth. But the same common sense will never offer an explanation for half the population opting for such an illogical conclusion when faced with the same basic facts.

    I suffer from the "second hand smoke" of religion, so to speak. Both my parents are atheists, but as a child, naturally I spent most of my time in school. During my formative years I was exposed to many poisoned minds, and as a result of religion always getting a pass, I acquired a fear of Hell that persists to this day. I'm ashamed of this, but it is what it is.

    • @DavidTheGnome69
      @DavidTheGnome69 10 років тому +3

      ghostofdayinperson But by that same logic you could say that I was force fed the "5 packs a day" of religion. It's a stupidly hyperbolic analogy on account of the fact that second hand smoke can do permanent and irreversible damage to a person's lungs, where as the concept of hell is a dumb horror story invented to make kids behave which does not coat your lungs with toxic substances. My point is that if you are so gripped with fear on account of an internally inconsistent and just plain bat shit crazy idea, maybe the idea isn't entirely to blame for that.

    I believe that one of the reasons for so many leaving the "fold" is the age of information. Never before has information been so easy to access. The internet has opened a whole new world for me anyway. Now if I have a question about the bible, all I have to do is to Google it. I found your program which has helped me tremendously! Information is power, and with this power comes open eyes.

    Indeed, there are and always have been many divisions within 'Christianity', I remember back when I used to be a believer, there were as many arguments among my fellow Christians as there were between them all and non-believers or people who professed other faiths not Christian base, I wouldn't say that these divisions alone were the reason for me eventually deciding to leave it altogether but they would have been no doubt one of the many factors that led me to eventually deciding that the whole thing was a load of complete nonsense, it was just the way that there seemed to be so much confusion over what the Bible meant in what it said and what Jesus meant in what he said etc that it became quite obvious that this mess and ambiguity was actually just a manifestation of the fact that it was a man made system of belief that I was following rather than one that came from a higher being, even though they try to hide it, you can tell that different preachers disagree with each other, for example, look at the way that Nathan Morris preaches and what he says compared with what Creflo Dollar teaches, they are wide apart and yet they're reading from the same Bible, Creflo says things that the preachers I used to know, who were more like Nathan would have fainted on hearing, no way would they have excepted Creflo's preaching as the real Gospel, he is basically telling people... 'it doesn't matter what you do.....you're still right with God because of Jesus's sacrifice...you just have to believe and receive and you'll be saved'....sounds great but what about all this other stuff Jesus was supposed to have said such as 'unless your righteousness exceeds the Pharisees and the Scribes you shall not get into the Kingdom of God' etc?, how does that fit into 'you're already right because of Jesus's sacrifice and all you have to do is believe' then?, I mean, I presume he died for the Pharisees too right?, so how are they then the bench mark by which we're all condemned if we fall short of it?
    This and many other things Jesus said is in total conflict with the 'Gospel according to Creflo' and others like him, the one thing that all these different Christians have in common is that they have all failed to meet the burden of proof for their claims so I have chosen not to believe any of them, same goes for all the other religions, ways of life or whatever they prefer to call their system of belief, they've still been so far unsuccessful in indisputably verifying any of their supernatural claims affiliated with their beliefs, sure I've heard some reasonably good arguments for them but the problem is that the nature of this is such that good arguments aren't enough, it's not like politics, this is something that is supposed to be on a higher level than the secular so the evidence needs to be on a higher level than the secular, supernatural claims must meet a supernatural standard of proof, show me for example the Christian who can feed five thousand people with two fishes and four loaves without the use of any kind of trickery, if Jesus of the Bible is real and he's really in Christians then they should be able to do all that and more, Fundamentalists are known to try some of the things Jesus mentioned would be signs such as drinking poison and lifting poisonous snakes without being harmed, bitten etc and they've been failing and causing a lot of danger and harm to themselves, people have died trying these things which actually only goes to tell me they're believing in something that doesn't work.

    Haven't been to a church service in years but when I see video of some of the "modern" services, I'm just amazed that some of these churches have so blatantly put themselves into the "entertainment" category. No wonder people leave, when they have new life experiences and are no longer entertained by this. I think the "positive message" and "personal relationship with Jesus" church stuff is also just a way to keep people hooked in. As DJT would tweet, "Sad!"

    I'm part Anatolian. I guess the best way to say it is like halfway between Greek and Turkish. It's Greek but the area is in Turkey and there's a lot of interbreeding. Anyway, my father is Anatolian and Jewish so I did grow up connected to the Greek Orthodox Church. It's very much pushed on you as a cultural obligation. You're supposed to be proud to be Greek and consider Greeks superior, they want you not to treat non-Greeks as well as you'd treat a Greek, etc. Oh, and racism is mandatory. You're supposed to HATE Turks. Anatolians are supposed to say we only have Turkish DNA because our ancestors were raped by Turks. Most of them could care less about the religious thing but the cultural deal was indoctrinated into them so it's like our version of Catholic guilt. If you don't get married in a Greek church using made up Greek names (yes, seriously) and baptize your kids you're a "self hating Greek." And you MUST love anything Greek. Did you think My Big Fat Greek Wedding was overrated and just mediocre? Too bad. You must pretend you LOVED it. Favorite movie of all time. It's just a whole bizarre thing.

    When we talk about "feeling" God? Isn't another feeling we can't explain "Love"? And if your really compare those two inside yourself? Isn't it very close, or even EXACTLY the same feeling? Personlly I've experienced both these "feelings" in different times while thinking God AND for another person, to the extreme point of my physical heart jumping out of my chest. Over my life, "Now" I don't confuse those definitions anymore, and I don't attribute Love to be some supernatural phenomena. It is simply the Love I experience to any degree for everything in this entire universe. My atheism now uncovers answers to serious physical dilemas, and I experience my heart jumping out of my chest all the time without fail. The knowledge one gains/uncovers over time gets exponentially greater as real questions get actual answers instead of settling for "magic did it". Life is wonderous and amazing, and I don't need a God to be the answer that stifles my yearning for knowledge and making life better and better day after day. Gr8! Peace ☮💜

    Closed Minded: Not open and unwilling to entertain new information. The person who has asserted the conclusion is the person who in no longer looking for an answer. This is the person who is closed minded. I am closed minded about the sun being hot. YOu will not convince me that it is cold, Of the religious who have it all figured out, "God done it." and the Atheists or scientists who admit, "we just don't know." who is obviously the more closed minded?

    • @luckymehehe5249
      @luckymehehe5249 6 років тому +1

      The sun being hot is demonstrable. Are gods observable, or demonstrable? Theism is a claim that something (a god) exists - is that claimed-yet-unproven existence observed and proven to be real? That is the question that theists need to answer honestly.

    • @christopher9000p
      @christopher9000p 8 років тому +7

      I struggled with that too until I realized the concept of hell fails on many levels. First, consider the idea of indoctrination: if you were never exposed to religion your entire life and someone were to approach you about it now, how convinced would you be? Probably not very. That's why you want to get people at a young age, while they're still impressionable AND you want to sell that bullshit hard with some hellfire and brimstone; of course you're going to accept it, especially if everyone within your sphere of influence--young and old alike--already accept it. Second, look at it from a scientific standpoint: how can ANY living person honestly claim to have knowledge of a place that only the dead can see? Also, is hell a spiritual place or a physical place? If it's a physical place then again, where's the evidence for it? It can't be "down there" as the religious claim, because we already know what's "down there", namely molten lava and that kind of thing. If it's a spiritual place then guess what? Fire is an actual PHYSICAL chemical reaction that requires heat, fuel and oxygen. Even if ghosts are real (just bear with me here), then if what we assume about them is correct, then casting one into a "lake of fire" won't burn it any more than spraying one with a hose would make it wet. Ghosts are supposedly incorporeal, devoid of any physical matter or nervous system, meaning fire likely wouldn't cause one any pain. Furthermore, would a "loving god" really send anyone to a hell for eternity as punishment for finite crimes? Why would an "all-knowing" god even create a being like satan, a being that would only cross him and get cast out? I could go on and on, but I think--I hope--that what I've left you with here at least gives you pause, and hopefully, some peace of mind. :)

    Ok, seriously...
    Parthenogenesis?
    I meen, I know what it meens... but I've studied biology! I bet, that nobody in my circle of friends (who hasn't studied with me) knows what this word meens, let alone just pulling it out of a heat in a conversation like that!
    And I know, many people here will now tell me how smart they are, and that they know it...
    But I think we really have to appriciate the fact, that these guys are extremly well educated, even in areas where it goes far beyond just "common knowledge".

      Freddy Scissorhands The thing is.. Simple things like not understanding a word are quite literally 5 minutes if not less, and a google search away from knowing what it means-- even broad scientific topics like Evolution. The fact of the matter is that some people don't need to know what Parthenogenesis, or Abiogenesis means to pretend to know pretend that it isn't true. There are people who come to argue for the "falsity" of Evolution without even having a 9th grader understand of what it actually means, and they don't want to know what it means, they don't care-- and they won't.

    "So even science can be child abuse"
    No. Teaching in a set way can be child abuse. 'What' you teach, in the case of science, is not the problem.
    'What' you teach in the case of religion is the problem, when teaching religion.
    The hosts... missed this. Though they rightly took it to pointing out important issues around this. Targeting the problems wherever they are. Pointing out that religion somehow gets a asinine free pass on bullshit. I agree with that stuff as well.

      Elr James I actually really enjoy this song, and have went and bought Bryan Steekma's stuff because of it. ANYONE who claims that music is anything less than good, has to provide musical theory into it - because otherwise it's all opinion. Being of an open mind I listen to most genres and like more than just one kind of music obviously. Having an "open mind" is kind of the whole point of their show, and if you hear the whole song it's really good.

      Shane Wilson btw, thats what wiki says: From a modern scientific perspective, the chicken came first because the genetic recombination that produced the first "chicken" (though that may be an arbitrary definition in a breeding population undergoing speciation) occurred in germ-line cells in a non-chicken ancestor
