Your piece was superbly well conceived, I am amazed. From the distance of a century, I have always been intrigued by Sarah Bernhardt, ever since someone offered me a poster of Sarah, one of the posters mentioned in your documentary, I was a 11 year old boy. Coming across your work was a godsend. Now I understand better the lady in the poster. Congratulations. And thank you.
My family always caclled me that from when I was little+I had no idea why nor who she was until I came across Sarah Bernhard+was like “WTF?!” Why would my family tease a child over being like 1 of Madonna's gap-tooth lesbian buddies(not that there’s anything wrong with w/that!) I thought to myself “How do they(my Grandparents)even know who these ppl are?!” My point: Look at all the differences, and sameness, brought together by 1 singular letter. Who knew the significance?! I do…NOW! #LetItBernhardt #LadiesAheadIfTheirTime #HaventIalwaysBeen
I Came back to tie the Sashes of the Many costumes of my Myriad Lives! Sarah Bernhardt was Indeed one of my Favorites of continually Walks across the many Stages of my Mortal Immortal Plays Great Stories that you all are creating! I Love you All! Adieu! Sarah
Have loved Sarah from before I knew who she was. Alphonse Mucha’s works for her have been a part of my life (and walls) for decades. Good job, once again. 🌻
Sarah Bernhardt was an artist in the truest sense of the word: A person determined to show the World the true spectrum of humanity. Her circumstances of birth be damned, she never for got what could be.
WOW another AMAZING WOMAN….She was a TRUE ARTIST in every way…..Have People Today have ANYTHING To Fight for and especially WOMEN….Have We Achieved ALL… These WONDERFUL Women who did so MANY Things and Proved they could ACHIEVE what they wanted at All costs…I feel People Today Have lost this kind of Drive or maybe We just Settle for what We have…. Wonderful video, brilliantly narrated, and great story. Amazing how you put these together. Shame UA-cam doesn't value this kind of content. I imagine it is tempting to post another video on the Mr Beast situation. Your channel is a rare gem.
Thank you! It seems my whole life I've heard of Sarah Bernhardt but never saw any performances or read any books about her. From your splendid narration, I see she kicked down a lot of doors for women in the entertainment industry. There's a Bette Davis saying "she did it her way". Well, before there was Davis, there was Bernhardt. Again, many thanks. You did a superb job.
She was a friend of Lillie Langtry. The whole series Lillie Langtry are free on YT. In one episode Sarah was visiting London. The part of Lillie is played by Francesca Annis. Lovely series. I even bought them on DVD. But they're free on YT. The part of Sarah I should look up but the actress did great and looks like Sarah.
I absolutely love watchng this video thankyou so so much for all this hard work. I was mesmerised at this amazing woman and the full life she led thankyou.Until coming across your channel I never knew who Sarah Bernhardt was and found the way you told this brilliant story was mesmerising
I hope you enjoy this week's Videos. Let me know your thoughts on Sarah and who you would like to see. I am working on many of your topics for Autumn and am really excited to share them. Remember comments and likes are vital to keep the channel going, so thank you. Sorry to my high school French teacher for butchering the language.
Yes, your former teacher would want you to double-check your pronunciations of (the avenue des) Champs-Elysees, courtesan and macabre. Otherwise, this was a most entertaining bit of history to watch on a Friday afternoon, and I shall watch it twice!! Thanks for your efforts to enrich our lives. It is appreciated.
@@annfisher3316 I already have her on the list. I hope to do her in the Autumn. The only thing I fear with those videos is lack of photos, so it will be heavily artistic. Ada Lovelace was practice for the other videos; and it will be a fun challenge, and her story is amazing. Will definitely do it before Christmas.
@@MythicMindScape21 now my friend you know I liked it! It's a very well done video and you have a really nice voice in your pleasant to listen to. So yes my friend I enjoy your videos very much. Have a great weekend!
Very interesting Lady. Amazing that her mother was a Courtesan and she was able to climb so high, guess it was lucky she was sent off to the convent unlike her sisters. I wonder if her mother knew who the father was.
When I was a little girl in the early 1970's my grandparents would giggle and call me Sarah Bernhardt when my dramatics were over the top. I never knew who they were talking about until I was nearly an adult in the mid-1980's. Touchè and very hilarious Bubbe and Papa - I wish I was in on the joke back then because it was extremely funny. 😂
My grandmother told me that Sarah had come to our city to perform. I would check it out and yes she did at the Burlew Theater which was located on the main street in town. The Burlew has been long gone even though the building is still there. The owner of thar theater had a street named for him but doubt if anyone knows it.
Very interesting & so detailed…..She certainly ‘got around’ & knew so many different types of people. So seemed to have ‘no fear’ & by all accounts was a very good actress. ‘A Princess of the Unconventional’ …..😮
Yes she was a difficult character to research as shockingly there are so few good biographies on her, and her autobiography like Chanel's and truthfully many people's especially of that era, and maybe throughout all of history, is just a romanticized version of events and in Sarah's case we can be sure they didn't happen. The fire story is a good example, Sarah had no burns on her body. But French people are especially hard as mentioned in the video during the uprising all documents were lost, so we have very few actual records.
Imagine the discussion at cocktail parties. " Yes, that darling Mr Stoker based my Dracula on my husband " Though with Sarah's gothic tastes I am sure she loved it.
She claimed that her son Maurice's father was a Belgian aristocrat named Charles-Joseph Eugène Henri, Prince de Ligne. However, this claim was never officially confirmed, and there was speculation that Maurice's true father could have been one of her other lovers. It was hard to know what the truth was with Sarah, she made so much up, and no one could really confirm or deny her stories, as records were lost. She certainly raised her son to believe he was his father, but again who knows.
There's a sound problem with the voice over - like squeaking metal! It is not very loud but could not watch, what I did watch was wonderful. One of my heroines.
@@golden1789 When I saw your message I listened on my phone and heard it right away, it's like nails on a chalkboard, and once I heard it, I can't unhear it. I will leave it up for now but remove it the end of winter when I do a more comprehensive one on her.
This is the third of your videos I’ve watched. They’re really good. But please lose that really sappy embarrassing music. It’s so distracting. And it’s really unnecessary.
Interesting. But your narrator needs to read better. She massacres every French word and many English words. Look up 'profligacy' for example. She pronounces the name of SB's husband Damala at least 3 different ways. C'mon. She makes the production sound shoddy.
Brilliant film! You are a marvelous writer, narrator and biographer. Thanks so much!

The best stage actress of all time. The wealthy aristocrats admire her talent in that époque.
So many of the people I cover on this channel speak of how much she inspired them.
Ok, her liaison😅 with Hugo, that's interesting. Knew nothing about her till now.

It is called "musique de salon" and suits very well the fin-de-siecle mood of the time and the opulence of the style in fashion.
