      Do you know if there’s a way to book a flight that departs from a different city? Ex. Fly DC into Frankfurt and then fly out of Paris back to DC?

      Hey Mark, when erasing your purchase, can you use the $300 travel credit before digging into your points? Thanks!

  • @travelcards

    Nice video Mark! A few additional points:
    - In general, you should *not* use points to book travel through the portal. Instead, book with cash, then use points to cover the cost of the travel purchase after it posts. That way you still get 1 cent per point, but you also get the 5-10x miles for the entire cost of the portal booking.
    - The portal has a few good price protection benefits. If you find a lower price for a booking within 24 hours of making it through the portal, you can call Capital One and they will price match. Also, if the portal recommends booking a flight because it thinks the price will only increase going forward, you will get a refund of up to $50 per ticket if the price decreases instead.
    - Some gift cards are actually worth 1 cent per point, e.g. the GAP one.

      There is a way to get the best value from your points, miles, or even hotel rewards. C•R gives you the best dollar value more than the issuer does, the value is 2-3x of the dollar value you normally get. Why not trade your points, miles, or hotel rewards today for a better dollar value than most portals offer you.

      @@johngreenwood4783 Doing what? Booking travel with cash first and then using points to cover the purchase? Yes, you get 1 cent per point if you’re covering a travel purchase, which is the same value as what you’d get in the portal.

      @@travelcards gotcha. But if you book with the portal then you get 10x or 5x points back vs just 2x by booking elsewhere. Correct?

    • @travelcards
      @travelcards 2 роки тому +4

      @@johngreenwood4783 Yes that's true. So what I was suggesting was to book through the portal, just *without* using points, paying with cash instead. That way you get the 5x-10x points. Then, if you wanted to use points to cover the purchase, you can do that after the booking has posted to your account, by using the purchase eraser. You'll keep the 5x-10x points by doing that.

    Hey Mark! Thanks for the thorough look at the C1 travel portal and redemption options. As someone who doesn't use C1, it was cool to see all the options and how it compares with other portals. Oh, and about the flight time thing, I'm pretty sure it's because airlines want to minimize "delayed" flights to improve their metrics. I often fly up and down California and those flights are definitely less than 1 hour, but they're always listed for 90+ min. These flights always seem to land "on-time" though, hah! Just my two cents about that. Great walkthrough video!

    • @markplymale
      @markplymale  2 роки тому

      Thanks Stan! I never thought about that with the short flights but that definitely makes sense! When I have someone to be early I like to take the 6am out of LEX to ATL and I’m always walking to the next terminal before 7am. Only thing that would slow that down is weather since the 6am is the first out! Appreciate you watching and that’s insight!

    I've used the Travel portal recently to book a weekend trip to Charlotte. Not only was the price a little lower, but they refunded me 30 dollars because the price dropped, and applied my annual travel credit within one billing period. They have been adding more flight options to my destinations as well, haven't used the hotel option yet, because I was booked earlier with a group rate (reunion). Will definently use them as the first option in my future choices.

    Hey dude thanks so much for covering this. Currently deciding on my first travel card and no UA-camrs seem to cover what it's like to actually use these portals. it seems everyone who games cards just has these for the perks, but never actually uses their points to book travel through them, or they just transfer the points out.
    Seeing the portal booking process and determining if these are actually worth using compared to booking direct or another site is the last question I need answered before finally taking the plunge. If someone did a video comparing using these portals to booking direct or through other sites, as well as portal comparisons, that would be immensely helpful. It seems from your video it still might not be worth booking through the portal, which may explain why all other youtubers say they just transfer out.

      Lucky enough for you I’ll be booking a flight using the Venture X to get the $300 credit tonight and making a video on it hopefully for tomorrow or the next day. I’ll then be using points to cover the remaining costs after the $300 has been credited! I agree those things are really important to see when you’re trying to decided which card is the best for you!

Your reply reminded me though that in order to receive the bonus, you'll have to use the portal at some point, correct? Do you need to use it at least once a year in order to take advantage of the $300 credit and 10,000 bonus miles?

But does the portal have Jap Air now that it’s a year later from this video? Or what airline does the portal have to go from FLL to HND via first class? Chase sapphire preferred might be a good one or the regular venture one (both have lower annual fees). I suggest chase because sometimes companies won't let you get the spending bonus within a certain amount of time. For example chase won't let you get a sapphire spending bonus within 48 months of your last bonus. C1 is kind of broad and they just say "you may or may not get another spending bonus". Those cards may have a higher multiplier in certain categories compared to the VXs 2x overall. Or maybe dive into some hotel cards since you have an omni travel card. Some have free anniversary nights that would offset the annual fee. All this is my opinion but it really come down to what you want to do and what's best for you.

      C1 might have less partners now but most airlines have domestic airline partners. But you could transfer your points british airways and book a united flight since they're partners. Personally I think C1s credit is more upfront. Like what if your doing some travel and when you use your chase card it doesn't get coded as travel.... is it more broader yes but it doesn't necessarily mean it's better imo.

    So do you have to use the portal to get the 5x points or can I use let’s say Expedia and book a flight/ hotel and get the points from paying with the card

    Are the capital one points as valuable as the Amex or Chase points? Wouldn’t it more valuable to have the better list of travel partners that chase and Amex have and get more than .01 cents per point?

    • @markplymale
      @markplymale  2 роки тому +1

      I would say Cap 1 miles are less valuable than amex and chase points based on how I typically redeem points by transferring to partners. With Cap 1 so far I have only redeemed to reimbursed for flights and a car rental so yeah just 1cpp value. Not great but the Venture X card is basically free when you factor in the credits and what not so I got it for that reason and still like earning cap 1 miles

      Not just yet but I will be soon! I’ll be booking a flight in the next month or so and a rental car around the same time and I’ll be using the portal for the credits

      There is a way to get the best value from your points, miles, or even hotel rewards. C•R gives you the best dollar value more than the issuer does, the value is 2-3x of the dollar value you normally get. Why not trade your points, miles, or hotel rewards today for a better dollar value than most portals offer.

    What's the transfer rate from dollars to travel miles. Example how many miles can you get if you transfer $1,000. I ask cause I don't have a miles card but I have $1,000 is cash back from 3 cards (Quicksilver, Quicksilver One, Business Sparks) doing nothing.

    Wow, this portal looks bad, in the sense their prizes are really high, and dont get the kind of point multiplier chase has. It would have been interesting for you to compare the Capital one prizes next expedia, as opposed their word on what the expedia prize is. On chase, I alway compare their prizes to expedia and other sites, and the chase always ends being cheaper because of the multiplier. Granted, even the chase portal has been jacking up prizes, but that is a given.

    So if you get a rental car for let's say a week and it's over the $300 statement travel credit amount . Would that just be deducted from total? Or do rental cars not count as travel

      You'll probably checkout at the full price but you'll get the travel credit back either immediately or within a few days. C1 says it could take up to 2 billing cycles.

    I wouldn't recommend this card - the exchange points for the travel isn't worth it.
    Supposedly, there is a price drop protection on travels. Booked a ticket and there was a price drop. Called into Capital One Travel and they indicated there wasn't any on my specific itinerary. However, when checking again on that same flight - it did say there was a price drop protection.
    The variety of airlines that being offered isn't worth it either. I am canceling this card.
