  • "The Coming of the White Worm" is a short story by Clark Ashton Smith that takes place in the fictional prehistoric setting of Hyperborea. The tale, which was first published in the April 1941 issue of Stirring Science Stories, and sometimes includes the subtitle, "Chapter IX of the Book of Eibon", concerns the victim of a monstrous entity’s scourge, and his quest to unravel the secret of the beast.

NOTE: The source for this recording was found in the 1981 collection, "A Treasury of Modern Fantasy". I know there's a slightly longer, unedited version, but I only discovered it after uploading this version. I'll tackle it at a later date!

CAS had to edit it down after it was rejected at Weird Tales and other pulps. The complete version is now available in Volume 5 of his Collected Stories. This was very good and I hope you will be able to tackle the complete version at some point.

CAS is such an underrated writer. A jock to Loveraft's nerd and nerd to Robert E. Howard's jock.

I've listened everything from the CAS on the channel. I live his rich style. As non native English speaker it helps me getting better.
And out of curiosity, but with little hope, I've just looked up if any of his works are translated in my language. Lo and behold 2 years ago a collection of his stories was released.
Now I'll finally have it in paperback!

Is this story any relation to the “lair of the white worm” with Hugh Grant? I vaguely remember it was based on old tales and mythology.

That one was loosely (and I mean *loosely*) based on the Bram Stoker novel of the same name, Stoker, in turn, had lifted elements from the story of the Lambton Worm of County Durham. The song in the movie (adjusted to 'Dambton') dates to 1867. (I went through a Ken Russell kick in college.)

I bought the city of the singing flame without knowing anything about CAS and when i read I couldn’t believe how good he was and later i learned that he is not so well known like other horror and fantasy writers and i couldn’t understand why for he is an outstanding writer.
But its ok as long as we know and tell his stories his name will live on until the end of times
