  • Splitting the atom was arguably mankind's greatest... and deadliest... invention. In this conversation snippet I ask nuclear policy expert Carl Robichaud what lessons we can draw from the nuclear bomb, and how we can apply them to new technologies like AI and synthetic biology as they loom on humanity's horizon.

Nice, Liv! This is a glorious movie and there's lots of analogies to AI risk. We will definitely make mistakes however the only way is forward to mitigate risk.

Part of your appeal is wondering what your life is like. I hope you keep a journal and someday we'll know :) Just wondering where you draw that, "behind the scenes", "reality TV" line. I love your content! 🙏

Since Oppenheimer is a wide release movie to the public who normally eschews "Heady" type movies, I am hoping that the folks will make the connection to the current war with Russia and AGI. We have dodged the nuclear bullet for over 75 years lets hope that our luck doesn't run out and if doesn't we don't end up with a worse existianal risk "AGI".

He is inaccurate. AI's genesis was also with the military, and its inherent values are militaristic.

We need science, and scientists, per se, all we get is profiteers. Something changed.

Senators aren't confused and stupid when people explain new technologies.
Senators only pretend to be confused and stupid when they have an agenda to support or subdue specific new technologies for their lobbyists and sponsors.

You think senators generally have a pretty good grasp on AI?

@@alpha0xide9 I don' think they're any smarter or dumber than average people on the internet. They know as much and as little as we do, they can read the same articles and watch the same documentaries.
You have to admit they play dumb a lot.

Frankly, I could give a sh!t about the Oppenheimer "story." I've been to Nagasaki. The story regarding the intended use of practically every bit of advanced technology has two parts: 1) to maximize corporate profits over everything else and 2) produce more powerful weapons. AI will be no different.
BTW, there was ZERO military necessity to drop TWO atomic bombs dropped on Japan according to General Eisenhower and other top ranking U.S. Admirals and Generals. The necessity was to justify the expense of their development, profit the MIC, and prove their application on the battlefield.
I hope all those atomic scientists are eternally twisting over in their graves over what happened.

No offense but listening only to the technical people is what got us into this mess to begin with. there are also highly skilled people who are not techs who should have a voice in this. So you now can say "I don't care about artists" and spin all sorts of stories about them being elitists or try to claim that AI learns the same way , but AI is a machine , its not even true AGI , so think carefully about what you are trying to achieve with this tech because you are next on the chopping block as they say..
Also "Only 9 nuclear weapons states" , seriously now Liv , I don't want offend this highly skilled individual , but does he take this audience for fools?
