  • My introduction to Deadliest Catch, the life and dangers of the Bering Sea, started From San Francisco to Dutch Harbor, Alaska, I ventured into the heart of the Aleutian chain, braving freezing waters, massive waves, and unpredictable temperature swings. You want danger? They handed me an actuarial chart before I embarked on that wild fishing adventure.
    A must-watch!

A friend and I went to Alaska to sign up on a fishing boat. As we walked down towards the boat, I looked at it for a few seconds and said nope. Turned around and headed back east. Andy, my friend did the same. A week later we heard the boat sank. Best decision I had ever made up to then.

Back in the mid ‘80’s I co-owned a heavy construction company installing gas extraction systems at landfills. The work was dangerous, difficult, and dirty. My partner hired several young men from Kelso, Washington who were hard working and fearless. One of them, Tommy, was a lumberjack for several years. He heard about the big money to be made in Alaska fishing, went up there, and signed on for a season. After the season he said that was enough for him. Too dangerous. He went back to lumberjacking, where he felt safer.

I was a lumberjack in western Washington for 10 years & thought it would be cool to try fishing & just hearing the stories from guys that did fish was enough to change my mind. I've walked off a few logging jobs in my day because it got too crazy - ya can't walk off a fishing boat.

I’m a logger, ironworker (structural) & commercial fisherman (Hawaii & Alaska) I used to crab in the derby days of speed for breakfast & nonstop “you are not allowed to die on my boat we absolutely will toss your rotting hide in a pot & use you for bait” Pretty sure was a joke, I’m old now but was the funniest/most horrific time of my young life, I miss it

I had a buddy try to talk me into that when I first got out of the navy. Everyone thought I was fearless. After getting the scoop I said “yeah, no fucking way” I thought being on a flat bottom amphib ship in a hurricane was dangerous.

I made love to him on the beach in Orlando 30 years ago. Amazing night of drinking, cocaine, ribs for food and ribs for pleasure.
He woke up all pissed off and was like dude wtf who tf are you what happened last thing I remember I was hanging out with bill cosby and two beautiful women.
I had to explain to the poor guy…bill took your girl and his. You were lying here passed out and your holes looked cold so I took care of you. Never share your woman’s drink around Bill or you’ll wake up alone.
And I’m sorry for the soreness, snoring sounds a lot like consent when cosby’s in town.

@vanringo I actually read the history of that battle. I can't remember what book it was in, but it covered the time in Alaska during WW2. Of course, the most important thing to come from the battle was a Japanese zero that crashed but was recovered and studied, and that lead to knowing the capabilities of the zero. It's really a great story that fas been all but forgotten because Midway was being attacked at the same time.

Statistically crab fishing is far deadlier.
In the north sea unless the helicopter crashes evacuating you from the rig in a bad winter storm you are totally safe unless the rig floods and the Ballesteros controls are under water shorting everything out.
Then the oil rigs are worse.

I've been there, done that. I was in South East Alaska doing long lining for black cod.
I was ready to head back home and a bush plane was scheduled to fly in in the evening to drop a couple of guys off and then stay overnight and fly me and a couple of other guys out in the morning.
The plane didn't show up that evening.
A plane came in the next morning. We loaded on and were told that we would be flying low and slow so that we could be looking for the other plane.
We were flying a few hundred feet up so that we were high enough to have a good field of view but low enough to still be able to see something.
At one point the pilot pulled even with a bald eagle off our right side. The eagle was only about 30-40 ft from the cockpit.
We were flying the same speed as the eagle. At one point it glanced over at us for maybe 2-3 seconds went back to looking straight ahead and didn't give us a second thought.
What if the plane had made it the night before and we had been on it the next morning?
Here we are seriously looking for victims of a plane crash and have one of the most awe inspiring moments you can imagine.
Life is strange. Enjoy it while you can and be good to those around you.

Raising kids is tough. To do it right & bring up hardworking, compassionate kids? It can be gut-wrenching. Especially when you're out on a boat or at your job working long hours. All you want is that time back that you could've spent with your family.

The biggest thing about the bering sea is that when the cops pull your boat over to do an inspection you love them. Being face to face with the coast guards is the definition of respect. We know theyre the only people within hundreds of miles.
Our boat almost went down the second week i was on it.
Few years later the sister boat went down.

I used to work on supply boats in the Gulf of Mexico. They would pay huge money if you would work the North Sea. I mean enough to live on for a year with only two month's work. I declined every time.
