Frank Broyles and his southern style was always so perfect for color in the booth. Keith Jackson as the play by play man, we all know how classically good he was.

Classic match-up between two of the greatest programs and two of the greatest coaches in the history of college football. In 1977, Nebraska was the only team that defeated Alabama in a close game that was played at Lincoln, NE. Old-school football: the Wishbone vs. the I-formation, run, run, run and throw some passes to keep the defenses honest! Great stuff. ROLL TIDE ROLL!!!

And to think we lost to ND for a NC and Nebraska in the 70’s and still won 3 (‘73/‘78/‘79) We got so close to winning a NC in the 80’s and had so much talent. If we would’ve won one in the 80’s then Bama would have a NC every decade ‘cept the 50’s. Roll Tide! Jealous fans act like Bama’s only been good since Saban but they don’t know any better or just don’t care to admit Alabama is the most dominant college football program of all time. I didn’t start watching football until I was 15 which was in ‘05 (I was in bands that toured and I just didn’t care about football) then I fell in love with my dad’s Alabama Crimson Tide. Went 10-2 with hard loses to LSU (bs call in OT) and auburn. (they sacked us at will) Watched a 6-7 Bama team then a 7-6 team in Saban’s first year and then….it was all uphill from there.
I’ve gone back multiple times to watch our Nc’s from the 70’s and of course ‘92. My favorite is ‘09 though because we had just endured so much since 2000. 2018 is up there tho cause I live on Ga. The beating of the Irish in 2012 was great too considering what they took from us in the 70’s.

@@louieo.blevinsmusic4197 Alabama never came close to winning a Natty in 80s.They never lost fewer than 2 games in a season. And some of their 80s squads weren't good.

@@nathaniellathy6559 also the were plenty of NC teams that lost a game back then to go on to win a NC. We didn’t lose that second game in ‘89 ‘till bowl season. I know it helps your case to not bring context but leaving it out isn’t a good look. We were damn fine in the 80’s. About as respectable as Oklahoma has been in the past 10 decade.

Alabama's only loss in 1978 was to the USC Trojans also played at Legion Field in Birmingham, the team The Crimson Tide split the National Championship with in 1978 after defeating Top Ranked Penn State in the Sugar Bowl.

People forget, Osborne didn't go to option QBs and the option til Turner Gill in 1981. Started the transition a year or two before. He was head coach since 1973. David humm went to NFL. Vince Ferragamo transferred to Nebraska to play for Tom Osborne. Took the L.A. Rams to Super Bowl in 1979, and was Rams QB through mid 80s. As OC under Bob Devaney from the early 1960s through 1972, Nebraska was a balanced offense, throwing it plenty. In 1972 with Johnny Rodgers they averaged 220 passing , 220 rushing. He made the switch to the option because he had one win against Oklahoma in 1978, lost the rest 73-80. Although Oklahoma ran the wishbone, their defense needed to practice against something similar enough, a run heavy option offense. It's amazing he wad 60-3 the last 5 yearz still running I information option football in 1997, they usually didn't pass for much more than 100 yards per game. Didn't have a great receiver after Irving Fryar in 1983. Can't argue with his results 1993-1997, but too bad he switched to beat OU, I would have liked to see him continue what he did with Humm and Ferragam. He was ahead of his time (exception being Don Coryell at San Diego State throwing it more than anybody) in the early '70s passing as much as they did and running a balanced attack.

It’s hilarious how fans just walked out on the field at the end of the game and walked next to Coach Bryant. Also, the handshake between Coach Bryant and Tom Osborne was quick with very little pleasantries.

FYI, Alabama Glass played football for the Colorado Buffaloes.

i love bear, and the old stuff if his teams is almost like a drug or me. but in many ways on the field, general saban has eclipsed bear. he'll never be the towering cultural icon/face of the state that bear was (and in many ways still is [all the houndstooth hats at 'bama games today, etc.]). however saban, on the field, has edged past the man in that fresh red sportcoat about 15:00 in (bear is a better dresser than saban, by the way)

I don't know. Bryant, truth be told, was gyped out of one nattie over politics at end of '66 season.
What would've been fun would've being able to see Saban in Bryant's era. Saban much prefers that brand of football and I bet he'd have been a handful for even the best coaches of that era, including Ara, Royal, McKay, Vaught, Neyland. Saban's disciplinarian approach with guys back then likely as effective back then as now (though kids were raised more like that anyway back then, saying yes sir, no m'am and doing what they're told).

Clemson is notorious for their scheduling cupcakes. They play in a weak league with almost no competition then put The Citadel, Wofford, Furman, Presbyterian and others that have zero chance against their multimillion dollar empire. Charley Pell and Danny Ford was famous for it.

This is pure B.S. Berns started the 1977 season as the starting I back. He got hurt and Hipp came in and rushed for 1350 yards so he started in 1978. Hipp and Berns basically had an identical number of carries but Berns played more snaps because he played both FB and HB. This was NEVER any kind of racial thing like you are implying.

Well you know how some people think I don't think Tom Osborne was the type of player to put 1 guy above the other.
But you can't convince some people of that even if you point out correctly both backs were extremely talented.

@@Sheisthedevilyouknowwho-ft9we Switching to the Option and going to the 4-3 defense was the best moves Coach Osborne made. His 90's teams devastated the finesse passing teams. The 95 team was the best team I ever saw, dominated a Florida O line with four long time pro football starters on it. They destroyed Saban's MSU teams.
