Colin Farrell is a good actor but this show was grossly overrated and the writing was downright silly. In fact, having this version of the Penguin having a bizzare crush on his own Mother was downright creepy and made the character look like a weirdo with serious Freudian issues to work out. Everyone is raving about this sub par mess and some people have the nerve to make Soprano’s comparison. Just stop it people. Overrated. 5/10.

One of the best reviews I have seen for this show. I’m definitely checking your channel out more often. I love Danny Devito and Collin Ferral too but in different ways. The Gotham series also did his character quite well but he could be a little cartoonish sometimes too. You have the potential to go far. I’m glad to be a subscriber. I hope you make more videos soon!

I got my gf hooked on the penguin, what's funny is she hate comic films and shows, but it was so good and subtle she didn't know it was Batman related till the end
Right. Because it isn't. They just use Gotham as an excuse to remake The Sopranos crossed with a few other gangster franchises. The Sopranos is only ten times as good. Given the way TV is now, that's not bad. ;)
The people that dismiss Burton's penguin just lack imagination. Which is weird, because they buy into a billionaire with no super powers being the most important 'superhero' in the DC universe, alongside Superman, a literal god
I don’t dismiss burtons Batman I actually really loved it. I just think there was a lot of room for improvement. But that’s just my opinion. If you love that version I totally get it

@@BobxKetchup that's fair, but I think it's worth reflecting on the fact that Burton's Batman was created during an era where mainstream, subversive creativity was more celebrated (and funded by studios). The difference between Nolan and Burton's Batman, for example, is that the latter doesn't take itself seriously and therefore the ridiculous titular character isn't in danger of breaking suspension of disbelief. My problem with contemporary Batmen is that they are so desperate to be grounded and taken seriously. It's a rich dude in a bat suit. Thanks for the video, it was a good conversation starter.
I don’t think there’s a lack of imagination, but creating a sewer creature who is a disgusting pervert and wanted to murder children, I could see that being Killer Croc but Penguin, you can subvert Penguin without going that far off the rails to make him a captivating villains for movies. Mob boss Penguin is still faithful and find new angles from the original gentleman of crime

What I found ironically funny was that everyone who had valid suspicion and the right guess on his motives completely 💯 on point, just for Oz to manipulate them and turn the truths into lies to deflect, all the while getting exactly what everyone feared to come to fruition about him down to his very mother😂
I agree, he even did this to watchers of the show. Even though we knew he was bad he manipulated us into liking him only to show his true colors by the end
Sorry, not down for soprano penguin. Because this version of him is now popular, except him to remain the soprano villain in all his version now. Ruining his fantastical version, and never being able to be portrayed like that again.
That’s a valid take, but I think people see a mob boss character like the penguin and automatically relate him to Tony soprano. When in all honestly besides for their profession, they’re not really similar.
Only thing i would add to the show was umbrella and the HAT that's for me makes him iconic penguin. :D but i can live without it Still great show i hope batman will face him allong with joker. Batman vs Joker and penguin in one movie is my dream :D
Disagree. Danny’s was great. Had the umbrella, and top hat. Colin didn’t even put the top hat on and didn’t even use an umbrella. It feels like they stripped the comic booky style out of him and tried to turn the Penguin into someone normal who just happens to waddle.
@@BobxKetchupthe problem with The Batman is that it took Batman out of it. Riddler was a boring guy in a gas mask, Batman an edgy teenager who thinks listening to Nirvana makes him alternative, Penguin was just a mobster and we got the dullest Catwoman ever.
Burgess Meredith was the s***! You can't knock him! The one from Gotham was a homosexual, Colin Farrell, he's like an Italian wise guy from New York. I'm going to leave Danny DeVito out of it, Tim Burton screwed that up!
Did you seriously only drop 15 seconds to the 60s Penguin and not bother to give Burgess Meredith his due? And you didn't even mention anything about what made his performance iconic? Come on now...
They wrote a character this well and good, I'm sure they'll find a way to make it reasonable, especially since the next Batman movie isn't even about Penguin. Meaning they're probably building him up, or batman up, before he gets taken down, which personally is more believable than Penguin gets beaten in just one movie after his series
I think he was outdated personally glad to see him updated to a much more modern take and losing a lot of campy tendencies. At the base of the character I think he just wants power and money, and the hbos penguin portrayed that the best.
This was a more modern take on the penguin which the character hasn’t really had in a while. I feel like Tim burtons take is a bit outdated, and hasn’t aged super well.
@ It works for the fantastical gothic Batman world that Burton build that’s the beauty with comic characters there’s room for different interpretations that’s what comic fans forget
They didn’t “fix” anything. Tim Burton was hired to make t(e movies he knows how to make. Being faithful to the interpretation of the source material is secondary to the filmmaker’s vision. However, yes the penguins were way too grotesque in Devito’s performance. He was not a foil to Keaton’s Batman. However, Burton was going for some kind of feral theme along with Catwoman. It strayed way off of the source material l
I agree with you’re point somewhat, although I do believe that Tim Burtons take was heavily flawed and the most recent show fixed a lot of the penguins flaws from recent iterations. But I can say the flaws fixed are kind of just opinion. Like me personally I think getting rid of his goofy tendencies and making him a more serious character was over all good
I keep seeing all these UA-cam videos praising Penguin and saying he as a joke character...when exactly was he a joke character? We can't be talking about the comics
I think that during the Burton movie he was more of a joke. Although I do think that it has to do with the time it came out, and is a product of its era
I think you’re referring to Batman returns. From what I’ve seen online that’s the vibe I got, but I wasn’t around when it dropped so I wasn’t really sure
By making him Tony Soprano with a messed up face and no Carmela? And way less interesting scripts? Burgess Meredith was, is, and always be, the Penguin Supreme. I mean, why is he even CALLED that? He was called The Penguin because he dressed up like one. He doesn't even wear a tie now. If I ever get around to watching this, I'm not even going to consider him The Penguin. He's not. It may be a great show, and I love Cristin Milioti, but He. Is. NOT. Which makes sense. Since Robert Pattinson will never be The Batman. I have yet to succeed in watching five minutes of that emo-fest before tuning out.
Dc fixed penguin back in 1999 with no man's land. Then in 2011 we got the penguin mini series (pain and prejudice) which was basically penguin's killing joke. Pain and prejudice is still the definitive penguin and it is in my opinion slightly better than the new version we got in the newest series. (And the only reason that i prefer it is that although they are very similar, comic version oz doesn't have mommy issues). So anyway, it's not that dc finally fixed the penguin now. I don't want to be rude, but i will be. People who don't read comics should stfu. Especially if they are content creators.
I’m not a major comic book reader so I can’t really speak to the penguin in the comics as well, but this video was more meant to be directed at the penguin in live action. I only mentioned the comics to give a brief history of the character. I also wanted to talk about the penguin in cartoons but I haven’t seen enough to give my opinion on it.
@BobxKetchup you could give pain and prejudice a try if you want. There are countless of sites that you can read comics online for free. (Although it's kinda... not legal).
This is how you make a complex villain while still making him a villain
That’s a great way to put it honestly, some villains you kind of agree with their motives, but here we don’t agree but still empathize with him.
Both Farrell and the actress who played Sophia deserve Emmys for the TV series.
They were both great in their roles, I think Sophia’s actress isn’t getting enough love because she absolutely killed it
Cristin Miloti
rooted for him till the very end right until that particular scene. Hope Batman gets his ass fr
