Starting, at age 75, my 31st year of fly fishing. I'm so grateful for your video, one of the most well produced educational videos I've ever viewed; most articulate and so well paced.....and my background is in Education ! I've practiced this knot every day for several days, with sloppy results, but steadily improving! Today my knot was perfect, and I was so excited, as I always was intimidated and felt the knot was a bit beyond my skill level. You have pleased an old fly fisher, who loves the sport and the people of the stream!
John, I'm 74. Recently lost a large striped bass on a factory installed loop knot. My guide gave me his rod and it had nail knots instead of relying on factory loops. I'm convinced. I'll practice this knot and then cut off all factory installed loops and retie with nail knots
I am always very impressed how folks think up these great ideas while others of us struggle just to tie the knot!!! Im the latter part.Thank you for this perfect solution. I tried tis method and it works great. I would maybe add to moisten the knot like we do with other knots to reduce friction. Thank you!
So I have been fly fishing the western US for 40 years and I have never bothered to learn to tie this knot. The reason is that you just don't use this knot that often. What I have done in the past is simply have the fly shop tie a section of butt about 18" then blood knot the leader to the butt and just work off the thickest 18" of the leader, blood knotting a new leader to the old section when necessary. That system has worked well for me for decades. Anyway, seldom used or not, I have always had a sneaking desire to learn how to tie this knot when I had the time. Tonight I watched your tutorial twice, got a piece of butt and an old piece of fly line and bullseye on the first try. Continued to practice, have tied the knot 10 times now, all flawless. Thanks for the help you, made the process very easy.
Thank god for you dude. I've been getting extremely frustrated with my new 3 weight setup, the lines are so small that it makes knots extremely difficult, being that at 30 I already have a slew of medical bullshit that destroys my fine motor skills. I shake like a SOB. This makes it super easy!
Thank you so much, I've watched 4 or 5 different videos that didn't do good closeups of the line and didn't really explain too well in my opinion. Finally found this video that made it so easy. Thanks again
I have watched almost every single video there is on how to tie a nail knot, and still messed it up! Dozens of times!!! But low and behold, you made it easy and I now have a leader properly tied to the end of my fly line!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you!!!!!
Thank-iyou for making it easier! I've been tying leaders to Lines for 48 years and you just made it much easier and cleaner. Loved how you include the skinny end of the leader which makes tightening easier and smoother, and also how you roll the knot while tightening. I ust subscribed. You explain things very clearly.
Excellent video, thank you! FYI The knot can be improved further by putting a blob of UV glue or similar fast-setting putty over it to form a smooth bead that then never sticks on your guide loops.
A local fly shop sold me a defective fly line the loop came undone in less than 2 months. They wouldn't exchange it nor would the company. Had to learn this. Thank you.
@@David-gld is it really? They sodder those loops. I have friends that have had the same fly lines for years. Even the employees told me they never heard of that happening.
@@David-gld yes there was. What are you communist? When I pay $89 for a fly line and it's defective I can 100% complain. Why else would I look this up? Nail knots are becoming lesser known due to the loops line manufacturers are adding. So yes it makes sense to bring that up due to the fact I had to search this and learn to tie it for my MODERN fly line. What is your problem.
I find that I end up only needing the nail knot a couple times a season and for whatever reason I can't tie it by memory. This video has gotten me on the water every time!
Have never tied a nail knot. Appreciate how concise your video is and the high quality of images. While there will be a learning curve there is not need for further or different instructions. Thank you.
Wonderful video!! Just learning fly fishing and this was incredibly helpful. Thank you. Ill have to add, this fly fishing knots and tippet line is a MAJOR challenge with arthritis :(
I was in a bind today. I was on the side of a pond and the loop in the fly line broke. I searched this knot and was catching blue gill in about 10 minutes
I tried to tie one so many times with other methods. My tapered leader kept getting shorter. After a while I made more reasearch on UA-cam, fishing for a better solution, and finally found this video. I would like to ask you : would you agree to add "noeud raccord soie/bas de ligne" to the key words that lead to your video? I mean, this method has got to be better known.
I just grab the tag end (where you have the loop) in my teeth and tug on the standing end with my right hand to tighten down the wraps, while holding the cylindrical part of the knot in my left hand. It avoids going back and forth from one end to the other with the right hand. And you are just going to cut that tag end off anyway, so any nick in it from teeth doesn't matter.
Add on comment. Just tied a nail knot with your method. Wonderful But its probably best for knotless leaders. I make many of my own leaders and perhaps you should mention to not include the skinny end on hand made leadersm because the knots can get jammed up while pulling the leader thru the nail knot.
This is great...but what happens when that tapered leader is 12 ft? thats a Big arse loop. i find it hard to pull 12 ft leader through without it getting twisted. should i cut it in half and then tie a blood knot to re attach?
I've done it but if you wanted to cutoff the tipped section of your leader you could do that. You could also cut the base of the leader 3 to 4' down and reattach with a blood knot.
I came back to this video to post my experiences. I put it this knot system to the test on splicing two lines only I tried mono leader to braided. Woah Nelly if that isn't easier, faster and stronger than the blood knot. The blood knot was just a way too laborious and unreliable. I've lost fish, lures and my patience with it despite being perfectly tied, tite and symmetrical (beautiful). Way too much effort for an unreliable knot. This is easier and more reliable. I've "knot" had a failure yet. "I invented the nail knot" ~Al Gore
That was too easy! I watched this once, and tied a 3x leader on perfectly. I didn't even need my glasses; you can do this by feel. This is a much better way to tie your leader in your line than loop-to-loop, and you will catch more fish!
Doesn't this method of the nail knot depend on having access to both ends of one of the lines (in this case, the leader)? And if so, doesn't that make this a slightl variation of the nail knot, perhaps easier but also more limited, since a traditional nail knot only demands access to one end of each of the lines being tied? I have in mind instances where a nail knot tied in a traditional way would work, but this would not, for example tying backing to a fly line, or any other uses where the lines in question are either too long, or are spooled, and thus don't provide both-end access to either of the lines. Serious knot dorkiness here. A life or death question.
This is a simpler not than the one I taught my self. I wish I'd seen it years ago, I was self taught and never had anyone to ask. I call mine a hillbilly bow tie, its a double slip knot that takes 5 seconds and a lot of practice.
Fly Fishing & Dreams Thank you so much. I did my 8ft 6" fly rod for smaller trouts. But since we already have Steelheads, Salmon coming up I use my 9ft 8wt with butt section. Thanks again for the info
Just use a darning needle, you want SIX turns minimum......eight is as far as you need to go. Balance the diameter of the leader material to the fly line. You want the butt section to be at least 75% of the fly line diameter on a standard set up.
Yes, it's technically a snell. And I think the bodkin is there to help structure the knot around, I think it would probably work but the turns would get all stacked and bent without it.
If you have not tied the nail knot before this video is unhelpful. Thankfully I have tied this knot before. Please explain clearly why it is important to take the tag end, fold it back over the nail (bodkin) and then tie the wraps with the right side, the running end - and then pull the tag end through the knot. Oi vey! Knot tying is not meant to be this confusing.
Exactly. Nothing wrong with the snell knot, only calling the snell by the wrong name in this video. I prefer the needle nail knot for the line-leader connection as it is a smoother transition than this knot.
Super easy... Ive watched this over 10 tomes and attempted it for 30 mins now
Took me like 5 minutes tops.

Mike Brenneman, if you’ve been fishing 48 years and just now figured this out, you’re a fucking idiot??
Hallelujah, actual field directions. Thank you.
Man, as a new fisherman, this knot is a prick! Thanks for the video!
I’ve been trying for 1 hr maybe longer and this video actually let me figure it out
I’m gonna have to watch this a few times.
I look for your videos whenever I need to know how to tie an unfamiliar knot. Thank you!
Well done! No BS , side notes, or other garbage.
Got the knot on the second try.
Thanks!!
THANK YOU! fly fishing is almost as frustrating as fun... as a beginner.
This is an absolutely fantastic tutorial, TA.
Got it, thanks! Adjusted playback speed to watch it in slo-mo and it helped!

tip - an allen-wrench works great over a nail/toothpick/tube- the bend is a great place to grab the two lines.
