He has a very strong voice...he could've backed off another 6 inches to a foot ....hehe....love his note selection on the line "I gotta do some thinkin'" great stuff. I moved to Nashville in '89 and I went to see O'Brien every chance I could ....great days in TwangTown.
NC Heart: Although I think this is Tim O'Brien's best song, you might check his solo (with girlfriend) concert that I recorded recently. ua-cam.com/video/WWx-GVhKZwg/v-deo.html
Thanks. A good friend of mine introduced me to Hot Rize in 1993. He recently passed away and I still remember him handing me that cassette tape when I was about to go abroad. He wanted me to take a little of Americana with me. Thanks for posting this.
sjk: You're welcome. I wished the video quality were better, but they sounded so good I could not just sit on it and not share with the world, so I spent hours playing with filters until I got what you see here. I wish my effort always turned out so well. You can see more of Tim in concert, recorded live by my own hand from just in front of the stage, at ua-cam.com/video/WWx-GVhKZwg/v-deo.html
Ahh, the memories! A dear departed friend of mine introduced me to this song around 1995/96 as he played this on his guitar at a rather infamous local's joint in the hills of South Carolina. Dear Greg passed away early 2000's at barely 60 years of age. He also played 'Bringing Mary Home' on his guitar. That locals joint--called Bob's Place--was featured on the front page of Time magazine to show G. W. Bush's support base for the 2000 election. RIP Greg!
I heard this music daily, when I was growing up (not always this band, or this song). Seeing this video for the first time, I now realize Hot Rize were the Darlin' family in real life. 😃
I recently found this group and I am fascinated. A different and sweet bluegrass group, just love your voices and excellent musical harmony.I really enjoy walk the way the wind blows.
A true Bluegrass Classic! I love seeing the original band play together. Charles Sawtelle was with us when this was recorded. I saw them last in Farmers Branch Texas a few years back and they still sound awesome!
This song is great on so many levels. I have it on two different cd's and on vhs tape. It has been one of my favorite songs for a long, long time. Adding Jerry Douglas to the mix just makes it that much better. When he watches this, he must think, "I can't believe I was ever that young or that skinny!" -- one of the videos around. Thanks for posting.
+Dennis Galloway Oh, yeah! It's my favorite instrument, especially when played in the style of Pete Kirby (aka Cousin Oswald), which both Rob Ickes and Brent Burke have shown me personally that they can do very well. Please watch this video to hear my favorite sound from the banjo: ua-cam.com/video/jRVfr7tP_x4/v-deo.html I asked Aaron McDaris if there was a musician's term for this style, and he said, "No, that's just pickin'."
Sonny Osborn passed yesterday and it's ironic that this wonderful song came up on my UA-cam again today. Tim is singing the same high lead stacking that was the foundation of the Osborn brothers sound.
That's the way it's done, son! When Nick came in on the tenor part, I didn't have any room left for more goosebumps!
I loved seeing Hot Rize in concert. They were just the perfect band, such a joy to watch and hear.
Beautiful, you guys are great. Saw you live years ago in Salt Lake and have followed you for years, I'm 82 love you all.
One of my favorite Hot Rise songs 😅
Love when Tim sings this song! gotta be one of my favourite singers.

First loved listening to Hot Rize when I lived in Boulder in the late 70s early 80s. Still love listening to them......Thank you!
Lin Heinrich: I was privileged to record a concert by Tim. I hope you enjoy it at ua-cam.com/video/WWx-GVhKZwg/v-deo.html
It don't get no better than thisTim is the man.And it's amazing how much Nick sounds like Tim in his harmony
This was always a great Hot Rize signature trick - having Tim switch parts on the chorus. You hardly realize that it happened.
Saw them when they first came to Nashville…I knew they were goin places…great voices
I don't think Nick gets enough credit. I love his harmony and his wit!
And... Nick's production on Kate MacKenzie's "best Bluegrass album" nomination! Definitely deserving!!
He has a very strong voice...he could've backed off another 6 inches to a foot ....hehe....love his note selection on the line "I gotta do some thinkin'" great stuff. I moved to Nashville in '89 and I went to see O'Brien every chance I could ....great days in TwangTown.
Brother harmony without being related. 👍
Tim switches to harmony on the chorus.

Great song, skillfully written and produced in classic bluegrass form!

He wrote this. You have to have suffered some emotional pain and heartbreak to know these feelings .
Spot on Greg.
The resonator guitar fits really good with this song!
