Would have been interesting to see what the medium size JumboMax that was recommended for you and see those results….i use the JumboMax small size on my wedges and had great results
Get fit for the exact right size of those and just take the time to get used to them. It’s going to feel weird and like you have to force it, I mean you said yourself you’ve been using regular grips for 20 years. But it’s absolutely worth giving a real go especially over the winter.
He actually used JumboMaxs app to get fit for his size, though strongly explore Rick at least try one size up and one down if he isn’t happy with the medium
@@JVGaming yea sorry thank you for adding that clarification, I did mention it but obviously not a good enough job. I would say he should at least TRY the small if he isn’t fully sold on the medium. I’ll also mention though Rick will probably not see this. Switching back to a standard grip is infinitely harder than switching to the JumboMax after a month or two.
that's the problem, it's gonna feel weird for awhile. he doesn't have that kinda time. if he puts those on he'll be playing crap for months, months which he'll be tortured with even more stupid comments.
I have the same sized hands as you Rick. I switched to this 2 years ago for my driver and I have never thought to go back! I also played baseball and softball for a long time so it felt similar to a bat grip. It will 100% take a way bad hooks and has changed my driver game for the best! Wish I had these long ago.....
I play with the jumbomax xl grips but im 6'5" with working hands like a gorilla hand. I love them. It seriously changed from feelimg like a tooth pick in my hands to a natural feel i dont have to squeeze so hard my grip feels so much more natural now too.
I just got these grips, I've played three rounds. My hook is gone. My longest drives with normal grips were in the 290s. With the Jumbo Max I had three drives last round of 322, 318 and 312. Pretty crazy. I am blocking more iron shots though in time i think I'll adapt. Overall very happy.
Back in my 20s I switched to jumbo grips (they are not as big as the Bryson grips but bigger than standard regular grips). It really helped me in every aspect. Same for my putter grip. I never went to the newer, massive diameter putter grips. I tried one for a while and hated it. Everyone is different. Find what works for YOUR game and that you feel confident with.
I bought the Jumbo Max XL Lite because I was developing a snap hook. Fell in love instantly on the first hit. My miss is more of a push right or when I really catch up a 3-5 yd baby draw. You get a sense of relaxing the grip when you grip the club. I know in the lite version you can actually feel the club head and the position at impact sooooo much more. I was skeptic on these but had nothing to lose because having a two way miss is way more infuriating than trying out a new grip Debating on changing all my iron grips to Jumbo Max Lites as well but going to experiment and probably go medium/large size instead of XL like I have in my driver
I use a half-way solution. Glove size L - XL Option used is the Dri-tec Over sized grips weight 45gram then layer 8 layers of masking plus 3 front layers so 12-15 grams of tape. Weight 60 gram. So keeps my swing weight at D2-D3. Dead straight shots every tie, very pleased.
I use oversized grips although I have very large hands. And I would definitely recommend if u have very large hands aswell. I definitely hit the ball more accurately
Back down to a mid size and see what that does. I just switched to midsize because of arthritis in my hands and it’s helped so much. Much better ball striking. Plus my top finger to wrist is 9 1/2 inches so I should have been using these for years
I already saw the video were you played with the medium one's, honestly I think you played better and it was your first time with them, on this comparison you hit the driver with the XL instead of the medium, and it might be the reason why you did not grouped your shots closer together. I installed the medium ones on my complete set and I have not done amazingly well, but I have only played 2 times and definitely felt way much better then the regular grips. Keep on posting, thanks and hope you give then a couple of more trys but with the medium ones.
The ultralite jumbomax are lighter and will give you significantly more clubhead speed and hopefully ball speed. I’ve put them on my clubs and I feel like I have to keep the wrist locked in order to keep the face square. Hope this helps.
I use the Zen Lite Large. Very similar benefits, but a much lighter weight so your swingweight stays normal. I wear an XL glove, if i wear one. My grips feels like Tour Velvet. If its not raining or super humid i pass on the glove. Never going back to skinny grips.
You should have tried the UltraLite™ ones (made with foam) instead of the heavy ones (made with rubber). Bryson uses the ones made with foam if I'm not mistaking. The lite ones have the advantage of much less unbalancing the club (aka when you said the club head felt lighter) (aka swing weight). I personally have the UltraLite ones (XL) on ALL my clubs, including putter, and I have been using them for 4 years now. I will never EVER go back to the ridiculous skinny grips who litterally destroy our fingers.
I switched to oversized grips a few years ago as I have very large hands and was wondering why I kept getting blisters on my hands. I am thinking about trying these and getting the Ultralite medium size.
Interesting Rick, how tall are you and your hands? I am 6ft with big hands (not fat hands to be clear) and I got 20 yards more distance and much straighter (less right fades/slices) and can even draw now. It’s easy for me to wrap my fingers around the jumbo grips.
As someone using the ultralights and switching to tours, I will say they feel standard weight wise all the way up to 3 wood. However for 3 wood and driver it feels super uncomfortable to swing, the best description is that it feels like I’m swinging underwater. However distance loss was negligible and that may be the fact they were on my backup clubs.
@@zirkelback my swing/ball speed has actually improved a bit though due to me getting a bit healthier and lifting again. Up to 182 ball speed from 175 from the first two months of using the UltraLights. As far as clubs go I hate to sound like that guy but that’s just not possible with the clubs I’m playing. (70g hzrdus green and a 75g tensei Av white both obviously X flex) If I had to take my best guess it would be that having the grip in your palms makes your grip pressure naturally weaker leading to that heavier feeling in the club. Have tour larges on the way and I might go and see if a local shop has an ultralight large in stock to try and test as equally as possible.
I go through phases where I’m missing left, and I throw one of these on and it’s great for a while, and eventually develop a big right miss. Then I switch back to my more standard grip and it’s great for while, tight draws, then the hooks eventually come in. Rinse and repeat.
PLEASE do a dozen different grip choices experiment. The very best Grip every made is the GP Velvet Plus 4 std. Will try the midsize after seeing this vid now. thanks!
Rick I use a XL glove and I play the Jumbo in small...The XL is waaayyyyyy to big for me but even my small Jumbos feel and look so much bigger then what I replaced wich was Golf Pride +4 Velvet grips in medium....Luv them cause I too draw everything...Not anymore though lol.
My glove is an XL and I also play +4 midsize. I play in wet conditions most of the time and have trouble hanging on to the club. I just ordered a medium to test. JM is sold out of the smalls.
There are 6 different sizes of each grip type they offer, as well as the Ultralite version which are much lighter than the heavier Tour grip that Rick is using here in the video. So before you go writing them off just from watching the video and thinking they only have XL ones that you can't wrap your hands around, start off with an extra small one for yourself. Just a heads up though, the extra small size they offer is quite large when never trying one before (equivalent or larger than another brands Jumbo size). So they also do offer the "standard" size as well which is the smallest. Full details for each grip and size on their website.
i've had the jumbo grips on my clubs for 2 years now and my handicap has dropped significantly. As a former tennis player, it feels much more natural in my hands and makes determining the club face direction so much easier. It is also great in damp conditions. I play golf in florida primarily and will catch myself not even wearing gloves some shots just because they're not necessary.
Some of those jumbo Max grips are over 100g if you aren’t using the ultralight versions. That’s going to throw your swing weight completely off (much much lower for JM). I would like to see this comparison with the same swing weight.
I have an xl hand and play in a humid climate most of the time, so I find thicker to jumbo grips MUCH easier for me to hold on to through impact. With standard grips I can tend to have my grip slip or the club rotate in my hands on the down swing. Thicker grips take some getting use to for sure, but a handful of sessions on the range adjusting your setup to them definitely will dial in the accuracy.
my hand size is the same as you and i use the small jumbo grips the next time i order them it will be the ex small grip . i love them i dont know how you are using the xl grips with your hand size you should be using the smalls if you do their fitting process !
The fact that you have played the "Standard grips for decades and the JumboMax are completely new to you and the results are positive would make me want to try them for a long term trial and see what that result is.
Getting fit for grips is as important as any club or shaft. It’s no different than a tennis grip, it’s your connection point. Golf pride MCC+4 midsize with 3+1 is my iron setup. On my woods I usually just go MCC+4 jumbo with 2+1
Rick - I’m sure this almost certainly won’t get seen given the age of the video and number of other probably similar comments, but you need to use the JMX UltraLites that Bryson actually uses. They actually weigh in at less than a standard grip, and I feel like I get massive club speed gains and have a better feel for the club face with them. The lightbulb moment for me was when I realized I’m swinging my hands, not the club… so if I trust in swinging my hands correctly, I can trust them to keep the club face where I expect it to be, allowing me to swing my hands faster and faster as I build that trust. This is particularly given the amount of weight I’m holding in my hands is significantly lower than it would be otherwise coupled with the stronger more relaxed hold… it feels like I can get massive load on the club head and really use the flex of the shaft to generate force down into the club head. My distances have skyrocketed in the two years I’ve been using these clubs and are still climbing despite having less time to play than ever. I’m definitely more consistent as well but that’s definitely the area I still need the most improvement in. I absolutely cant blame the grips for my lack of consistency, I just need more time than I have right now with a toddler to really fix that part of my game.
Would be interesting to see the same test with irons and wedges - not just about club head speed but would the grip changes also impact on launch angles?
It does take some getting used to.. You almost hold it differently than a standard golf grip. I find a medium between the jumbo max and standard and I get the CP2 Medium Grips with 3 layers of tape. But the correct size of grip makes all the difference.
With your hands element limited....perhaps a slight hosel setting change? Not sure what the weight of the grip is but if the club feels lighter it must be a bit heavier. Try the Jumbomax Ultralight. I have the JM Ultralight XS on my driver and its still a noticeable size difference compared to a standard grip.
Rick , have you ever tried a double layer of tape under a standard grip ? A double layer of tape is always an option choice when buying clubs ! Maybe , maybe ! that that would be the best of both set ups ? I’d love to see a comparison . I’m sure others would too . Does a double layer make a difference!
Trick with the JumboMax grips is to slacken off the grip a bit. Use the right hand as a guide only and let it fly. Took 50 shots to get it but once you do you wont go back.
i've seen these and are consider giving them a shot because I'm an older golfer with arthritis in my hands. The bigger grips are supposed to be easier on the hands, but I also play with a push/fade as my miss, so these do give me some concerns.
Just try a tennis over grip wrap, various thicknesses between the brands/types of wraps and overgrips to achieve a suitable oversize without committing to having to change out grips.
I use the jumbo grips because I have arthritis and it helps me have a more relaxed grip but I’m 6’4 with big hands , I do know they have medium size jumbo grips that maybe I loud suit you more.
I never liked the big putter grips. I felt i lost "feel" and it was not worth the change. I don't think at my age, 58, it would be worth the risk of a few MPH...
I’ve been playing JMX Ultralight for 5 years. Would never go back and I’m really surprised that adoption is so low in the amateur ranks. Just tried the Tour Weight and will probably go back to UL mostly because they tire me out.
How about a midsize grip? I'm currently testing the MCC ALIGN (Golf Pride) on my 7-iron and really love it. However, I'm still unsure if I should use it on all of my clubs...
I've played max size grips for years now (i wasn't fitted for them) and had to learn to play with them, but the level of comfort I feel when gripping a club was huge. Now I can't understand how anyone can play with standard (SMALL) grips. Its a personal thing but if anyone is expecting any piece of equipment to solve your problems then thats a mistake, any change requires you to learn how to really play with it. Just because you hit one or two bad shots (or good ones) should not be the deciding factor.
I still think a hybrid of this and a regular grip, would be the best way to go on driver. I just havent seen a true hybrid, its always to thick or normal thin. I hope someome makes a hybrid one.
Nine question in golf. Are you allowed to spray the grips with sprays available which make them more tacky? Bit like cricketers or rugby who spray hands for grip? Surely this would help keep hand position?
i switched to jumbo max XL and my draw has disapeared, but i have gained 20+ yds on my driver, my irons i can swing much more relaxed and get the same distance as standard grips, and my hands don't hurt at the end of the round anymore
I have xxxl hands and really like the feel and feel of control I get with jumbo grips. The problem is, someone is going to have to make a golf bag that actually fits 14 clubs with big grips so your not constantly fighting them in and out of the bag.
Do you use jumbomax or just standard jumbo/oversize, like golf pride etc. I use oversized golf prides and its a struggle, I can't imagine a full bag of jumbomax lol
@@spuglife I have regular jumbo size on my woods and hybrids. Medium size with 4 or 5 layers of tape on everything else and it's a fight to get them in and a small struggle to get them out. I guess maybe a tour bag would fit them all but I'm not gonna pack one of those around lol.
So if you like to have a different swing weight, put a counter weight in your shaft. If you change the grip you are also affecting your swing weight, so please get support from a proper club fitter for comparison like this. Otherwise it makes no sense.
Why did you not use the M grip of the Jumbo grip? I don't swing faster but I get my normal max distance more often. I am not cramping in my right hand now with Jumbo grip, I swing left.
Rick was playing so well with the Jumbomax M sized grip on the course. Wish he would give those grips another 5-10 rounds.

On course testing says you should be using this grip Rick. Go for the full 18.
Love the content. Would you be able to review the ping i530 irons and the maxfli tour balls?
I've played max size grips for years now (i wasn't fitted for them) and had to learn to play with them, but the level of comfort I feel when gripping a club was huge. Now I can't understand how anyone can play with standard (SMALL) grips. Its a personal thing but if anyone is expecting any piece of equipment to solve your problems then thats a mistake, any change requires you to learn how to really play with it. Just because you hit one or two bad shots (or good ones) should not be the deciding factor.
Do a break 75 with the ones you played 9 with. You shot some solid golf in tough conditions. Give it a real test.
Rick, we need a TP5 stripe golf ball review
Could we see you do a comparison video on the chrome tour x golf balls vs the PV1x?
I think the one you hit way to the left was just an over-the-top and not a turning over of the hands too much. IMHO
I would like to see the Zen lite.
With jmx fitting was either small or medium with m/l glove size... tried both but prefered small and will never go back to skinny grips
Rick you know JumboMax does have a “Large” which is slightly smaller that the XL. I play the Large and love them.
At what time should a golfer change their grips? When they first start golfing or later their career.
Just go for a golf pride mid size and be done with it. Happy medium 👍
Think a great video would be a grip fitting with Jumbomax - like Martin Borgmeir did on his video!
Yes, would be cool to see the exact opposite!
Looks like with the jumbo you just need to set up a little right and get the extra distance with a great draw.
I play oversized grips, but not quite as big as this. I find they take time to get used to. Comparing against a quick switch may not be the best.
i switched to jumbo max XL and my draw has disapeared, but i have gained 20+ yds on my driver, my irons i can swing much more relaxed and get the same distance as standard grips, and my hands don't hurt at the end of the round anymore
Rick - is it possible for you to verify if the jumbo grips fit comfortably in the Vessel bags? Maybe the 14-way individual one or the 6-way?
Should swing weight them. Definitely be playing different!!
What was the swing weight change?
Which JumboMax grip did you test in the video?
I love the The Grip Master
Very very tacky
Bryson’s clubs are very very upright too.
i wonder if the bigger grip stops you from squeezing, keeping your muscles relaxed. translating to more speed.
There is a significant weight difference between ones you are showing and the ultralights Bryson uses. Take a look and compare
Why did you not use the M grip of the Jumbo grip? I don't swing faster but I get my normal max distance more often. I am not cramping in my right hand now with Jumbo grip, I swing left.
id rather be 15 yds back on fairway regardless of grip
