By the way, I did a little bit of reading about Ms. Ripperton's song 'Loving You' and it is about her daughter Maya Rudolph the Saturday Night Live tv show star. Tracy has been my favorite singer since I was 14. Im 44 now. It makes me so happy to see young people listening and reacting to her music. Btw, Khalid does a cover of this and it's awesome.
It was beautiful to watch you react to this, knowing what was coming. I saw her play this at a rock against racism gig in London, the year it came out.
The 80s are filled with golden nuggets hidden amongst all the royalty of the music of that time. It was a kaleidoscope of culture and sound that affected everybody. As a person who grew up going to bed hungry at times this song hits me in the gut. I also grew up with religion being shoved down my throat so REM's song" Losing my religion" also had meaning for me despite the fact that song may or may not be about that subject. This song fully described my life as a young man 40 years ago. I moved to California from Ohio. Prison or a early grave was on the table had I remained in Ohio. My life ended up changing for the best, and I experienced those houses and condos in the suburbs!! The fast sports car too! I shed a tear every-time I hear this inspirational song. Its amazing (and rare) to find a person as young as you who understands and appreciate this powerful song. Your analysis of it and noting that it has hints of country, soul, folk music, light rock, etc were all accurate. Hope your musical tastes have continued to grow in the 2 years since you made this.
We look nothing alike, & yet I feel like we were two twins nodding our heads, going back to the FIRST time heard this song. Strong. Visceral. internal. Soulful. That's Tracy.
I always loved the way the chorus brings a moment of happiness and optimism, but all too fleeting as the reality of life closes in again, crushing the spirit. It’s a wonderful musical metaphor for the subject she’s singing about.
@@arnoldjones5517 She was invited to be part of the celebration of Nelson Mandela's 70th birthday, and she performed this song as part of that event. Up to that point, the song had done modestly well; after that, the exposure caused its popularity to reach new heights.
This entire album (her debut) is a masterpiece. There are other amazing tracks on some of her other albums (she hasn't released one in over a decade) like "Born to Fight" and "All That You Have is Your Soul" that will move you in many ways.
Every time since it came out "Give Me Just One Reason" has come on when I was trying to decide to stay in a situation or leave and I took it as a sign. Always the right choice.
I love Tracy Chapman, this entire album is superb, I use to have it and listened to it all the time, listen to the whole album if you have the time, you'll absolutely love it if you haven't already heard it. This song has so much meaning, the entire album talks about her life and how it was growing up where her and her family lived. Sincerely Lorenzo gig harbor Washington.
Your comment about it sounded as if she was rapping and singing at the same time was very interesting. I had never thought of it that way, and I think she might have preceded rap, but she is definitely a great storyteller. Anyway, thanks for an interpretation of her vibe that I had not thought of before!
Tracy Chapman is such a great singer and songwriter and this is one of the best ever. You can totally feel this one. It's what music is all about - you should really feel something. This is the early 90's. Musicians borrow from everywhere - country, blues, folk and blend it into something new and unique and Tracy Chapman did just that in this song. A timeless classic as relevant today as it was when it was released. Great choice of a song to review Lizzie, know you have excellent taste in music here as you do always.
AFAIR TracyChapman made that song around 1987/1988. She definetely performed that song at the Nelson Mandela 70th birthday tribute concert in 1988. Sure the sound of the early 90s was still very influenced by late 80s music.
The story is she was playing on the side stage of a big concert at the wembley stadium (forget who's concert it was) anyways, the main artist was having problems of some sort. They needed someone to stall the crowd a little bit so they had this girl who hadn't even put out an album come from the side stage with a few dozen people to sing on the mainstage with thousands of people listening in the audience. She sang this song and absolutely blew the crowd away. It's on UA-cam though if you wanna watch it.

Always loved the story telling with this song and how she gets so much out of the phrase fast car. I love how she uses it to outline part of her initial attraction to the guy, how its used to underline her overall need to escape the kind of life she's lived and her parents have lived, then how it becomes a symbol of how she's gotten herself trapped in a dead end with the guy, and then ultimately represents her decision to leave him and still try to elevate herself to a better life. Really strong lyrics there.
