Despite his success in film, Vigoda became a household name with his role as Detective Sgt. Phil Fish on the television sitcom "Barney Miller," which aired from 1975 to 1977. However, many people might not know the real reasons behind Vigoda's departure from the beloved series after its third season. While speculation abounds, including rumors of creative differences or contractual issues, the true motivations behind his exit remain shrouded in mystery. Regardless of the circumstances, Vigoda's departure did not diminish his impact on the show or his lasting contributions to television comedy.
Beyond his roles on screen, Vigoda was known for his warmth, humor, and approachable demeanor off-screen. He remained dedicated to his craft, appearing in numerous film, television, and theater productions throughout his career. Despite facing challenges and setbacks, Vigoda's passion for acting never wavered, and he continued to entertain audiences with his memorable performances until his passing on January 26, 2016, at the age of 94. Abe Vigoda's life and career serve as a testament to the power of perseverance, talent, and a relentless pursuit of one's dreams, leaving behind a legacy that will be remembered and celebrated for generations to come.

Dude had money, was healthy, appeared in The Godfather, had a long full life and died of old age in his sleep. We should all be so lucky. Sad ending?

I just Googled him and the age he was when he first did Barney Miller. He was 54, one year younger than I am now and they called him " the old man" on the show. 😮

He played a little older, he retired at 63 after 3 seasons which made him 60 in the first season and I remember when Wojo had to describe him on the phone he said he's 63 but he looks a lot older.

You forgot about Arthur Dietrich, played by Steve Landesberg. You also forgot to mention Frank Luger, played by James Gregory. Both are major characters in the Barney Miller series. Thank you for showcasing Mr. Vigoda, who was awesome!

The one thing I remember about Abe Vigoda was he would have a sour puss look on his face and he make you laugh. That is what I liked about Abe. Thank for your service during WW2 and the joy you brought to everyone. You are greatly missed Abe.

Loved Abe Vigoda aka Barney Miller's Sergeant Phill Fish! Sad when he left the Show! Although a Series Spinoff Starring Role with Him Was Still Pretty Cool To Watch! He also played such an Awesome Gangster/Mobster Type! Too Bad that they Couldn't have done a Boris Karloff Biography Movie back in the 1970s with him playing that Character and to whom he Really resembled a whole lot in some ways! Still Miss You Abe! Thank-You For Sharing and God Bless!

He was a brilliant actor and what I remember most is his performance in the Godfather and on Barney Miller then on his own show Fish.
Then later on he made an appearance on an episode of Barney Mille. The only thing I remember is him walking into the squad room then making a be line to the bathroom!
Great actor on a classic show
