EXXX piano and violin kid here, no departments stores but i had to do a little sumtheen sumtheen for when it was our turn to host family get togethers 😭
I had a Yamaha, AND a Casio, sis! Hahahaha! Y'all remember them songs like Oh Danny Boy?! 😅😅😅 Yoooooo, Addy from American Girl?! I had saved up my money from babysitting to buy her! Hahahahaha! 💖💖💖 My mom and Evelyn's mom must have been related, because, dang! But play is something that we (black folks) were always told to "stop playing" (recalling Wanda's most recent stand up comedy show). It's important to never lose that inner child that helps us cope with adulting. I've been reading more (physical) books, going outside, bouncing my basketball, playing beach volleyball, and smiling more because of it. Go out and play today! Thank you Evelyn, this video was/is much needed!
preach! I'm trying to think back to my childhood, but all I remember is making shitty dolls from my torn clothes and drawing (turns out, I don't have an imagination anymore lol)
I feel so put on the spot. Like... I love reading and writing. Does that count? 😭 I have no musical talent and I tried sewing and I don't have the patience.
God, I'm like 3 minutes into this and I feel this so hard: I'm basically doing everything I want right now and I feel nothing but burned out and stressed out, which feels... wrong? Like, I'm so privileged to be here, but I'm also a neurotic mess because literally everything I have goes into my work every single day, and I feel like I have nothing left for myself. what I'm saying is you knew the perfect time for the right video to my heart. okay, now to watch the rest. Also, I think it's really funny that you're making a video about this when that's also the stressor. But I guess that's kinda your thing too.
I'm 19 and I also have no hobbies and I feel so miserable because I'm always doing school related things or I'm wasting time on my phone. We sometimes overlook the importance of doing something outside our regular rutines just to enjoy it.
I think that's a part of being an adult that never crossed my mind. When you're in school your creative time is structured by teachers and care givers, as is the praise received. This was super helpful. I've been bullet journaling for about 3 years and I love it! I get to doodle, organize, and write about my day for da funnn!
When I was a kid I wanted to learn about other cultures and I signed up for this letter exchange program(this was in the 80s) and I ended up writing to this other kid in France for 5-6 years I had so much fun finding stationary and buying stamps it was .50 cents back then to send something overseas. Sigh memories.
I had a few penpals back in the olden days. There used to be listings in the last pages of Black Beat magazine and I would pick ppl to write to. None of these "friendships" last that long though.
@@dezb8510 Yeah. That was called a videocamera. I remember those too. My dad and I watched Boyz n Da Hood and King David together many times on VHS in the mid 80s & early 90s. I have decided that these tech changes don't mean we are old in any way. Rather they are a reflection of how quickly things change and our beautiful ability to remember. We're still young. I know I am! 😂✌🏼
as someone who was always told to not have hobbies unless it produced something useful, it was really nice to watch someone indulge in themselves and focus solely on bringing back their hobbies. it's motivation to find something I can do for fun without thinking I'm silly :')
I learned a few years ago, that if I wanted more happiness, I just needed to "revisit" my favorite hobbies more FREQUENTLY! Just working and working can be so draining...😓
That random people ZINE took me out... 😂🤦🏾♀️🤷🏾♀️👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 I’m proud of you cousin... for getting back to yourself and things you like to do! Very inspiring... 🤔
I think having a hobby that REMAINS a hobby is key. People said “ohhhh your photos are so good, you should do this and that and get paid”. That wasnt the move. #perfectionist Haven’t touched a camera in a year bc it came with too much baggage BUT this inspired me to pick it up again and keep it just for fun 📸 Childhood hobbies: collecting rocks 😩, reading (this was major) , coloring, taking photos, rearranging and decorating my room 🤷🏾♀️
I remember “LET’S GO”!!!! That was wayyyyyyyyyy back in the day when you used describe your hair as “Shine-T” when you did the product reviews!!! You were loved then, and are loved now, Ms. Thang!!! I appreciate you sharing your gift (or hobby, once removed) with the internets! 🤗👍🏾
When I was a kid I did this weird thing where you put lots of beads onto this frame and then ironed it and then you had this ironed plastic...thing. I also did the thing where you made beads into animals and braided plastic into lanyards. My childhood hobbies were manipulating colorful plastic and reading now that I think back on it. Very strange. Good video!
I'm screaming because I loooovvveddd making things out the beads and ironing them. Anything that had girls on a box smiling and having fun I wanted it lol making bracelets and all . I used to make tree houses with popsicle sticks, and take a part my Barbie bicycle from the dollar store lol
my hobbies were painting , making books, creating wacky clothes by drawing, cutting and painting on them. Now that I'm older, I only paint every blue moon but I still enjoy it 😊
I started knitting again! My grandma taught me years and years ago and I decided to pick it up again. It's incredibly relaxing and I only try to do it when I feel like it, it's not something I force myself to do as a chore.
As a child, I collected pencils. After school, when all my classmates were outside and I was waiting for my parents to pick me up I would go back into my classroom and collect all the pencils that were on the ground from that day. I even got a few of my friends into doing it lol
My childhood hobby was basically archiving. I would spend hours downloading music files back when you could use an iPhone as a flash drive and I’d compile the whole album from scratch, put in the cover art, the song info, and then catalog my music library all on my own. ☺️
The American girl books were my childhood too!! I think it took me like 2 months to get through all 4 chapters of “Meet Josefina” and I was so proud of myself when I did, lol

I was just starting to learn the Bach Suites. Yes, even in the ghetto we learned Bach 😂. Good times. Good times *sigh*
I appreciate this. I started an entire company to afford a camera, to make videos, for fun. It's an expensive hobby but I refuse to let filmmaking be my job
i've always been the kind of person who has too many hobbies - i get enthusiastic about things pretty easily. As a child: dancing, theatre, reading, sewing, drawing, playing the clarinet etc etc, as an adult: bouldering, dancing, yoga, knitting, drag shows, cooking, hiking, painting....
Wow this video is so timely! My therapist recently told me that I need to "play" so I can discover my passions. Some of the hobbies from my childhood that I want to explore again are writing (for fun) and studying languages. I'm definitely gonna check out skillshare to help with this. Thank you, Evelyn!
This totally reminds me of when I used to love, LOVE , drawing and art as a child but then I did art as a subject in high school. As soon as exams came in, it totally killed it for me. Determined to get back into though
It never fails to amaze me how in-tune and on-time my favorite youtubers are. I've been thinking so much about my childhood lately (therapy, therapy, therapy) and one of the things I had been thinking about was how I spent my free time as a kid. I grew up on an old dairy farm with my little brother and one neighbor close to our age...we played soooo many imaginary games. The barn was our hospital, school, grocery store, restaurant.... I miss that creativity.
I collected rocks and shells, star gazed, and did “science experiments” with my science kit that my 3rd grade teacher gifted me for my birthday (thanks Ms. Emmanuel). I also remember really liking to explore.
Hobbies included: reading, baking without recipes, journaling, coloring, making greeting cards, jewelry making, playing guitar, bassoon and clarinet, writing lyrics and poetry, riding my bike...wow! This was helpful (and depressing) for me to write out!
After the keyboard and the reading I thought was good. But boooooool when you got to that dayum homemade book and “rour-ed,” I had to pause the video to get myself together. Ugly cry, snot, and all! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 I NEEEEEDED this today, thanks Cuzzo!
Gurl, I was the queen of the Exacto knife. I would collage new cassette (...yes, I wrote cassette) and CD covers for my favorite artists, and design/write/draw my own books. It's amazing you posted this video. My therapist asked me a few weeks what I do just for my fun and I couldn't think of a damn thing.
My main hobby as a child was playing with dolls and making them clothes. I still make clothes but for myself. Keeping up a hobby is a learning curve but the pride and joy will hit different. It’s worth it.
Yes Addie American Girl books! I had the WHOLE set. Most of my childhood weekends (after morning chores were finished) were spent reading those and excessively replaying the Cinderella soundtrack on my dad's record player. Cinderella on Vinyl! Child, I don't even know where it came from but to this day I know every single lyric.
Childhood Hobbies - ALL forms of dance. Coloring w/colort pinnceeells ( i need to get back to that!), baking w/Grandiva (kiss to the sky), and hmmmm I know there was more. Thanks for this reminder, Evelyn the Great!
Seeing your book with Heidi sent me right back to when my cousin and I would play “fanclub” and make books with drawings of our favorite cartoon characters and try to write the names of every family member we could think of.
When I was a Lil', if you will, I drew constantly, on any scrap of paper I could find. I drew little comics of me and my friends. I read like crazy (American Girl books too! I only had 2 Addy books, but mostly Felicity). Roald Dahl was my favorite. I had wanted to meet him and found out he passed away, so I drew a picture as tribute: my fourth-grade self sitting under a tree, eyes closed, with a book in my lap, and the sun shining with titles of his books in each sunbeam. I collected rocks, neat-looking bottles, stamps, keys. I was a bit like Baby Evelyn in that I also always wrote things down: journals, diaries, poems, short stories, somewhere I even have a few cassettes I made as audio journals! Thank you for this inspiration to not lose our curiosity, Evelyn!
We had almost the same hobbies! I didn't play piano, I played violin. I loved reading. I mostly just read for school now, or listen to audiobooks. I also made my own books when I was a kid! I have made zines as an adult and it is so fun to channel the activities that gave us joy as kiddos.
I love anything arts and crafts. I have a craft bag to make stuff. I paint, make slime with my niece, and other random things. These things make me happy and I def agree with PLAY! P
How are you SO incredible!!? Love your vids! Childhood hobbies? Hmmm... as a child of the 70s (not a typo ;-)), learned to crochet (still do) and knit, macramé and every other thing to do with yarn or those strips of fabric used to (basket)weave into potholders! Definitely a reader (then and now) and... gasp! I remember... my sister and I used to write skits and act them out! haha! Most of my real fun came from playing outside. LOVED finding creeks, woods, trails, etc.. I wasn't really an indoor person - only doing those indoor activities in bad weather! In any event, thoroughly enjoyed your photos and hobbies! Your family is great! God bless you all and cannot wait until your next vid!
Yep! So many of my childhood joys are now my occupation. Which is a step up, and I am proud of myself. It took me a minute, to reorient my life, so I was doing more fulfilling work. Now I got to find that balance, and get back to creative play. As a child, I would make up skits, and improvise entire scenes with recurring characters. I used to make up songs and record those. Make up dance routines, or spend hours learning the dances from music videos. I would cut up socks, and make outfits for my dolls. I would drape sheets over myself and my sister, and we would make outfits for ourselves. I would go "exploring" through my neighbor hood: translation- trespassing into yards, fields, and woods that didn't belong to me. AND just like internet cousin, making books, doodling, and reading.
Knitting and photography!!! When I get bored I break out the knitting needles and some yarn. Old lady gang 👩🏿🦳. Photography helps me look up from my phone and observe what is going on around and above me. I also play escape room games as a hobby.
Honestly. This is my favorite video you have ever made. I use to play the saxophone and pretend to own a restaurant. I would make fake menus and come up with creative names for my dishes. I would use up all my Nana’s napkins and a plastic forks. I really need to tap back into that.
Every video it gets more and more apparent we must have came for the same spiritual plane from birth 😃 when you start talking about book binding I almost lost 👏👏
I used to play the piano too. My go to hobbies are reading, going to the movies, journaling, going to thrift stores and book stores and going on walks :)
Your videos always make me smile A LOT! Like A LOT!! I heart you!!! I enjoyed finding very old and or odd random pieces of factory equipment or just weird looking “artifacts” I don’t know how else to describe it lol. I would just observe them for however long it took trying to figure out what they were once used for. I remember how happy and excited i felt inside lol.. Just imagining the possible uses for these things and how old they were fascinated me... I enjoyed writing silly stories. Drawing houses with lots of trees. Exploring and getting lost in the woods. I enjoyed breaking things a part and putting them back together trying to figure out how they worked. Reading!!!! Everyone wanted a piece of my book collection... Oh Evelyn, thank you for this.🤗
Girl, You made me want to get back to writing those stories for fun. I picked up reading physical books again because like you, I was living the audible and podcast life. As a kid I loved nature, bird watching and would spend the days in the woods, trying to find dem birds or letting my imagination take me to historical places while in the woods. Kinda feels unsafe now but I was and still about that natural life.
Evelyn is my spirit animal. I hate that I am old enough to be her auntie and she gets in my head! I played piano for fun as a kid. I was horrible but I enjoyed it.
This is the exact reason why I decided to do something that isn't my hobby as my job and eventually learn to love it. Cuz my personality is the type that can't always create when I want to since I get artist blocks a LOT
This gave me that 'Brought to you by PBS kids like you're feel and I'm THANK FUL 😫😫🙌🏾 One of my hobbies was watching other kids explore and do fun projects so...obviously I see that's still my hobby? Can that be a hobby? 🤦🏾♀️ Thank you Evelyn!!!!
My hobby as a kid that I just got back into this past January was video games. I stopped in college only because I didn't want to bring expensive game systems to school but I just never got back into it. It's been really great because now I have something that I get excited about that isn't tied to my value, productivity, skill level, or anything else I overthink.
I've started doing this recently (or at least attempting to). I'm just to reconnect with my inner child and give her a chance to dream again, you know?
I had lots of hobbies as a kid. I danced (hip hop, tap, jazz, ballet, modern), baking(is now my job), reading, cooking(also kind of my job), piano playing, and probably some other things I don’t remember at the moment.
Girl! First off,I must say that I'm loving the more frequent uploads! 😁 Giving quality content to the ppl! I loved this video! I, too, grew up on them Addy books!! (And all five are still in my possession! 😅) Hopefully I can pass them down to my daughter one day 😊 Hobbies I enjoy are crafting and diys, creating things for my enjoyment and the delight and enjoyment of others. Ppl keep telling me to open an Etsy store - I'm thinking about it. ☺️ When I was a kid I used to love to read, too - mostly cause I was an only child and had to entertain myself a lot but I definitely enjoyed it! I also used to enjoy writing. I don't get to do either a whole lot these days but your video allowed me to remember my younger self and reminisce on some of my favorite loves! Thx again for this video. I knew by the title it was gonna be good and full of laughs! 😅 Hope you're having a great day! 👋🏼
i was obsessed with hoarding empty boxes. sometimes i would put stuff in them but mostly i just stacked them in my wardrobe. swap 'department store' for 'old folks home' then, yep same.
OMG Evelyn! I swear I had that same night gown when I was little hahahaha (the one you're wearing on christmas morning opening your barbie camera). My hobbies right now....eating and/or trying new foods/restaurants when I have the money lol I also enjoy reading when I get the time..oh and adult coloring books. As a kid it was definitely coloring and building forts and tents out of the couch pillows and dining room chairs with my lil sis. We also had a fake talk show 'Debroah Jones Show' and I would act as different people on the show, kinda like Oprah. My sister was Debroah Jones and she had a wig and everything lol. Oh I use to make those plastic string/lanyard keychain things too
I have absolutely no hobbies. Used to read, play guitar, write songs, write poetry, make funny videos etc. Just fell out of touch with everything. Adulthood hit REAL hard. This is inspiring though. Gotta get back to doing what makes me happy 😁
I feel like if we had gone to the same school growing up, we would have been friends. I had all of the same hobbies, plus a bunch of other random creative things. I used to make a lot of miniture rooms in shoeboxes out of random craft junk. Now I love reading (middle school aged books are my guilty pleasure). And also I'm getting into making ink out of foraged nature, so that could be your modern day equivalent to collecting sticks and rocks.
I totally was a book maker! I used to make newsletters on Microsoft Publisher and got in trouble using all the color ink in the printer! I loved that hobby have restarted it recently! Michaels and Joann’s are now my two best friends lol
I still have hobbies (in college right now so don’t have much to do) but they’re all kinda old school: lots of knitting, sewing/making plushies, playing a couple instruments very poorly (but having fun!). The one hobby that’s always stayed with me is drawing. I’ve liked it since I was a kid and I never stopped even now. I try to keep my hobbies and fun separate from my work and study goals because I want it to stay a fun time and a refuge from stress
Any piano kids in the comments? Did y’all randomly have recitals in department stores too?! Please say yes lol
Keyboard kiddo here! Had to learn music theory in my household:)
My son is having recitals in department stores, even Costco! and the local airport. It's still a thing!

My sister and I had an elaborate, drama filled, and complicated cartoom series that was based on the narrative we had created with our baby dolls.
Same! But with my brother lol.
We also invented world wars and incorporated celebrities into our takes lol.

It's amazing you posted this video. My therapist asked me a few weeks what I do just for my fun and I couldn't think of a damn thing.
Hey, Evelyn. Just wanted to let you know that I really enjoy you.
Little Evelyn was ADORABLE!😍😍😩
My main hobby as a child was playing with dolls and making them clothes. I still make clothes but for myself. Keeping up a hobby is a learning curve but the pride and joy will hit different. It’s worth it.
Yes Addie American Girl books! I had the WHOLE set. Most of my childhood weekends (after morning chores were finished) were spent reading those and excessively replaying the Cinderella soundtrack on my dad's record player. Cinderella on Vinyl! Child, I don't even know where it came from but to this day I know every single lyric.
This brings me back to growing up in the 90s. I didn't have a Nintendo or Sega. I had Barbies, Casio piano and coloring books. 😌 Those were the times.
PLAY NEVER FELT THIS WAY EVELYN! I was just listening to it the other day!
Give it up for Addy errybody!!! That was the ultimate throwback book!
Where have you been all my life?! Love you 😍 lol not the Comet in the bathtub ! Lol 😂
So important for adults. Everything I ever do is with a purpose ❤ I also need hobbies
YES! This encouraged me!!!! (And it was HIGHLY entertaining...And I like that "Random People" zine... :-)
OMG! I remember Addy!!! Ahhh the nostalgia!
Oh Evelyn, thank you for this.🤗
That Comet on the bathtub🤣🤣🤣 took me out
Girl, You made me want to get back to writing those stories for fun.
You brought me back with those American Girl books. Those were the good days 😭😭
This gave me that 'Brought to you by PBS kids like you're feel and I'm THANK FUL 😫😫🙌🏾 One of my hobbies was watching other kids explore and do fun projects so...obviously I see that's still my hobby? Can that be a hobby? 🤦🏾♀️
Thank you Evelyn!!!!
My hobby as a kid that I just got back into this past January was video games. I stopped in college only because I didn't want to bring expensive game systems to school but I just never got back into it. It's been really great because now I have something that I get excited about that isn't tied to my value, productivity, skill level, or anything else I overthink.
Good to be raised wealthy and supported by your family.
*screaming* MEET ADDY!!!! I used to Stan these and make the lil paper dolls. Literally THE ONLY books I actually ready 😂....such a throwback whew
Wow wow wow! So much joy! Couldn’t stop smiling and laughing. Thanks, Evelyn! 😂💕
I finally found a hobby : I enjoy bullet journaling!! Love it! Such a great way to decompress.
I've started doing this recently (or at least attempting to). I'm just to reconnect with my inner child and give her a chance to dream again, you know?
15:08 the pure joy when u open that gluestick lol
Oh I use to make those plastic string/lanyard keychain things too
Damn your brother grew up since those post college vlogs 😱🤯😱
I have absolutely no hobbies. Used to read, play guitar, write songs, write poetry, make funny videos etc. Just fell out of touch with everything. Adulthood hit REAL hard. This is inspiring though. Gotta get back to doing what makes me happy 😁
I’m trying to get back into my hobbies - like reading! It’s hard when your hobby becomes your job.
I loved coloring books when I was little. Drawing all over the place!
I could not possibly love Evelyn any more than I do - she's INCREDIBLE!! Always making the things I didn't know I needed and making it so obvious! ❤️🌟
When you mentioned the comet in the bath tub and having to give your stuff to your cousins, I felt that 😣
I totally was a book maker! I used to make newsletters on Microsoft Publisher and got in trouble using all the color ink in the printer! I loved that hobby have restarted it recently! Michaels and Joann’s are now my two best friends lol
You’re so right. I used to have hobbies and I don’t now! Adulting!
We need to make hobby-building part of adulting! But it's so hard when life is stressful.
