- My introduction to Deadliest Catch, the life and dangers of the Bering Sea, started From San Francisco to Dutch Harbor, Alaska, I ventured into the heart of the Aleutian chain, braving freezing waters, massive waves, and unpredictable temperature swings. You want danger? They handed me an actuarial chart before I embarked on that wild fishing adventure.
A must-watch!

A friend and I went to Alaska to sign up on a fishing boat. As we walked down towards the boat, I looked at it for a few seconds and said nope. Turned around and headed back east. Andy, my friend did the same. A week later we heard the boat sank. Best decision I had ever made up to then.
After seeing Deadliest Catch, I will never complain about market price again. Those guys definitely earn it.
We get fucked. The owners and processors make all the profit
Doesn’t Japan/China buy up most of it..
@@user-kg3mj7kh8s dude seriously?
Back in the mid ‘80’s I co-owned a heavy construction company installing gas extraction systems at landfills. The work was dangerous, difficult, and dirty. My partner hired several young men from Kelso, Washington who were hard working and fearless. One of them, Tommy, was a lumberjack for several years. He heard about the big money to be made in Alaska fishing, went up there, and signed on for a season. After the season he said that was enough for him. Too dangerous. He went back to lumberjacking, where he felt safer.
I was a lumberjack in western Washington for 10 years & thought it would be cool to try fishing & just hearing the stories from guys that did fish was enough to change my mind. I've walked off a few logging jobs in my day because it got too crazy - ya can't walk off a fishing boat.
Swim with the little fish
I’m a logger, ironworker (structural) & commercial fisherman (Hawaii & Alaska) I used to crab in the derby days of speed for breakfast & nonstop “you are not allowed to die on my boat we absolutely will toss your rotting hide in a pot & use you for bait” Pretty sure was a joke, I’m old now but was the funniest/most horrific time of my young life, I miss it
I had a buddy try to talk me into that when I first got out of the navy. Everyone thought I was fearless. After getting the scoop I said “yeah, no fucking way” I thought being on a flat bottom amphib ship in a hurricane was dangerous.
@@user-rk1ic9pq7rI think of those lil feminist OnlyFans grrrls on WHATEVER that think grrrls can do whatever men can. Ah yeah. My nephew Curtis climbs cell towers ... moonless nights high FREEZING winds on ice n bird krap ladders n platforms just a couple of flashlights to change or service HEAVY radio units ect. HE LOVES IT.
I met Mike in Orlando Florida a couple years ago. Phenomenal guy. Truly a national treasure
He stinks
I love him!
I bet. Seems like it.
I made love to him on the beach in Orlando 30 years ago. Amazing night of drinking, cocaine, ribs for food and ribs for pleasure.
He woke up all pissed off and was like dude wtf who tf are you what happened last thing I remember I was hanging out with bill cosby and two beautiful women.
I had to explain to the poor guy…bill took your girl and his. You were lying here passed out and your holes looked cold so I took care of you. Never share your woman’s drink around Bill or you’ll wake up alone.
And I’m sorry for the soreness, snoring sounds a lot like consent when cosby’s in town.
Mike Rowe is an absolute legend. Loved listening to him during the Deadliest Catch seasons and he is one of the best people on this planet.
With the years he narrated the show he earned the captians respect, by showing how it actually is on a fishing boat .
Went fishing with my cousin, a professional fisherman, in a 24 ft Boston Whaler in 16 ft seas. Promised God if I got out of that boat safe, I would never go with him again. And I never did
factory trawlers drag nets in 30 foot seas.
30 foot seas are a calm day in the Bering Straight.@@joerussell-im5ym
I been in the Bering Sea in the middle of winter, definitely not for the faint hearted.
Sailor here. I've seen the open ocean.
When you stare into the abyss, the abyss truly does .. Stare back
I could do it. It’s the lack of sleep that I don’t think I could do. The job? Done hyper dangerous jobs before.
Mike Rowe is awesome
He's totally a great guy.
Mike: “Little Boats. Big Water. Cold.”
Me: “Ok, I’m out! I’m already terrified!”
No one can understand what fishing is until they've done it.
The hazards, hard work, pain and risks as well as close calls for those fortunate to come home.
Crabbed outta Dutch for years. I miss it
My little brother Josh was a crabber and still fishes for salmon in Alaska. He fell off his boat and was rescued by the Time Bandit. They showed it on Deadliest Catch.
Dude you are brave bud, but your camera man is a demi god
@briancampbell8406
No man.
The Cameraman always survives. Immunity to reality comes with the job.
HELL YEAH!!! if you can see the footage, well who took that footage and this my friend is through wars, cartels and all kinds of shit.
My name is on the list of those who have not missed an episode since the very first one. I truly enjoy this show. Kudos and prayers for all involved. May GOD bless you and yours
My grandfather served at Dutch Harvor during WWII.
Was he there for the battle? Not many know about the diversion the Japanese used Dutch harbor for. They wanted America to think they were invading Alaska, to hide the attack at Midway.
@axer3515 yes he was there. The 205th Coastal Artillery from the Arkansas National Guard. They were supposed to go to the Philippines, but at the last minute the powers that be decided to send the coastal Artillery from New Mexico since a lot of them spoke Spaniah which was commonly spoke in the Philippines.
@vanringo I actually read the history of that battle. I can't remember what book it was in, but it covered the time in Alaska during WW2. Of course, the most important thing to come from the battle was a Japanese zero that crashed but was recovered and studied, and that lead to knowing the capabilities of the zero. It's really a great story that fas been all but forgotten because Midway was being attacked at the same time.
Thank you Mike for just being you and staying you..
I will stay in my canoe on the creek with clear waters a bit chilly at 72 degrees but with the air temp at 90 it barely tolerable and my cooler my dog my music and my girl we will have lunch on a sandbar with our feet in the water
Canoe, cooler, dog, music, girl in that order. Interesting!
The sleep deprivation is the part I think is worst. Doing all that dangerous ass work when you haven’t slept in 30 hours is unimaginable to me. Even at their young age.
I spent 3 seasons on the Bering sea in my early twenties. It was an amazing adventure, and the pay was incredible.
What decade and do you mind sharing what your wages were? Thx.
I was stationed on the Coast Guard Sedge out of Homer Alaska for 3 years from 1991 to 1993. The boardings we conducted underway would be as challenging as fishing on the deadliest catch fishing vessels. Not to mention all the rescue and assistance operations we conducted in the bering sea. As an 18 year old on my first billet was scary and amazing at the same time.
Don't forget about the weather. In less than 30 minutes the weather can ice over one side of the boat so heavily it will capsize as tragedy has already proven.
Mike Rowe has a fantastic voice and seems like an incredibly down to earth man. It would be great to meet him and just have a beer with the dude, he’s done everything
I saw the tv show and I was very impressed. Was i tempted to go join them? Not in a million years.
Gotta love Mike he's the best good job Mike bringing awareness to the masses
Penn Air,,,, should do a series on Ak Bush pilots Mike.
Starting with the legend of Bristol Bay... from Dillingham
"" Bo Darden """
He's the most unassuming man.
Kind gentle man.
One hell of a pilot.
Probably retired by now.
The stories he could tell.
What he has done with 1st his Norseman, then his Otter. Must have 44-50,000 hours of flight time.
Amazing man!
Another Amazing man.. is Bart Tiernan.
" Bush Air Cargo "
Flies 2 DC3's.
1 on skis.
The man completely redefines the word runway!
Both men are legends. True Alaskan Bush pilots!!
Mike should be dubbed “the most interesting man in the world!”
I don’t have a little late on my comment, but I work for a company called Arctic Alaska fisheries on the Arctic one as a deck can, and it is the roughest job you could ever do I worked on the Seattle enterprise, Arctic enterprise
What makes it the roughest job is you don’t get any relaxation you get hours off not days off and I flew into Dutch Harbor state at the bunkhouse. Had beers at the elbow room and I did all of that before I was 23 years old.
I was a pilebuck (piledriver) I did Bridgework, I'm not afraid of heights, I helped on the building of the Crooked River Bridge, if I remember the highest point I ever was 300-400' it wasn't too bad...... BERING SEA, ME BOAT? NOT ON A GOOD DAY! Been in the ocean around San Diego area, Oregon coast BUT NOT INTERESTED IN THE BERING SEA, yep I'd be scared!
Those were the old days of the Derby Fishing, where it was "first come, first process" and when the quota was met, the season was over. Things changed about 2010 to boats buying quotas and the safety aspect was finally addressed and the Dungeness Crab Fishery became the deadliest.
What a guy, too bad so many missed his message.
Try oil rigs on the North Sea during a winter storm.
Land drilling rigs are no picnic in the winter either. I used to run a Vac truck and do cementing.
Statistically crab fishing is far deadlier.
In the north sea unless the helicopter crashes evacuating you from the rig in a bad winter storm you are totally safe unless the rig floods and the Ballesteros controls are under water shorting everything out.
Then the oil rigs are worse.
But only 1 went down.
@cw93711 that would be the Ocean Ranger on the Grand Banks off the coast of Newfoundland Canada. In 1982. Piper Alpha was 1988 but it wasn't a drilling platform.
More recently there was Deep Water Horizon.
Like you I started my Journalism career coming out of Columbia University with a job in Kihei Alaska at the Cook Inlet Courier. One assignment was to accompany a Pilot guiding a tanker through the Cook Inlet to Anchorage . When interviewing Clem Tillion about being a Ships Pilot I asked him how he could remain so calm . He said Oh my regular Job is fishing Snow Crab off a boat half the size of the Pilot Tender. I’ll take you out if you want. That’s really exciting in 30 foot sea pulling in those Crab baskets.
Dear Mike, crab fishing is not a dirty job. It's the deadliest job! Thank heavens you didn't take it.
Bud go look it up crab fishing 8, or 9 on the list. Garbage man was was 5 and number 1 was tree logger,
@@jeffbell9391your wrong do the math ,
@@damnu8089 what's wrong and there is no math, I saw clip on t.v and then I was surprised to see crab fisherman where like 8 and garbage 5 and one is logger that's not a surprise to be first. ,look it up ,it's not my numbers.
I was in D/H in '92 on the F/V Alaska Ranger.
The one that sank in 2008.
The deadliest job winner can change every year.
Iron workers, farmers, undersea welders, bottom trawlers/ scallopers, and construction of any type.
@@markobrien678 air traffic control is always number one
The men that actually do that have ice in their veins and balls made out of steel . I tip my hat to them and say thank you because of all that’s involved .
Some are psychopaths.
I loved that show for years.
Mr Rowe always has great stories. A true gentleman
Yeah, most folks don't understand commitment the way an Alaskan commercial fisherman does.
Landing in Dutch Harbor was one of the most interesting landings i ever had.
Being in (litterally) the water off dutch harbor was one of the most "belittling" experiences ever. Really makes you feel small and insignificant.
Being on the boat in the worst weather.... i dont complain much until it gets below -20 here.
This dude and Frye having a conversation would kill my sub 😂
I was on a 35 foot sailboat in the North Atlantic during a tropical storm 🌀. It was a hurricane but got downgraded before it overcame us 10 miles offshore. 20 to 25 foot swells. I will never forget it.
Mike Rowe and his shows are what we show our boys to understand what real hard work looks like, how some of the most needed jobs are the most dangerous and to EMPHASIZE that college isnt the only route to a future.
Even we have come away with awareness & respect for those doing these jobs.
Love everything Mike does!
If a man wants to test his metal now-a-days - try crab fishing in Alaska 😮
*mettle
Love anything Mike Rowe touches!
Oh my....his voice is golden!!!
My sister worked on one of those boats!!!! She was the cook but also worked on the deck as well when needed ❤❤❤🎉
I worked with a guy who was a 1st mate on one of those boats he did it for like 10 years or so. You would never look at him and think he had done that kinda work but he did . He was a cool dude had great stories.
I love boats and boating and have spent time ocean sport fishing off the N Calif Coast. Deadliest Catch made me realize that I'm not tough enough to merely ride in the heated pilot house of a crab boat in heavy seas. Crews of these boats face the most dangerous and difficult conditions of any job not engaged in warfare. Best wishes to all those who go to sea in this and other fisheries.
I did 4 months on a crab boat up in the Bering Sea. Long before the TV show Deadly Catch ever came out.
I am a retired fishcop. You can't believe the amount of danger for a commercial fisherman
My best high school friend who died this last December would vacation in Homer AK. He worked the crab boats into his 40s before moving away to VA. Crab fishing in AK is no joke.
Just curious. Since men are supposedly not needed anymore, who will get the crabs or lobsters ? ???
the womean of course!
Independent, capable and soo strong and resilent how they are ...... 😂😂😂😂😂

Trans women/men?😂
Was a king crabber for 12 years in the bearing sea! Quite the adventure, hard work and lots of stitches!
Think about that next you sit down to a meal of crab 🦀
I fished on a trawler on the Bering Sea back in the early nineties with my then girlfriend (now wife). It was a crazy cold ride. I surfed, but never saw waves as big and as mean and nasty as what I saw up there.
His voice is just gold👍😁
Love the show....Mike makes it great with his narration
Cameraman is his unsung hero.
And yet, people complain that king crab 🦀 legs are too expensive. I think they deserve to be paid a fair price for providing such a delicacy to my Wisconsin grocery store.
Rowe has best tv/radio voice of all time
I've been there, done that. I was in South East Alaska doing long lining for black cod.
I was ready to head back home and a bush plane was scheduled to fly in in the evening to drop a couple of guys off and then stay overnight and fly me and a couple of other guys out in the morning.
The plane didn't show up that evening.
A plane came in the next morning. We loaded on and were told that we would be flying low and slow so that we could be looking for the other plane.
We were flying a few hundred feet up so that we were high enough to have a good field of view but low enough to still be able to see something.
At one point the pilot pulled even with a bald eagle off our right side. The eagle was only about 30-40 ft from the cockpit.
We were flying the same speed as the eagle. At one point it glanced over at us for maybe 2-3 seconds went back to looking straight ahead and didn't give us a second thought.
What if the plane had made it the night before and we had been on it the next morning?
Here we are seriously looking for victims of a plane crash and have one of the most awe inspiring moments you can imagine.
Life is strange. Enjoy it while you can and be good to those around you.
deployed for 6 months to Adak in the Aleutians, 1,000 miles west of Anchorage, flying 12 hours missions farther west. Landing on a carrier was less stressful.
My brother fished halibut and king crab out of Dutch Harbor. His wife finally got him to give it up because they had young children coming along and she worried about losing him.
I faithfully watched every episode. 😎
Got a job on a crab boat once! I was Nineteen. Made 8 grand in 7 weeks. This was in 95 so good money. Never did it again. 2 guys went over and never found. The coolest job I ever hated.
My cousin was lost in the berring sea near dutch harbor the boat owner lost a negligence case but the pain never heals!
Let's not forget, according to some feminists, this don't even compare to raising children raising children are supposed to be the hardest job in the world, the toughes
Different kind of “tough”. Both jobs take great strength and great joy.
Believe this man he's been there those guys are a different breed
All that bending over at the waist is hard on a mom.
LMBO!
Raising kids is tough. To do it right & bring up hardworking, compassionate kids? It can be gut-wrenching. Especially when you're out on a boat or at your job working long hours. All you want is that time back that you could've spent with your family.
Never met your Mom did you ?
My brother is a ship's captain. People should never underestimate the power of the sea and what it takes to bring things to the American market.
That voice still sounds the same. Grew up watching him on TV. Very nostalgic. Feels so weird saying that as it seems like that was a week ago and yet its been 20 years
I've been a Bering sea crabber for the last 40 years never realized that it was a dangerous profession
😂
You sir what an amazing show. Always look forward to new episodes. God bless you. Stay safe
There ain't nuttiness that man won't attempt. His voice, his looks, his intelligence and calm demeanor make him irresistible. His wife should be on guard. 😅
Mike Rowe is a national treasure.
Slightly interested in the Ben Carson signature behind your head. Big fan of Mike though especially his emphasis on the trades.
Grew up in Dutch and got to meet Mike when I was a kid! Still live out here my Lil bro crab fished for 5 years, works construction with me now.
The biggest thing about the bering sea is that when the cops pull your boat over to do an inspection you love them. Being face to face with the coast guards is the definition of respect. We know theyre the only people within hundreds of miles.
Our boat almost went down the second week i was on it.
Few years later the sister boat went down.
O HELL NO, God bless u
I'm sorry, what did you say?
"Yes, sir. Or yeah, sure!?"
"Yeah, sure. Yes sir!"
I used to work on supply boats in the Gulf of Mexico. They would pay huge money if you would work the North Sea. I mean enough to live on for a year with only two month's work. I declined every time.
I could listen to Mike forever
Fun fact pen air no longer exists and was called when air because they were ALWAYS delayed or cancelled
A good friend of mine nearly lost his life doing this. Coast Guard heloed him out when one of those giant traps fell on him.
Everyone claps when they land.
I'm from Alaska and I did that once with some relatives and you couldn't pay me enough to do it again
Me and my buddys were fishing in King Cove, AK. I thought the same thing my first experience.
Mike was always brave or crazy to do many of these jobs. 😊
Love this guy
Love this guy.wish he was one of my foster brothers 😊
Was on those boats and small draggers as well as long line up there as a biologist. Mikes is spot on with small boat, big waves, cold water. Best job I ever had.
He has such a great voice
The man the mith the legend.
Great Show ! I binge watched it all day 👍👍 Ice Road Truckers is hypnotic 😁
Deadist Catch my favorite show 100% miss it. What happened to it.............Kenneth Boren..................
You guys and North Sea drillers sea fishermen are the hardest pups in the water .. hope you made your fortune. Wait for longer version and watch. Wee clips have there place but if it’s a good story I m all in and its frustrating when I can’t find it best regards Scotland 🏴
Rock on !!!
Nut up man. That’s just another day at work
Yeah…the guys that do that work have serious balls…and I’ll admit that I’m not one who would do that… they have my respect…bigtime…
Nothing beats fishing the bearing sea. It was just a thrill flying in and out of Dutch on that short runway
Great show
I don’t hear women complaining they can’t get crab fishing work.
WHY?
