- With the 2022 Winter Olympics approaching, the BarDown squad decided it was finally time to do a quiz on the IIHF (sort of). Players from all around the world have played in the NHL. Do you know every country's leader in NHL points?

I have been holding this until a new quiz came out and now I can throw out the idea. I do not know if it would be great for a full quiz or just a bonus question, but here it is. Many teams have announcers with very recongizable voices and I think it would be interesting to have some calls played aloud, without key players of course, and you'd have to say the team they announce for! Thanks for reading all the comments! Cheers!

As a Sharks fan I knew the Latvian one (Sandis Ozilins) the moment it came up. Legendary player, did so much for hockey in Latvia.
Would love to see a quiz with goalie questions only! Either set up Vince to fail or have him host it so DZ can get in on the action! Love when DZ makes it to the final boss every time!

Maybe an even well known Latvian player is Arturs Irbe, who was a goalie, so it wouldn't show up on the list. Current Latvian NHL players are Zemgus Girgensons (Buffalo), Teodors Blugers (Penguins) and Rudolfs Balcers (Sharks) as well as Elvis Merzlikins (Blue Jackets) and, maybe some might remember the somewhat recent tragic event in which we lost Matiss Kivlenieks, who was also a goalie for Colombus
Sergei Zholtok was also Latvian
Columbus loves our Latvians
And only one of those forwards had an All-Star game appearance…

as an LA fan since birth I just love that Luca confidently mistook Slovakia and Slovenia hahaha but I appreciate the Kopitar shoutout. If I recall that might be the only time his name has been mentioned in a Bardown quiz

Fun fact: Slovakia and Slovenia get mail that was intended for the other country so often, that once every month they have representatives from each country meet in Hungary to exchange mail.

The US one messed me up, since I believe Brian Trottier represented both Canada and the USA on the international stage.
Yes he did, but since Canada Cup is/was not a IIHF rules tournament, they had different rules concerning representation. There has been others who have played for different team, like Peter Stastny, Petr Nedved and so on.
See I just got tripped up by the fact Bret Hull played for team USA. I was stuck on Madano being American born.
Between his humility, intelligence, and great taste in Premier League clubs, Corwin is easily my favorite Bardown employee. COYG!

Fun fact: Slovakia actually has a better all-time NHL points leader than Šťastný and it's Stan Mikita who was born and raised there, but he has moved with his family to Canada when he was just a kid .RIP legend

But has he ever played for Netherlands? He has dual citizenship and could technically choose Canada over Netherlands. Well he perhaps will never make it to any Team Canada, so we will never know until he chooses to play for either one.
Eddy Beers, Ed Kea and John Wensink have more points than Sprong but Wensink is the only one that played for the Dutch national team
For a future quiz: Players who have become coaches/GMs/execs. Questions like who's the ex player who has the most Cup rings as coach/GM/exec, etc

3:42 - Luca, the U.S. has NEVER gotten as high as #2 on the IIHF men's rankings.
And that's mostly because they don't take the World Championship seriously enough.
(For those who don't know, the ranking is based off two tournaments: the World Championship and the Olympics)
They've also not excelled in the olympics in the last 40 years.

Also because Finland, Sweden and Russia are straight up better and have been for a while. USA is just more relevant for Canadians and Americans for obvious reasons.

2. Funfact. Did you know that Stan Mikita was born in a small village in Slovakia (and was proud of it and of his native language)? He moved to Canada as a very young boy (8 yo I guess) and lived there with his uncle and his wife. In fact, the official NHL website counts him as a Slovak player.

Between Messiers interaction with Steve Dangle, Jesse's experience, and his time in Vancouver, seems theres a lot of instances of Messier being a bit of a difficult person. At the very least hes not much of a people person, yet makes you rethink why they have a Leadership award named after him, yet Gretzky doesnt have a single award named after him.

This quiz (particularly the part about Nigel Dawes being Kazakhstan's #2 scorer) led me down a rabbit hole leading to the discovery that Brandon Bochenski, an American that got Kazakh citizenship while playing in Astana in the KHL, is now mayor of Grand Forks, North Dakota. Seems weird to me.
Knew this one too. Kazakhstan as well as Belarus seem to really enjoy naturalising top khl players. Really weird that he became a mayor in the usa right after retiring
