  • attempted route 87 to worlds end, but the rain had other plans for us. Camera starts to level out around the 4 min mark and lens wipe around minute 6.
There was an 83% chance of rain at the start and a 60% chance the next day. "Maybe it won't rain." "We will be under the cover of trees." I kept thinking to myself. It poured the entire 9 miles the Smith's knob vista. Even when the rain slowed (it never stopped), the drippings from our covering of trees continued to taunt us. "Embrace the suck" I would say every couple of miles to Ellen who, to my surprise, was still having a great time on her first backpacking adventure.
I, on the other hand, have attempted this trail many times. I have done the last 15 miles, the first 45 miles, and countless other sections, but have yet to be able to string the whole thing together. First it was my ability, second was time, and now I can say weather got the best of me. Although we had prepared for rain--rain gear, dry bags, appropriate layers, the rain persistently beat us down. We managed to keep the tent dry with what I can only assume is record setting time for setup. The rain continued through the night, and the temperature dropped. I laid awake on my flat, punctured camp pad until sunrise and the rain slowed. More rain pending and potential for hypothermia, I knew we would have to bail with the last remaining layers we had on to get us back to car warm and safe. But sleep first.
Someday I will get the hyper lapse of the entirety of this trail.
