Idle Speed Motor or Idle Speed Actuator adjustment procedure:
- With engine up to operating temperature, fully extend Idle Speed Motor and adjust screw until Engine is at 3,500 RPM.
2.5L TPS adjustment procedure:
- With throttle plate fully open, TPS output should read 93% of input voltage.
Hi Nick. Your channel and skills have helped me get through the work needed on my 2 xj's. I'm constantly checking your videos for tips when I need to get something done, that I've not done before on a Renix Jeep. Have a great 2018 !! Thanks brother !!
Thanks for putting out another video on your MJ ! Don't feel bad , I haven't figured out the method to the AMC madness either . Just go with it as the rest of us do . Always got me by.
G money sensors and grounding
Mi jeep comanche, tiene recientemente este problema, no mantiene la aceleración, intentaré esto en mi día de descanso, gracias!! Saludos desde ciudad Victoria, México.
The level of contempt in your voice for that engine is fucking gold my friend. Oh man that system is all sorts of ass backwards engineering.
Dude u safe my life thanka
F that top bolt, because F that top bolt. Whoever hasn't said that, has never worked on a car.
Might be the video, but that mechanical fan looks like it's shot 95%, it doesn't want to move. Good luck with the truck, love your XJ built!
Nah, brand new clutch, the rpm just happens to sync up with the camera to get that weird ghosting effect almost like a timing light.
NickInTimeFilms Oh I see, at least you got it started! love the 2.5L joke at the end, it applies to a lot of things jeep has made, aka rear leaf spring weld nuts.
OK I'm in the process of assembling mine and sure enough it was messed up. Thank you for your help. Although mine didnt require adjustment and I belive your screw didn't either. I noticed when I took mine apart the metal gear that rests on the motor's shaft with the flat side was rounded out while the shaft still had the flat side. I used the dread steel stick even though I hate jb weld and presto. When you get a second take yours back apart and I bet the gear is rounded off. The grease probably made it worse. Grease helps if the gear is snug with a flat side again.
I do like your muttley impression :-D, those bolts really pissed you off lol.
That unit does look well past it's sell by date by a few million years :-D, when it's pushing the throttle, all the worn teeth and shafts twist and create more friction.
Not supprising that it has trouble, "plastic fantastic" don't last forever :-(.
It's a clever design, when new i bet it was spot on.
nice job ! you getting pissed off keeps it real
If this were my 4 banger I'd rip all those finicky parts out and put a carburator on it. Cheers from Jacksonville Florida
Would love a video on how to clean that hole throttle body
So recent in the past 3 days I've had a tune up done to my truck. In one tune up I had my butterfly valve cleaned, air filter changed, new plugs, wires and distributor cap. Every since then my truck high revs when I crank it then idles back down. Then I take it for a drive, park it and the rpms go way up. Very very noticeable. This is a 4.0 straight 6. It never did any of this until the tune up
Was your TPS moved at all? It has to be properly adjusted on renix. Got a whole video on it
@@NickInTimeFilms that I do not know. It probably did get bumped or whatever in the cleaning process. I'm probably going to take it back and have it looked at again
Don’t crap talk the 2.5s! They’re awesome.
Lmao, maybe compared to walking, hahaha. I finally got this truck on the road and man is it a dog. Definitely a learning curve to not stalling this thing at every light. The only thing I can say about this thing is that sometimes I can just about see 20mpgs with it, haha.
@@NickInTimeFilms I’ve had my 88 2.5 for 25000 miles and haven’t had any issues. Maybe you got a lemin man. I’ve gotten very used to it’s little power. I have daily drivers for going places fast, for me it’s a fun car not a road trip you know.
It is fun for sure, i won't down play that. I just wish it had a little more getup before 3k.
Good movie!! Tell me more about the 'homemade' REM+ devices, the small black rectangle that displays many things especially idle speed. Thank you for the cool vid
Nice tutorial
Hey Nick love your videos have helped me with multiple XJ’s, and now I’m needing help with my YJ it has that exact set up the 2.5 TBI and I’m curious would the step motor and or the TPS cause my Jeep to run rough once warmed up, it runs great when cold, then once it warms up it bogs down when accelerating, if I let off the throttle slightly it starts to pick up again what do you think?
I have alot of blow by on a 88 yj 2.5 no oil on the plugs but building enough preasure to loosen oil cap any ideas
I assume that's the same engine they put in the caravan and several others!!!!
I'm looking for just a tad more HP in mine.
Does anyone have any ideas?
4.0l
more 2.5! been sorting a 90 wrangler myself.
Just ordered that idle air motor thingy ...cause I cant be bothered to fuck with it. Thamks for the idle setup procedure.
2.5 liters are great, I got over three hundred ten thousand miles on one.
From where did you get your Idle Speed Control Motor Walker? I need one for my 1986 jeep comanche 2.5
I just took my old one apart. Finding a new one will prove difficult for sure.
When are you gonna have more of the renix engine monitors for sale?
I'm going to have clock panel models in the coming months. The square ones are still on hold due to chip shortages until atleast 2023.
What’s that ticking noise after it’s off
Nick, I have the opposite problem that the warmer the engine gets the higher the idle becomes. Have purchased your Renix reader but no wrong sensor readings…
Wonder if you have an intake leak that gets worse as the engine heats up
@@NickInTimeFilms This is only if outside temperatures are low, idle rpm is fine in summer.
Where did you find the service manual? I've just recently picked up a 1988 MJ 2.5 and that would be really useful to me. My coolant temp gauge isn't reading and that information would save me a lot of time. 😅
found it out on the web somewhere, now i host it on my site. nickintimedesign.com/downloads/
Hi Nick mt2500 is not reading tps senser when I hand throttle engine 2.5 past idle tps is new and I don’t see any voltage or throttle percentage on mt2500 you think this is normal for mt2500 bought used just wonder what you might think
If it doesn't show, then there is possibly a wiring issue or a dead sensor
@@NickInTimeFilms thanks for responding I probably should explain it better so mt2500 reads tps senser at idle and when I hand throttle engine past idle mt2500 does not read any voltage change on sensor so I am wondering if you see voltage change on your mt2500 as you increase past idle I bought mine used so I don’t know if mt2500 should read past idle I would think so just curious if yours does?
Yes it should show currently TPS % in any mode, engine on or off
if i adjust my stepper motor to the specs it holds my throttle open to 1,400 rpm. tps is set to 14 at closed. wondering if the po messed with the fuel pressure regulator. somethings up.
The 2.5L is still strange to me as I haven't messed with it much. Does the tps read 94% at WOT? I found it easier to calibrate that way since the ism can effect the tps results
Check the feul pump or or put gas in the carburator
When are you going to do more with the Comanche?
When I find a use for it. I only bought it off my buddy so I could make my REM Scan Tools compatible with 2.5L.
Hi,
Do 2.5s not have a WOT switch?
Only the Wrangler 2.5L has a WOT switch.
@@NickInTimeFilmsthanks, was really confused looking for one! I have an 87 2.5.
@@NickInTimeFilmsalso I could not find the TAC sensor ANYWHERE and going crazy. saw two vacuum ports on the intake tube above the TB in your video… mine was on the floor so I didn’t even look lol.
Just curious. Did it get stuck again.
I think so. It's been a while so it's hard to recall
Hi Nick. Can you help? Picked up this same motor/trans combo yesterday in an '86 XJ 4dr. Idles at 1200 rpm all of the time, hot or cold. Idle tps is 1.05v. Throttle is at 21. All data taken from the MT2500. The egr diaphragm is bad since my hand pump can't pull any vacuum on it. So I plugged that vacuum line and nothing changed. Pinched the brake booster vac line, no change. I push the throttle lever as closed as I can, nothing changes. The screw on the idle motor is all of the way screwed in. The only thing I can see that is curious is below the egr valve mounting flange, is a bolt going into the egr area, below the flange, horizontally screwed in to about half of it's threads. Massive vacuum leak? What ever you have time for, I'd appreciate the help.
+Desert Mike DIY ok, so just to confirm, is your idle speed motor touching the throttle plate at all? Does it move in or out at all?
3 times through your video, me thinks my idle motor is stuck slightly outwards, holding the idle high. This occurred to me when your 2500 showed .7v and 14 on the tps. Both a bit higher than mine. Off comes the idle motor.
It is touching, but does not go in and out.
Yeah, if the motor doesn't extend when the engine is shut off then she's stuck. First priority would be to figure out why it doesn't move, or just adjust it so that it holds the throttle open less. The problem with the ISM is that since it holds the throttle open, it with offset your TPS reading. it needs to be checked and adjusted without ISM interference to get a true reading
Got it !!! I"ll go thru it tomorrow.
can you buy that part at autozone?
Nick you are a renix wizard! My 89 2.5 manual transmission. I have done cap, rotor, wires and coil. Sensor I have done o2 and coolant temp. Any ideas why it’s running rich?
Tough call. The 2.5Ls can be pretty touchy. Any vacuum or exhaust leaks? Got a scanner to test the rest of the sensors like Coolant and Air Temp?
I just found my map hose had a small leak. It’s a little better but my compression test showed 120-130 dry. 150-155 wet. No I don’t have a scanner. Yours scanner look awesome!but because mine is a yj will I be missing out on a lot of the features you scanner provides?
@@ricksmeneoza Nice find. Compression looks good then. And the REM II will work great on your YJ! It supports 2.5L Renix.
So i was able to do a lot of the things on these video. So thanks but i still have one question i got it to stay at the 1k RPMs but it is running rich what can it be
Hmm, that's a good question. My first thing to check is always the o2 sensor to see if it's responding properly.
Are jeep trucks rare? I seen one in my neighborhood broken down, they worth fixing?
They're rare-er then an XJ. Might be worth it.
I found out it was my uncle truck. Turns out he Sold it to my neighbor for $300 back in 98, what a steal!
Looks exactly like a 4.0
Just missing a couple cylinders and multi-port injection really
I have a Jeep Wrangler with a 2.5 throttle body like that and yeah I know what you're going through by taking them bolts off
Restoring a saab for some extra cash outside of work currently. You think this is a mess? You would be begging to work on something like this compared to what I have been dealing with. Only thing worse than saab is pontiac haha!
Just another Sabb story, haha. And I can vouch, 3.2L Pontiac Thermostat, holy mother of god what a craptastic design.
Old friend of mine had a grand am that needed the engine removed in order to change the alternator. Yes you heard that right... not lifted a little with the Trans still bolted on... REMOVED
I would say that for 80's generation cars from after working on two 80's Jaguar sovereigns one with six cylinder and one with v12 and also working on 3.2 and 3.8L from Pontiac engines in addition to Saab 900's I'd say the Jag is much worse design and unnecessary in its complexity. I do like Volvo's however.
@@1598hi damn
Is your 2.5 injected?
neshobanakni yes, these are fuel injected
Where did you get that intake tube?
Uhh... It came with the jeep? Just a factory airbox intake
@@NickInTimeFilms okay thanks. Mine doesnt have that style that's why I asked.
I't's not AMC, it's all manufacturers.
You just needed a shorter socket dude. Lol. But I hear ya.
the throttle adjustment screw is way off (the one your not supposed to mess with) the TPS is out of sync, it should read one volt closed and five when full open, when you back prob it, the idle speed motor is way off, that thing is supposed to reduce after run, key off throttle completly closed, if the idle is too high turn the 5 1/16 nut back in a few turns
"Throttle adjustment screw" is actually only used as a dead stop to keep the butterfly from hitting the bore so it shouldn't be messed with. I know the ISM has locked up occasionally so I'm not sure why the ECU keep trying to fully retract it sometimes. It'll run great if you drain the ecu memory, but then after a few starts it goes back to poop. Goofy little system for sure.
My idle Stepper motor goes in at shut off and extends on start
Dude can you swap a 4.0 in that thing I have the same one?
You can do anything with enough time and money, haha. I've not looked into it, it I'm sure there are plenty of write-ups online
I’m gonna put a small block chevy in mine. I thought about a 4.0 but I want a little more umph on the highway
Time and cash wasted 4.0 Engine Swap Needed. Engines are bulletproof many just being scrapped in Junkyards all over the USA.
Knowledge is never a waste. A turbo 2.5L could be a fun project, but that's more money than I want to spend on this anyway,
Lol haven't seen anything annoy you like that in a very long time. Interesting the way AMC over complicated simple things that could have been designed so much more efficiently, with in the TBI system instead of an external motor/gearbox combo. I've been working on a friends 92 GMC TBI 350 for about a week now, it's running way too rich, spitting gas out the exhaust. Chevy forums suck compared to Jeep forums. Hard to find any decent info on methods of testing specific sensors.
'89 Cherokee with a factory 2.5L cooling system is horrid also. No direct access to radiator and the overflow is ridiculous.
those battery terminals look like crap!
Not as much as him trying to do accents all the time,,,,
2.5s are trash. Basically removed any redeeming qualities of the amc 6 and manufactured it.
lol, how long did they make the 2.5
kevin w since like 84 or so
Wikipedia says the 2.5L was available in the XJ from 84 to 96. Surprised they lasted that long honestly.
NickInTimeFilms amc six lasted way longer lol. I drive a gremlin and your 4.0 will bolt right in. Only problem is CPS
NickInTimeFilms I think they lasted till 2004 that's pretty strong if you ask me Dodge actually used AMC's motor in there vehicles
What a pile of crap....LOL....
LOTS OF LAUGHS lmao
Hey brother, I’m having a similar issue. Any chance you could message me on Instagram or Facebook so I can ask a bunch of questions?
