    It is amazing the number of Japanese naval officers that did not understand that the Washington Naval Treaty limitations were beneficial to Japan. Japan did not have the financial and industrial capacity to have built much more than they did while America could have built far more ships that they did. This is a fact so obvious that the fact that it did not emerge in conversations among officers is stunning. Just look at how quickly, the United States closed the naval gap after Pearl Harbor.

    By preventing the Shokaku and Zuikaku from participating at Midway? Huge American victory!

    For those who don't know how we discerned the target: We sent a false message that the desalination plant on Midway had gone down. Then we intercepted a Japanese message stating that the target was having problems with it's desalination plant. Bait taken.

      The purpose was to determine the Japanese code for Midawy as up to that it was unknown. Midway sent an un encrypted message regarding the desalination plant.
      Japanese messages mentioning Midway in their code was what the code breakers wanted. The ploy worked.

      As is known, the Americans had broken the Imperial Japanese Navy codes. The Japanese never got wind of this, which seems impossible. The Pacific Ocean is a huge expanse of water. The only way to grasp the size of it is to hold up a globe with the mid-point of the ocean before you. There, the Earth looks like a water planet as the Pacific Ocean covers half the globe. In April 1942 the IJN divided the First Air Fleet and sent fleet carriers Shokaku and Zuikaku and the light carrier Shoho into the Coral Sea. They found the American Navy laying in wait for them in ambuscade. Warning bells should have rung. Then the same thing happens at Midway. Japan should have gone back to square 1 and devised a new code. They could never accept the notion that the Yankees had broken their code.

    It is important to remember that all these "memoirs" were written ex post facto. It is easy to be critical when you know the outcome. Some minor points.
    1- The Attu/Kiska attack has to be one of the single stupidest acts in the Pacific War. The ships that went to the Aleutians could have been at Midway.
    2- Japanese intelligence regarding the US fleet was pathetic.
    3- The Japanese emphasis on the great decisive battle sent them down a road that never comes to an end.
    4- Japanese over confidence and hubris did the Japanese a death blow at Midway. The narrater also mentions the Japanese use of "wishful thinking" in making planning decisions.
    5- The AI voice has some whack moments. It is interesting that this memoir uses an American voice.

    It has been explained that the "free" versions of these AI programs mispronounce words on purpose, in order to get the user to pay for the use of the correct versions. Sounds reasonable to me.

      To me, on the other hand, it sounds like conspiracist nonsense.
      The prosaic truth is that reader programs are imperfect - that’s it, no conspiracy necessary. In any case, there is nothing unintelligible in any of these - even if the mispronunciations can get mildly annoying.

      @@karabenomar While the bot does have its issues I have run into people that are much worse. The Bot does speak clearly even if it does make mistakes. The English language makes it difficult for the Bot to speak correctly. Our language has too many exceptions to rules and words that are spelled the same but pronounced differently due to context and that is just scratching the surface of the English Language issues.

    That whole Zuikaku thing is non-sensical. They had the Shokaku's remaining pilots to fill out their losses and could have been another carrier at Midway.

    • @jarvisfamily3837
      @jarvisfamily3837 5 місяців тому +4

      IJN doctrine placed heavy emphasis on deploying ships and squadrons that had trained together. While they could have created a combined air group made up of the remaining aircraft and pilots from Shokaku and Zuikaku, deployed them aboard Zuikaku, and increased their available air power by about 25%, this was contrary to doctrine - and due to over-optimistic mis-reporting of results at Coral Sea by returning Japanese pilots, IJN leadership believed that they already had 4 carriers against at most 2 which could be fielded by the USN, and thus felt confident they could easily beat whatever the US Navy could throw at them. On top of that the complex Japanese battle plan had them sending two smaller aircraft carriers, Junyo and Ryujo, to the Aleutians to support the attack there, when the aircraft off those decks could have been added to those from the four carriers detailed to make the main attack at Midway.
