- "Horror Insured" is a short story by the American author, Paul Ernst. It is the fifth story in Ernst's DOCTOR SATAN series (Weird Tales, January 1936).
First appearing in WT in August 1935, the enigmatic Doctor Satan was described as ‘the world's weirdest criminal-an immensely wealthy man, who has turned to crime to satisfy his longing for thrills.’
There are 8 stories in the Doctor Satan series, with the titular character up against numerous challenges, pitted against his nemesis, the criminologist, Ascott Keane.

Ian, you should read 'The Unpleasant Profession of Jonathan Hoag' by Robert A Heinlein. The protagonist realizes that he has no memory of his daytime activities or what he does for a living but one evening discovers dried blood under his fingernails. (First published in 1942, Unknown Worlds magazine.)

one of my favorite aspects of the whole Dr. Satan corpus is how prosaic Dr. Satan’s crimes are while the plot devolves into a full on occult brawl between Keane and Satan
He feels like a Silver Age super hero comic villain for John Constantine.

Fantastic. I have been waiting to get more Dr Satan. As some of you may or may not know, one of my many cats is often seen in Kean's orbit. Sunday is too discreet to let slip any information on her regular squash partner but I still try. I wish I could give y'all some extra details that were previously unknown but I have a hard time just getting how her day was. I still don't know how they became aquainted for she is a cat and he is a globe trotting man of mystery but that doesn't change the paridym we find ourselves in. Obviously, she is employed at Carnacki & Van Melsen so the opportunity to meet was rather high. That said I part time there too and I've never seen him let alone been in the same room so IDK how much that is really worth. Lol. I very much appreciate you Ian and so do the kiddos. Rainy day with Dr Satan. Fantastic

Doctor Satan has to be my absolute favorite pulp series. Aside from The Shadow and The Avenger.
Classic pulp can be so charming, and Doctor Satan embodies that the best out of all them.

I love a dose of Dr satan! I honestly thought for a moment that he wasn't going to escape!

Father opens the door without knocking "Are you winning son?". "Oh no! Dad, you know magic doesn't work if you are looking!".
And Doctor Satan lived happily ever after.
That was good story and a lovely change of pace.
Most of the old pulps had a powerful horror element that hasn't lost it's any of it's impact.
Bit concerned about how much Satan and Keen seem to be escalating things though ?

Part of the attraction of the Dr Satan stories is, that they are formulaic, and thus, predictable. It is a shame there are not more of them.
