I'm in a small firm and nearly finished my ICAEW (ACA) studies. I feel the ACA is heavily focussed on large and very large businesses. Most of my clients are small and medium sized enterprises. The other students on my course are all Big Four students. It's a good course but I get the impression from talking to colleagues ACCA is a bit better for working with smaller companies.

Went with ACCA because of the convenience of remotely-invigilated computer-based exams from any country, not necessarily the one which you are looking to work in in the future. I am still in my country and I expect to have 5 papers till I move (already passed 3). That saves me a whole year. It's massive.
I skipped AAT and started ACCA directly, much faster since FA + MA + BT + TX + AA = AAT granted by equivalence and I expect to have these passed before I even start looking for work.

In my day there were 4 parts to the ACCA exams, 4 papers in each part. Each part had to be taken in full and all subjects passed, If you failed any you had to take all papers again, until you passed them all at one sitting. The only exception was that if you failed only 1 paper in a part and you only just failed, you could get referred in that paper and you were allowed to retake that paper but you had to pass at a higher mark, If you failed your retake you had to take all papers again.

Thanks for sharing Allan and I agree, the structure and set up now of the exams compared to what they used to be is a lot more favourable to help students! I never recommend more than 2 exams in one sitting these days! 😃 Click the link below to hear about my ACCA journey that I hope will help to inspire yours 👇

I wonder if there is any statistical data showing how many of these students who keep failing exams quit and leave their studies? The pass rates with ACCA is extremely low, so must be that most of people never get to the end...

There are some things you did not mention:
    1. ACA's high pass rates may stem from the pressure put on the students by their employers. I would suggest for people interested in ACA to watch a few videos from those who went through ACA to decide if that kind of control, commitment, and pressure are right for them. Plenty of stories of grouping exams, picking the exam order for you, many late nights, and one-fail-you're-out. Personally, I would only go for it if you want to work for the big 4 and are happy to have no life for about 3 years.
    2. Work experience. You may pass all your exams, but without relevant work experience, you will not get your letters. Is there anything to consider in that area? Like, do you need to be with a specific employer or type of company? Is your job enough to provide required evidence of experience? Are the types of examples different between CIMA and ACCA? If your role is more aligned with financial accounting but you want to do CIMA, would this be a problem down the line?
    3. Unless you are self-funded, the choice might be an illusion. Your employer may want to pay for ACCA and not CIMA, for example, and that's up to you to take it or leave it.
I am currently going through the AAT, which is kindly funded by my employer. Should I progress to another qualification, I would choose CIMA, as I find management accounting modules more up my street (at least based on my AAT results for different units). But I don't know yet if there is a preference. Another colleague finished AAT and moved on to ACCA, but whether it was her personal choice or company suggestion, I am not sure.

It's tough. Accountants are in demand, but not in such high demand that they sponsor visas. All job offers in the UK say "must have right to work, can't sponsor visas". Unless you worked for a Big 4 and grades are top 10%, your best bet is to work for a multinational company in your country and then get transferred.

I read somewhere, that it may be tempting to go for the ACA qualification due to the percentage of students passing.
The numbers may be skewed because the ACA is generally favored by the big 4 and the graduate students being put through have an awful lot of pressure to pass the exams as they may be sacked if they fail more than once on the same exam. So they have high motivation to study and pass these exams.
