Something I've always loved about Jackie is her knack for putting very complex concepts into relatable, understandable terms. She explains things so well
One of the reasons Time Team got so right…. Finding experts who could make things make sense…. But not by talking down to us.

@@picassomoooni recall seeing a time team in the US. Phil was gnashing his teeth in frustration as the US bods balked at the idea of machining off the top layer and sieved everything. They said it was because they had so little every scrap was precious. I dont think Phil agreed with them. It was very tedious.

That was “Time Team UK” who traveled to the US for one episode.
Picassomooon meant that there was an actual Time Team America. Only nine episodes were made.
That's because we can't shine a light on archaeology in the Americas without reckoning with heavy colonization. People don't even think we "have" anything as old as in Europe, whether that's because they think it doesn't exist or because they can't relate with it.
This was a joy - it's fantastic to listen to experts in their field, so thanks to all concerned, but especially Jackie for her insights
I love listening to Jackie talk. And I love her style aesthetic.
Is that what its called. I assumed she dresses like I do. Whatever is clean and ironed will do.
Thanks so much to Tim, Jackie and of course Sir Tony for this fascinating programme. It's almost a shock, even through the filter of the screen, to see how moving it is to see the plait of hair in the woman's tomb there; albeit the hair colour having changed with time. Sort of brings one up short.

In a case similar to the Amesbury Archer, the bronze age Egtved Girl in Denmark was found through isotope analysis to have travelled to and from northern Germany. But in 2019, Danish researchers realised that the samples of soil which established the isotope level for Denmark gave a distorted value, as they were taken from farming areas where lime fertiliser has been used. When samples were taken from non-farming areas, it was found that the Egtved Girl had been born, lived and died in Denmark. I wonder if the Amesbury Archer's story will also change in light of new research?
I think the Archer is different; origin for him is based on the metals (gold) and tools he was buried with, not only soil or isotope analysis. I may be misremembering though.

The initial testing on the girl was done a long time ago. And there were not much bones available to test.
Whilst the jokes surely write themselves, this was always a fascinating video about history and humanity.
This is lovely. It's SO nice to hear Tim mentioning Phil who has, of course, been conspicuous by his absence, and Jackie even breaking into a Wiltshire accent at one point. More of the same, please. Maybe convince Raksha, a Time Team alumna who has certainly gone on to other great things in archaeology, to drop by, reminisce, and let us know what she's been up to as president of the Council for British Archaeology.
My family is from the Alsace-Lorraine area and it's wonderful to see a long , long , long lost relative become famous.😊

This was a wonderful episode, so interesting and informative. It Is amazing just how far science has progressed over the last few years. It will be interesting to see if at some point in the future we will know more about the ancestors of The Amesbury Archer.

Anything involving Tony is something I'll sit thru happily. I'll always consider him the "everyman" of Time Team, asking the goofy questions that us "common" folk might ask. As the years passed, he certainly did earn his credentials as a "Digger", absorbing the wisdom and knowledge of people like Mick, Phil, Jackie and the whole team. Jackie is the kind of scientist that doesn't just look at the bones, she tries to put them into a living context and bring them to "life" so to speak. Amazes me that she can look at a fragment of bone and know where it comes from, and often how old the person was. She's truly a mistress of the bones.
I rediscovered Time Team last year when I had to spend a lot of time flat on my back recouperating from an operation. It was the best way to fill in those hours. I love the episodes where Jackie and Helen are teamed up to cover bones and small finds etc. It is a delight to watch the pair of them get excited over a pottery shard or a bone in the ground. Jackie's ability to recognise even a small bone fragment is like a superpower. And I still watch TT, even if I've seen the episode before.

also, with regard to Sir Tonys rant, I was one of those folks that was in favor of wholesale digging for a long time. but thinking about the geophys results from the original episode at athelney vs what the towed arrays and lidar techniques of today are doing in the rebooted youtube episodes, I applaud the restraint and humane empathy you professionals show. My hat is genuinely off to it. If i won the lotto and bought a listed site, it would be my extreme urge to dig up absolutely everything. I have such a deep yearning to know things. a compulsive need really. So again, my hats off to that.

I was never that interested in archeology except for a few arrowheads found in feilds until I stumbled on Time Team several years ago. My loss.
Behavioural insight into things such as how mobile people were, and how they were able to be so, is an interesting field of study on its own. What were the social norms and taboos of the past are also fascinating. Thank you Jackie and friends.
