what a treat it is to get a brand new ralfy review!
I for one, are counting you Ralfy for one of the best entertainers on the internet. And thank you for the tip on whiskybase.
Whiskybase really saved me a lot of money that might otherwise have been spent on mediocre, overprized whiskies (and vice versa: I've learned so much on this site that I went out an bought whiskies I'd never heard of if it weren't for WB). WB and Ralfy are my 2 trustworthy companions in the big world of whiskies.
Ever a pleasure, good sir. Love your commentary and insights - only SLIGHTLY less than a fine glass.
Always looking out for interesting port finishes. Thanks for the review :)
thanks for sharing your knowledge and honesty regarding the current circumstances in th Scotch Industry, sir! Your sage advice is welcome. You are a quality communicator. Cheers from Canada!
Here in the U.S. we've entered the age of "alternative facts" and it matters not whether the subject is news or whisky, "alternative facts" are just another word for smoke and mirrors to distract from the truth. Thank you for helping us see through the smoke Ralfy! And thanks for the website tip.
. . . sitting in my corner navigating you past the 'fake news'.
Aye, it's getting harder to see what's really going on in the world. Folk blame Trump but it's been going on for a lot longer than his reign. I'm very thankful for the internet and folk like Ralfy who will express factual, reasoned and intelligent opinions, but in doing so sees them for what they are: opinions! Sorry to digress on your point, Ossie, but I'm seeing so much 'hate' because people can't accept differing points of view or opinions. Not a good trend imo, and when combined with ALT facts . . . off to get my scythe and black hooded cape ;)
Malty misogynistic misinformed mullet men (from) Mars ;)
You are so right! Over a decade of poor governance and greedy corporations has opened the door for Trump, it could have been anyone else really. I'm a history major, so nothing really new here, just human beings doing what they do, it's been that way since time, Empire's fall and money changes hands but the game remains the same. All the best Rian, and peace. Sincerely, Ossie
Same to you Ossie :) And I totally agree, we never do learn - I seriously think it's due to our primate ancestry; they have no need for foresight, as it seems we don't as a species (but really do!). Keep the Faith & The Truth Will Out!
Hey Ralfy! Thanks again for another informative and entertaining review. I agree whiskybase is a great tool for sussing out the bottles for your next purchase. Helped me find some fantastic independent bottlings at a very reasonable price!
Another great review Ralfy thanks very much.
Couldn't agree more, keep up the good work mate.
You do us all a big favour with these reviews, and commendation's.
Thanks, Ralfy! I have a feeling I would love this one. So far Ardmore is two for two in my books for the Traditional Cask and the Three Wood. Nice they added an age stated to the range! By the way, I know you aren't a huge fan of the current Teacher's, and I do agree the old version wipes the floor with the new, but there is still some innate quality in there missing in most other basic blends. My two cents!
Cheers,
Mark

Been using whiskybase frequently for about 2 years now, it's great!
Longer reviews are cool with me
As always, I learn a lot from watching your videos... I will be seeking out more independents even though they are scarce here in British Columbia.
loved the traditional cask......cant seem to find it anymore.....here in the US
Anyone know how possible is it to get independent bottlings in the US? I've almost never seen them and I think we're not allowed to buy spirits online.
great review, your commemorative land speed record bottle and glencarin glass on scotch whisky auctions look incredible, i will be bidding on it..
. . . good luck with the bidding !
Over 1,000 viiews before 3 hours are over: Ralfy is a whisky sage ! You shall be saintified some day ! * I never like ANY port-cask finised (G'Morangie, G'dronach, Ben Riach ... all bad). Cheers ! (From Canada)
Ralfy, what have you heard about the progress of the distillery on the Isle of Barra?
Are there any Port cask finished single malt scotch that you can recommend? Cheers.
Most “finishes” of any kind that I’ve tried have faded as the fill receded... just as Ralfy describes here. As a result I tend to avoid them.
I really enjoyed the old 1 Litre bottlings of Ardmore Traditional Quarter Casks bought at the Retail Travel shops in the airport. Yes it was NAS but had a lovely fresh clean ashy peaty fruity flavour, very aproachable with a drop of water, a great introduction to those wishing to get into peated whiskies, They were replaced by the Legacy, a really bad poorly produced whisky. I agree with Ralfy regarding official bottlings. If I do purchase an Ardmore again it will almost certainly be an independant bottling.
@ralfydotcom can you recommend a port cask finished whisky that isn't peated?
Aaron Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban. x
Is Ardmore Tradition ranking higher or lower than this expression ?
yes, the Apple party is over! more unexpected gems of wisdom from my fav Scotsman.
Although I appreciate whiskybase for the use case, Ralfy mentions, there are at least three objections to be made: (1) Rates tend to be unreliable when they are by less then 10 people, (2) they are a really mixed bag, when they reach huge numbers >100, since popular whiskys seem to lure for "love it/hate it" votings, and (3) there is a constant trend for a slightly too high voting for older bottlings (plain speaking: it seems too hard for some people to admit having spend +100 Euros in s**t).
. . . true, but it is a better option for consideration than official marketing.
Sure, it's the second best option to make an informed choice. Right after taking a real sip before buying (which is often impossible in this crazy online bottle runs).
I am with you. Imho WB shows you a tendency regarding the quality of a whisky. Granted, too few votes are way more likely to distort the rating of a whisky, but I find it a good way to avoid really bad new releases and find overall great ones, too - if you happen to have an about average taste. :-) No scoring system for whatever is an excuse to switch off our brains when evaluating something. For some people the score (of a person deemed reputable) is the law, unfortunately. I was told on YT once I was wrong with my opinion about a whisky, "'cause Serge gave it a 90"...lol
Very good review rally, minimal worthy waffle 😀. Genuinely a good review.
*ralfy
Ralfy, in your experience, what distilleries seem to have the least problems with diminishing cask quality?
I'm very curious about that myself. Would love to know.
. . . mainly the Independents like Benromach, Glenfarclas, Arran and Springbank.
Always a pleasure
Ralphy have you tried the legacy Ardmore? I personally think its delicious and very very underrated, I can see the price going up for these in the future.
I've got a soft spot for Ardmore, think it might be the overlooked and underrated view most people have of it,not sure?? The traditional cask is stil one of my favourite lightly peated whisky I have ever tried!! My local co-op sold it for £16 and I wish I bought loads 😭😭
Late to the party. But I agree. The traditional or legacy is my daily whisky. Love peat but I don’t want heavy every night. It is also relatively cheap which is perfect for a nightly dram.
Really interesting hearing about "seduction of the peat" to a newer whisky drinker
thanks Ralfy for sharing how you use online tools. Do you go as far as to do statistical analysis on ratings from different sources?
and what other sources do you consider credible?
. . . no, I keep things simple.
whiskyfun.com is almost completely unlike whiskybase but it's run by a man with an incredible amount of experience. He's drinking things and making notes that are both very impressive, and funny too.
Hi Ralfy any plans to do a vodka review? Not really a vodka drinker but would be interesting.
Pls do a review for Teachers Golden Thistle Blended Scotch Whisky...Thank you for the amazing reviews Ralfy..
So many people are coming in line for reviewing whiskies but Old is Gold..No one has gone so deep as our Ralfy..
why do they come in a sleeve?
Hey Ralfy, when do you think we will see the first Ardnamurchan bottles ?
. . . best to ask the Distillery.
Everytime I watch one of your videos, I dream that I'm going to see you give out a nice chunky score (94, 95, 96. etc.)....sadly that day has never come.
Cross your fingers for the next Springbank review he does! :P
I noticed that Ralphy's malt mark cards only go up to 95!
Hey Ralphy! I had a similar experience with their Legacy. Such a short/weird experience that started out big! I'd rather have a worse tasting whisky with a finish! Such a let from what used to be one of my favourite single malts.
Been waiting for this one, haven't watched it yet, but I predict it will get short shrift because "finish".
...and sure enough, haha. But good to know that a fan of Robert Hicks can stick to Laphroaig as long as he's there. I will still try this one for myself.
Ralfy have you reviewed Ardmore Legacy? It is supposedly semi peaty. I do love your reviews. Oh I will say I trust your opinion ... Period.
Ralfy, did you change video formats? Not able to watch from my Kindle tablet anymore.
. . . nothing changed, settings are normal at my end. Hope you can sort to problem out.
It must be UA-cam.
Ralfys settings for sure doesnt affect the settings of UA-cam videos. Probably just youtube or your kindle device.
I must admit that I struggled with the recent 'Legacy' expression. Poor replacement for the 'Traditional' in my opinion. May give this one a wee look though. Maybe my local specialist might get some in sometime! Sláinte :-)
i really like this whisky.
Some very important points made here
Ralfy just picked up a bottle of Glen turner 12 , cant find much information on it! Can you help?
. . . don't know this bottle, it's not readily available in Scotland but appears to come from Starlaw Distillery. Don't expect much from this brand, it does not get great reviews.
ralfystuff I think you should do single malts to avoid
Negativity is not generally his style, though he sometimes ventures down the road to a "Ralfy Rant".
Ideally one finds a personal "translation" of an individual's score, be it you, Rafy, Serge or someone else. By investing some time, I can find out, what you like more and what less. So the viewer/reader can assess over time, where they share another individual's delights and bothers, and where their taste diverges and translate the ratings accordingly. It'll always be more exhaustive to shape you own informed opinion than to adopt some else's, but the payoff will be so much more rewarding.
. . . a good observation !
This is an excellent point. After almost 8 years of enjoying Ralfy's reviews I know our palates are very different but this doesn't mean that the QUALITY isn't there. The "form" of the whisky is the same for everyone. Ralfy discusses form at some length in one of his reviews, damned if I can remember which one.
E 150 caramel of corse...big hug Ralfy.
What happened to the Collectable Part 2 video that appeared really early on Thu morning and then disappeared? Or am I just going mad??
+ralfystuff I think it must have been just a delayed notification. It chopped off the end of 2017 which is why I thought it was update 2. Doh...
Can you do a review on triple wood admore
. . . no plans, I'm not hearing good feedback from friends.
Hi Ralfy! I am in need of some advice, if you could help me, new drinker from Brasil here. I have a sister coming from UK shortly and would like her to bring me 2 bottles of malts: one of peaty islay and one full sheried. For around £80 both, what would you recommend? Thanks in advance malt mate!
. . . Ledaig 10yo and Glenfarclas 15yo, (£85) good luck.
ralfystuff Thank you malt mate! Slainte!
While Ledaig 10 is definitely peaty, delicious, and excellent value, it's not from Islay.
I had a bottle of this, was so surprised by just how much I liked it considering its price and how little fanfare it got.
EDIT: Just finished watching the review. I really felt the port influence all the way through my bottle. Batch variation maybe? Got mine when it first hit the market.
. . . First batches are usually the best quality, then they 'sometimes' go downhill.
Pity in this case, it's the one Ardmore distillery bottling I like. I got it on a total whim to fill out an order from Europe (same shipping fee for up to 3 bottles, as good an excuse as any), didn't see any press on it or anything, I was really happy that I ended up liking it.
@Ralfy Sadly heard such thing about the Kikerran 12 lately, hopefully it's not true... :-(
Hogibaer AFAIK there has only been one Kilkerran 12 batch
@Hogibaer I quite like mine. I think some people were holding to a but too high a standard.
Malty Sherlock Holmes...classic!!!
9:02 when do I start with farts?
well done.
It was Ardmore that convinced me that I dont like peated Whisky.
hello
traditional or legacy or portwood????
Sehraj Singh Virk Traditional. If you can find it. x
Hey Ralfy! Please re review Clynelish 14
I would pay max about three fiddy for today's NAS whisky
Ralfy: Why the relative paucity of lowland distilleries?
. . . there are not that many !
Could be that the Lowland style is too light and delicate for most drinker's tastes.
Taste of stale tobacco? Do you mean "Ashtray"?
. . . that would be part of it.
Ralfy are the malt mentions getting more obscure ? Lol
. . . yes, they are as time goes on !
Malty Moto Guzzi Motorheads . . .
Ralfy's a little pissed in this video.
I thought you were no longer going to review non age statement whisky?
J Bennison it actually says "twelve years" on the tube (and I assume somewhere on the bottle as well). it's just not a big number that's easy to see.
. . . age statement is present on label.
Good to know! Thanks.
I hope, soon, you'll have a taste of a bottle of Laphroaig Lore. Yummy! Just like tasting a par of liquid Wellington's...?!
He promised to not review any NAS whiskies in 2017... so maybe in 2018 :D
Simon Ostermann He better do! It would be a shame not to. Fantastic whisky, NAS non the less... 😄
I'm on a quest to find the best port wood whisky which is a reasonable price. I was blown away by Dalmore and looking to try the Glenmorangie Quinina Ruban soon. I was hoping this would be a good one but it doesn't sound very good. I think I'll pass on this one.
Arran port cask
I've listened for some time about the many quality offerings provided by independent bottlers. Sadly, these are few and far between here in the US. I think I've seen maybe 3 independent bottlers represented on the shelves over here, and 9 times out of 10, you're just limited to 3 or 4 varieties from G&M. Shame. Consider yourself fortunate to enjoy the access you have in the UK!
If available in your area the Scotch Malt Whisky Society aka SMWS may be a good option. They've bottled some excellent Ardmore over the years.
+1 on the chrome book :-)
Marketing initiative marketing initiative marketing initiative marketing initiative. Great tongue twister to check whether you're pished.
NOT FIRST! What do I win!? :D
Ralfy I'm disappointed in you; you said you don't fall for style and marketing over substance, yet were drawn in enough to buy an Apple product? Well at least you've now learnt your lesson, better late than never! ;)
Ralfy recommends Whiskybase.com and also comments that cask quality is the most important stage in a single malt whisky. This is ironically where I feel Whiskybase needs the most improvement. Very often there is no information about cask types and this data field is left blank! The information regarding cask types is more than often available on the Internet or by an email to the distillery yet this, in my opinion, vital piece of information is in many cases, missing.
Then please contributed and add this information. Its community based and everyone can edit the information ... it needs to get approved then by some admin
❤️👍🥃
Giggled hard @ Ralfys face when hes talking about the finish. Can clearly see he doesnt enjoy the finish.
I think water has a lot to do with the quality of any spirit, seeing as it is the main ingredient. Just my 2¢.
Which distillery's marketing department do you work for? :-)
It doesn't really have much to do with it since all distilleries have good water. It's everything that happens in between that really counts.
Damned Alcoholic!
anyone come from bigclive
Definitely one of the worst bottle & label designs out there. I wouldn't say it's terrible, there's just nothing appealing about it. I think the most appropriate word that sums it up is 'meh'.
second?
First
