Hundreds of thousands hit the streets in Romania to protest the parliament's late-night loosening of anti-corruption legislation. The government claims it's to relieve prison overcrowding, the opposition says it's to get the leader of the ruling social democrats off the hook in a scandal. How do you fight an engrained culture of corruption? More broadly, have standards improved since the country joined the EU in 2007?

I am from Romania originally and wanted to live in another country since before and after the revolution due to corruption. So I did over 10 years ago. Although things improved after the revolution in terms of basic fundamental rights i.e. life and death, corruption was very much present. I hoped that after years younger generation fed up with corruption will get in relevant power positions across the sectors and make a change. It is sad to see that things aren't where they should be with all the freedom widely available to the country since the communism was eradicated. Sad that corruption it's still very much allowed. Sad that old corrupted dogs are not replaced
