He was very underrated, He always seemed to be so close to winning a title yet he would either lose to a better fighter or just lose a decision that made no sense. Fighters like him don't exist nowadays, simply full of fighting spirit. One of my personal favorites.

This is a great post. I met Yaqui at his gym in Stockton, CA in 2019. What a classy guy. He said Galindez was the strongest he faced, Saad Muhammad the toughest, and that James Scott “was on something” when they fought. Yaqui one of my all time favorites. Thanks for sharing this video.

Thanks for this Rich. Yacqui Lopez was great - he was basically the Latin Saad Muhammad (without the title). Always fought wars, great chin, great warrior. These fights were amazing to watch as a kid in the late 70s and early 80s, and Lopez was a great piece of that light heavyweight scene with Conteh, Saad Muhammad, Rossman, Galindez, Marvin Johnson, Lotte Mwale, Eddie Mustafa Muhammad, The Camden Buzzsaw, et al. A Golden Age for sure.

I think the late 40's through the mid 50's is considered a golden age of boxing but the early 80's was amazing too. Like here. Yaqui Lopez is just one of many of the toughest boxers you will ever see and there seemed to be about 5 guys in each weight division that were like that. Thanks for uploading this great contender. I remember watching all these fights on tv back in the 70's. The era Yaqui fought in had so much talent the list is endless, even the so called club fighters would be top rated today. 4/22/1977 Lopez lost TKO 1st rd due to cut on forehead by Lonnie Bennett, Bennett was about to be ko himself when ref stopped fight. Marvin Johnson had tko Tom Bethea the fight before on the undercard, fight was in Indianapolis & part of series of fights in a tournament that folded-up soon after this fight card. I think it was called North American Boxing Championship was not part of that ABC/Don King/ Ring Magazine/ crap.

Saad Muhammad kept his word on fighting Lopez in a rematch with Saad Muhammad's WBC light heavyweight title on the line in a memorable fight that they won the 1980 Ring Magazine Fight of the Year beating out the first Sugar Ray Leonard vs. Roberto Duran fight at the "Brawl at Montreal". Without a doubt yaqui Lopez was a true boxing warrior. He never knew when he was beaten. He was strong , could throw solid combinations, was ready to fight every minute of every round , and had a solid chin. Sometimes yaqui was to brave for his own good . He gave everything he had in every fight and his opponent always knew they had been in a fight. Yaqui always fought the very best of his time and ducked nobody. His 2 fights with saad Muhammad were wars . He also had 2 fights with galindez who was also a great champion. I actually thought yaqui was unlucky to lose both of them. He also fought John Conteh who was another superb boxer who used his skills to keep yaqui at bay. He beat Mike rossman who was another very good fighter who took the title away from galindez when rossman boxed superbly that night. It was painful for me to watch yaqui when he fought Carlos deleon , yaqui had seen better days by then, but still gave it everything he had. When you think yaqui was in a division that was littered with great fighters , spinks , saad Muhammad, conteh , galindez I honestly belive yaqui Lopez was one of the best fighters never to win a world title. I have a DVD collection of yaqui Lopez that I put together from a number of boxing collectors and when I watch it from time to time , I take my hat off to mr Lopez. A real true fighting man and a true gentleman outside the ring. God bless you yaqui.
