  • This morning's low was 21 below zero. There are still many areas on the local lakes that still remain unsafe. The morning of 01/07/2022 around 6:30 AM. A Ford Ranger dropped through the ice on The Narrows which is a part of Long Lake. The truck was in about 8 feet of water. Both the driver and passenger were able to get out safely. The temp was around 7 to 5 below zero for most of the recovery. This video package will show the vehicle recovery.

At least they got out before they went down w/the truck. Poor truck, it didn't want to die this way. But if they live there, shouldn't they know if the lake is solid or not. That's why I never went ice fishing with my then father in law on his frozen lake. Great job to the guys that got the truck out.

I live next to a lake that people ice fish on. I told my Wife that if I’d rather be ice fishing instead of home with her… the Marriage was over! 19 years of NO ice fishing.

Well, some guys had great fun…finally all gear came into action. Was this a drill? Why else would you go through so much trouble. The truck is history at the end..right?
Oh, I see, it’s a little truck…question: how did it get into the water in the first place, please?

Everybody knows(or should know) not to drive on the ice until after the typical January thaw in the Great Lakes region. While it is safe to walk on at this thickness two more inches is required for vehicle weight. Also the word "narrows" often means faster moving water and therefore thinner ice than elsewhere.

Lots of fluids that aren't good for a lake. Gasoline and oil will start to seep out immediately. Windshield washer fluid has ammonia. Transfer case / differential / transmission will probably stay sealed much longer but still a danger. Battery has sulfuric acid. Or perhaps he left his sunglasses on the dash and wanted them back.

To protect the lake. The DNR will fine you (heavily) if you left it in the lake.

The state DNR ( at least in Mn) will fine the owner for pollution and it isn’t cheap.
