My experience with moss (UPDATE in comments)

  • I have removed the link to the Dusk Tropic moss mix due to varying results and I don't wanna suggest something that won't work as intended. The only thing that grew from it was sphagnum moss and from the pictures I have seen others posted that's the only thing growing as well. I wouldn't suggest the Duck Tropic moss mix. I say this from my experience, and the pictures others have been posting, yours may vary.
    EpiWeb: www.glassboxtro...
    Hygrolon: www.glassboxtro...
    I got the live moss from Charles Moni aka Manuran here www.dendroboard...
    No I am not getting paid nor have I received any free products or promise of any products for this review. I do however support Glass Box Tropicals they are an awesome company with quality supplies and products.
    Charles Moni has the best low growing moss around.

    I love that line: "I've had my fair share of bad luck but its mostly due to negligence"

    Wow great looking moss! How did you make hygrolon moss wall?

    Beautiful tanks I love all the moss you have grown and your plants look great. It's a shame beamswork doesn't make the 6500k panels anymore. I was looking all over for them as they would perfectly fit my exoterra viv. I am settling for something half the size and will instead add an additional spotlight. Hopefully beamswork will start to make them again.

      sebastian ayala I doubt they ever will make them again. I actually bought up some of the last ones on eBay so I've got a few spares.
      all the Moss in the small tank was taken off because it wasn't the right kind of moss that was growing. and with the larger tank I had somewhat of a snail issues so I let it dry out a little bit to get rid of them and the moss died

      dragonspirit1185 you know I've had a similar problem with snails. Many of my mosses have dwindled but my Java Moss is still kicking. Tough stuff!

    Hi thanks for this vid. For the 20G long, how much time had passed from when you applied the mix until you recorded?

    • @dragonspirit1185
      @dragonspirit1185  6 років тому

      SoTastyGaming the 20 long didn't have a moss mix applied. I got live Moss from a Community member and just laid it on there and pinned it to the background. the Moss mix that I mentioned in the video turns out to be nothing but sphagnum Moss that was growing and I ripped it all off

    Hello Great Video!! What did you use to convert the 20 long, as far as the rails for the sliding doors?

    What would you recommend instead of the Dusk Moss Mix? Something else?

    • @dragonspirit1185
      @dragonspirit1185  6 років тому

      Real moss. After a while of pulling out all the sphagnum there is a little bit of liverwurt looking moss but that's about it. I'm going to try blending up some moss with truly dead sphagnum and see what happens. I'll also do a test without using sphagnum as a filler

    • @smorc65
      @smorc65 6 років тому

      Makes sense! If I were to use live moss, would you recommend hygrolon, or something else? (I don't like using the expanding foam backgrounds; I prefer cork bark or other alternatives). How would you secure sheets of live moss to the background?

    • @dragonspirit1185
      @dragonspirit1185  6 років тому

      @@smorc65 you would smear the moss or let the moss grow in the material

    Great! Im making a background with polyurethane and i want to put hygrolon over it. Can i use silicon to paste the hygrolon on the polyurethane background?

    • @dragonspirit1185
      @dragonspirit1185  6 років тому

      Armandinho Mariano why would you make a background with polyurethane are you talking about styrofoam AKA polystyrene? I know polystyrene isn't safe for frogs and inhabitants and I don't think polyurethane is either.
      You need to use Gorilla Glue for Hygrolon.

    • @armandinho93
      @armandinho93 6 років тому

      dragonspirit1185 I will use expanding foam. There are some videos here that shows people doing this way.

    • @armandinho93
      @armandinho93 6 років тому

      dragonspirit1185 Yeah! Im from Brazil and i found the gorilla glue here. But not very cheap haha. Thats why i was thinking to paste the hygrolon on the expansive foam with silicon. I made a test on a little piece and it pasted very firmly. What do you think?

    • @dragonspirit1185
      @dragonspirit1185  6 років тому

      Armandinho Mariano I've been told silicone doesn't hold onto it well enough. Also you would have to carve all the foam and get rid of the surface. You don't have to do that with gorilla glue it creates a better Bond and still sucks to the smooth foam. You want to mist the background then use some gloves to spread around the gorilla glue then most it again and wait 15 minutes or so for it to start turning colors and expanding and touch it with toothpick until you see that it's firm and tacky then you apply the Hygrolon. Might have to work in sections. If you put it on when you put the glue on it will expand through the fabric that's why you gotta do that process

      I had to pull lots of it off

    hi i have moss in my tank but it always stays yellow, any tips to keep it greener?

    • @dragonspirit1185
      @dragonspirit1185  6 років тому +1

      You have to have good lighting and it needs to be real moss not the dried stuff. Good lighting being lighting in the "Daylight" spectrum. 6500k is best

    hi how did you stick the hygrolon to the glass

    • @dragonspirit1185
      @dragonspirit1185  7 років тому +1

      Daryl 2016 I used Gorilla Glue you put it on there and wait for it to get tacky which takes anywhere from 15 to 20 minutes and then you put the Hygrolon on. You test the tackiness with a toothpick. If you find that it's not sticky anymore then you can just scrape it right off and try again. There's no actual time frame you just have to keep an eye on it
